What Should TO's do with Edition Select?

A huge blow to the mode is that it’s not like SF2 where it’s selectable in every match, it’s an offline only side mode.

And may I just say, what a huge waste of effort.

Drop it unless its a side tourney.

5 Sets of frame data for each character?

Not even once.

It will be hype as hell for exhibitons, side tournaments and casuals. But in high level competitive play? fuck that shit

I honestly fail to see why it couldn’t be tournament standard. Every version of these characters has been available in arcades so the argument about international competition not playing the same game is false. They’ve already played it. They might not have experience using V.Dhalsim against AE.Yun, but if you’re using Dhalsim against Yun, how far do you think you’re gonna get anyway?

Besides that, it’s not as if any of the characters in any version of the game were truly broken anyway. We’ve never had to ban a character. Besides, not all of the characters even have all five versions. At least in CvS2, every character had 6 versions and that game was played in tournaments just fine. And yes, I’m aware that these are not the same game.

I see no reason this shouldn’t be standard. Character balance doesn’t mean shit compared to playstyle balance, and this supports the widest number of playstyles. None of these characters are broken. If you care about competition, you would want the widest number of options.

the offline only thing is the last nail on the coffin for this mode.
Oh well, it was hype while it lasted.

I want to see this be the tourney standard. It could take the game to some very interesting places. I think it’s a mistake to have it as an offline only mode.

No edition select in online mode and arcade version pretty much seals the deal in terms of edition select being banned in tourneys. There is no way that Evo will screw over the Japanese arcade players and online warriors, and every other tourney just copies Evo’s ruleset.

So if you didn’t play a vanilla top tier or the AE twins, you can pretty much quit the game cause your character is servbot status. Ver. 2012 Akuma is the best or 2nd best in this game and his vanilla version was apparently a million times stronger. Don’t like current Seth? Enjoy Vanilla Seth!!! Yeah this would suck if it became the current tournament standard. Why not have vanilla boss Seth be playable too, and maybe all the secret boss characters? That would be hype! Broken as hell though.

If it becomes the tournament standard it will kill the game. Side tournies fine, a fun distraction that won’t ruin the game for the majority of people.

Why didn’t Hyper fighting Anniversary Edition replace ST? You could pick any version of any character in SF2. Cause it is imbalanced as hell and the CE characters dominate.

I want to try it out in tournaments

Except HSF2 was played at EVO and SBO. It was unbalanced as fuck, but people gave it a chance before going back to ST.

And I’ll post it again because why not. Vanilla Akuma didn’t have to deal with AE twins, AE twins didn’t have to deal with Vanilla Sagat, Gief and Honda. We simply don’t know what could happen in such a meta and therefore can’t make a valid assessment on whether to allow it or not before we get our hands on the game.

True…but all those characters you’ve listed are among the most powerful in any edition. It isn’t necessarily that one character would dominate, just that a small handful would. There are a lot of characters that wouldn’t even be able to compete. Right now you see just about every character in tournaments, and that is one of the things SF4 gets right. Some characters are seen more often and are better, but you see more variety of character selection than most other fighting games.

ST is a super old game, so experimenting why not? Then they went back. Ultra is a brand new version of this game, and should be the focus. Would be much better IMO for edition version to be played as side tournies for awhile, and if miraculously it seems balanced enough that the majority of the cast is viable and no character is flat out broken then maybe it can take the main stage starting next year. If it turns out to be terribly balanced and is the main game anyways it would pigeon hole players to use only a few characters if they want to compete.

We don’t know if Ultra will be balanced either.

All Editions Edition could end up creating something ala 3s or MvC2, yeah, most of the cast aren’t viable in top level, but you could end up with a high enough variety of playstyles among viable characters that makes it not matter as much. You won’t be able to use your favorite tall as hell native american grappler in tournaments anymore unless you want to get destroyed, but you’ll be able to use a grappler and do well with him, I find that much more valuable than some cheesy character stories and victory quotes.

Ultra may not be, but Capcom has put a lot of thought into trying to balance it. With edition mode, the characters will all be thrown together randomly, and the chances for balance is therefore much less.

Ultra should serve all playstyle needs too. Hugo is supposed to be the best of the new characters and he is a grappler. Shotos will be good and well represented. Ultra Guile will make charge turtles relevent again. Rush down characters will be a okay. I think every main play style should be well represented by at least one character, and likely you will have more choices for the subtle differences with similarly playing characters.

the biases are so strong on this topic

When anyone in the bottom third of any version of SFIV makes top 8 at a major tourney, I’ll agree with you. Until then, shit characters will stay shit characters because they’re shit characters and they don’t stand a chance anyway. I mean, seriously, yo. Who the fuck is picking T.Hawk and expecting to win? Why would anyone use ANY version of El Fuerte and expect to land in the money? You think U.Vega is all of a sudden a tournament-win capable character? You think that by limiting the versions they have to fight, that a bad character will have an easier matchup against a good one? Non-viable characters aren’t viable because they’re shitty designs. Except Dan. Best character.

el fuerte was top 8 at SCR this weekend. he’s bottom 3 for sure

Good to know. I didn’t watch SCR.
Was it iPeru? I’ve been wanting him to win something for a while.

yep. lost to Wao and then eliminated by snake eyez

iperu is the type of player this could hurt the most if ES became standard. elf is bottom in every game. has never been strong. but he grinds, and is a really smart player. maybe vanilla elf can hang, but top 8 is in question if the game isnt as balanced as it is

So I guess that people who haven’t played a top tier character in any version of this game should just switch characters, so those that have can have their broken fun, gotcha.
