What makes the fighting game community so different?

So recent events got me thinking how important it is to be a good loser. I’m sure we’ve all heard of the events of last friday by now. And it really got me wondering, what makes the fighting game community so…different from other competitive gaming circles. Little-ish trash talk and when it does happens its light banter at best.

Is it just more tightly knit, more accepting, more honorable? I guess what i’m trying to say is, how does the FGC manage to remain devoid of controversy, relative respect compared to mobas and shooters, and respectable enough to that the events of last friday are…effectively a non issue?

Wrong section but also there was plenty of real ass fighting in arcades back in the day.

Ah i see so the FGC has simply matured sooner then the others. Hmmm…feel free to have this moved to the proper forum if it is such a nuisance here.

I don’t think the fighting community is so different in this regard. Sore losers have resorted to violence in the FGC in the past. Its just so happened that we havn’t had one with a gun and the will to use it.

Unfortunately, we have a generation that has a higher (albeit significantly low) number of these anti-social narcissistic sociopaths. I have my theories for why that is (rise of single-mother homes), but this is something that we need to contend with.

FGC is just generally older that’s all

I fail to see how that one factor could make such a huge difference.

Well, I never said that there was a “huge difference”.

Because no one wants to be Dark Prince.

There are actually a fuckload of factors.

But hey, because you dont know they magically dont exist.

I do think age is a factor (30th anniversary of Street Fighter and most of us were there for the start) . But “olds” also have their competitive roots born in a physical space elbow-to-elbow and that required some modicum of social skills (no hiding behind perceived anonymity online) you had to go back to that group if you wanted to play tomorrow. Social peer pressure to not be a jerk since arcades had a crowd of patrons, employees, passersby. Basically not just the maturity that comes from age and experience but the environment that shaped us to be good sports and not poor winners and sore losers. Those guys wouldn’t last long.

Which reminds me, remember that time someone got stabbed in China over using a raw DM in KOF '97.

Yeah, the community has matured, but there’s still unfortunate stuff that happens.

Yeah, that’s some shit.

FGC is just about as toxic\immature\controversial\accepting\honorable\etc as other gaming communities. Fighting games just don’t have the same mainstream appeal as other genres so it doesn’t appear as massive of an issue. If anything the toxicity has gone up in recent years due to various reasons.

To be fair, it was China and KoF 97.

That’s as hardcore a group as you’ll ever see.

Not even in Mexico*.

*This is probably due to their arms being crossed resulting in reduced reaction times and increased recovery time.

The only people who say these are the ones who have invariably never experienced other gaming communities.

I never even PLAYED, CoD, and I know this.

Well I have experienced other communities. And that’s my experience with the FGC. Most people in just about any gaming community can be pretty toxic in general. I see literally no difference.

The fights i got into over sf2t and xmvsf were bullshit

The mexican threatening to stab me over kof97 always kept with Mr

Seriously, try playing Dota, modern WoW, whatever shooter is popular with kids these days, etc and come back and say the FGC is anywhere near as bad.

Yeh seriously, I don’t think there is any community worse than the FPS community.
In my experience FPS > Driving > Fighting I don’t play MMORPGs

seems the more casual a game the more dickheads it attracts.

Stream monsters are a whole other bag of shit.
