What makes an anime game "anime"

Blazblue is early 2000s pandering that went into the 10s that’s completely shameless about it. SF was 1980s pandering that succeeded through the 90s that was completely shameless about it.
Its just that since people weren’t exposed to them as cliches, and it was the first mainstream fighter, you don’t get the FUCKIN WEEABOO SHIT claim since nobody even knew or cared about Japanese animation beyond what we were exposed on television in the first place.
Unless you bought bootleg subs or were one of the few who went out their way to pirate before DSL.
If it was the other way around, Street Fighter would probably be called some nostalgic idiot for crappy shonen anime’s wet dream.
(and because someone will take that as an insult, I like both, CP for 2013 please.)

Yes. Using the name “anime” is silly. Really “long combo L M H air-dasher” is probably a better name. But it’s the name that has stuck. It also makes some Capcom players feel better when they claim their games aren’t “anime” and therefore better. Even if everything comes from Japan. <3

But GG is P,K,S, HS, D with no long combos, just saying

Actually, it’s rare that combos in your average GG/BB/MB/AH match can even get to 15 seconds. But in UMVC3 15 seconds is the bare minimum for many staple teams, and let’s not go into Vergil sword loops and Frank west lvl 5 setups…

Which makes UMVC3 the most anime game of all!

I’m actually pretty sure that most AH3 combos are shorter than a full Sakura Shunpyu loop into Ultra in SFIV. Much shorter.

That being said, why are we all so hell bent on classifying games as “anime” or not? Are people really that insecure?

Yes.

SO SO TRUE <3

I just meant something that doesn’t have multiple punch and multiple kick buttons. 8D

Maybe “long combos” wasn’t the best choice of words. Uhh…chain-ey combos? IDK I DIDN’T MAKE UP THE TERM. ::sob::

What about Hokuto no Ken or The Rumble Fish then?

OHGODIDON’TKNOWPLEASESTAHP.

The chain combos would still stand though. I think. I only played Rumble Fish 1. For like, 2 hours.

But Battle Fantasia, Aquapazza and Vanguard Princess don’t have a chain system in place for example

I dunno, CS had some pretty egregious stuff.

KEY WORD I used was LOOK. The art style of Blazblue/Guilty Gear LOOKS like the common cookie cutter anime style. Even in Japan, most Japanese consider anime and manga a child’s thing, even when it’s not (same way American’s do). SF does not have that common look, even though you can still tell it’s Japanese, clearly. It looks like very Japanese, it just doesn’t look like a Saturday morning CW anime.

gratuitous violence and nudity doesn’t make it more adult

Believe it or not, anime is CONSIDERED a kid’s thing, in Japan. Even an incredibly adult anime, IDK if they would see it as a kid’s thing, but it’s not a normal adult thing. I say this based entirely on a friend of mine who has been stationed in Japan for 5 years and has a Japanese wife.
She ridicules us and says anime is for kids. Grown men watching anime are Otaku and that isn’t a socially good thing in that country. It is a misconception but that’s what I was lead to believe; all anime and manga are Shonen.

They just need a Family Guy, over there. Just like Americans did.

So are you trying to tell me that something like a FoNS would be considered a show for kids? I don’t believe it.

Just saiyan.

Well, it was published in a weekly magazine for young boys, so yes. It was a show for kids.

most of it is for kids though. can’t really blame her for not recognizing the exceptions to the rule, especially when none of it is popular lol

I agree. My point is, SF does not LOOK, as in basic visual art style, like the common cookie cutter anime style. Also DBZ is probably the only anime a grown up could getaway with watching.

It’s pretty huge, still.
