What makes a fighting game broken?

technically , every damn game is broken. some moreso than others. every game has shit that people think is stupid. if not, everyone would be playing the same game.

i said it before, millions of times, and ill say it again, it all comes down to what kind of BS can/will you tolerate

The word broken in essence simply means “fucked up.” Either a character or a whole game system can be broke. Here are some examples:

Broken Characters:

MvC2- The God Four- When a game has characters so fucking good that they deserve a god tier then you know it’s broken.

3S- Yun SAIII- Yun by himself isn’t broken, but when he has SAIII he definitely is IMO. A small asa meter that can do half-life damage? WTF?

T5- Steve- An infinite in a 3D fighting game? Is this possible?

Broken Game Systems:

SCIII- So many damn glitches that it’s simply absurd.

MvC2- Does this honestly need explaining?

And just because something is broken doesn’t make it bad, just look at MvC2. Who here could testify and say that MvC2 isn’t broken? Yet it gets more playtime than a majority of other fighting games.

Easily abused moves. Sweep kicks in Mortal Kombat back in the day. That’s what I think when I think broke. You just keep sweeping even if they’re down and they still get owned by the time they get up. G’times…unless your ass got caught in the loop, then you just lost 2 Chuck E. Cheese tokens. Better hope you brought your report card!

Note:
-Chuck E. Cheese may NOT have Mortal Kombat. It was used for a joke.
-Report cards gave you tokens for every A.
-I am currently banned from Chuck E. Cheese’s for not taking off my shoes in the ball pit…

yun sa3 is gay beyond all imagination! Wasn’t evo 2006 thrilling with all those yun whores!

Heh, people can bitch about o.sagat, but at least sagat looks like a bad ass. Yun looks like a little faggot

I think that sums up why Marvel is IMO the best fighting game ever.

when theres so little variety that going into a new match isn’t fun.

I think there are many many factors and definitions of broken. A game can be broken when the hit boxes are off or the moves come out too random (I’m looking at you Dungeons and Dragons: Blood and Steel) Or maybe too many glitches where the game is basically unplayable. But then there’s the “I’ve spent ninety hours straight playing this game and I’ve found these problems” “brokenness”. This afflicts marvel (and any game that’s been played extensivly) what happens here is that although the game may seem relatively balanced at first as the tiers develop a few choice characters rise to the top. This isn’t broken but merely a factor of any game (not just fighting games) I think the game becomes truly broken when the glitches and the tiers make it practically unplayable to the unitiated.

 1. The system makes crappy characters even crappier at high level play. You won’t see any low tier based teams winning tourney’s anytime soon.

 2. I thought Mario was the best game ever not marvel? Simple mistake on your part :wgrin:

Broken Characters.

You know it’s broken if japan doesn’t play it.

there’s potentially 2.

there was step-G. which wasn’t really a glitch, but more really poor game design. It let you cancel your sidesteps into block, but still keep most the sidestep properties. basically what happened is that it was a low risk high reward option whenever you felt your opponent might attack. if your opponent tried to stop your step-Ging with a horizontal attack you just kept blocked. if he did a verticle attack you either stepped and got a free punish or blocked. the only thing step g didn’t defeat were lows. but lows did pidly damage, and knockdowns were mostly unsafe and poorly rewarding.

the true glitch of sc2 was “g2” allowing you to cancel a lot of states directly to block. it had parry timing and worked while in GI stun, guard break stun, various whiff stuns and various stance changing stuns.

this wasn’t really that bad. it made certain attacks slightly safer, and it made GI games slightly different, but didn’t affect the game any worse than RC did for cvs2.

im surprised nobody has mentioned T4 Jin. lazer scraper JF into uppercut launch into half life combo… broken.

"What makes a fighting game broken?"
Broken-ness depends solely on the community.

If it’s called HNK.

On a serious note. I think a game is ‘broken’ when there are various design flaws, that can be exploited.
Top tiers don’t mean broken games. Unbeatable characters, timer glitches, character freeze glitches, among others, do.

Then you got bullshit like, crough cancelling, easy 100%'s, and Dragon Uppercuts that don’t end.

THIS IS A BROKEN GAME…

fisting of the north star

oh whoopie another chain heavy 2d fighter, as if we need another

that dragon punch shit is retarded, its worth trying in the arcade just to see if anyone trys to beat you up for using it

as many problems HNK has though, its still loads of fun, and sets high hopes for a sequal/new version

And they play stuff as crazy as this: (wich I thought to be broken a long time ago) at high level!

WTF was that?

And as for HNK, why the hell are y’all hating on it? New fighting game franchises rarely come by, so I find it stupid for the fighting game community to shot down these new titles before they get a chance to flourish.

Easy infinites and 100% combos, and characters that have attacks whit Supreme priority.

Shut the fuck up.

EDIT:

OMFG, my eyes are bleeding !

lack of in-depth beta test, period.
