What makes a fighting game broken?

What excatly makes a fighting game broken in your opinion?

A Lack of Balance amongst the characters.

resemblance to MvC2

HEYOOO!!!

stuff, different kinds of it.

It’s hard to say, since it tends to be dependent on which game you’re talking about. But generally, I’d say that a game is broken if the outcome of a match does not 99% depend on the skills of the players. If there are patterns that are easy to exploit and difficult to counter, or if there are glitches that take away the need to use the other features of the game play, or if the tiers are so unbalanced that unskilled players can beat skilled players with the right character… that is when a game is broken.

Its broken if something is so absurd that it takes over the game.
For example like in KOF 03 where Duo lon dominated the game, in order to compete you had to pick Dou lon(atleast that what I heard).

MVC2 seems that way since the big four shut down the rest of the cast, but its not just 4/56 that get played its 4 + a variety of assists. Look at MVC2 as how many teams are playable instead of how many characters are. MVC2 is not broken but the balance is not the best, its just good enough to make it great.

When a character is so strong it doesn’t make any sense.

When the game system/character balance is so full of nonsense that it makes the game feel “broken”.

Examples of characters breaking a game:

KOF '03: Duo Lon (he was like playing as a boss character, but without any cheats)
SSV: Yoshitora (easy infinite, overall absurdly solid), Yunfei (can poke once, then run away all day and not get hit)
etc.

Examples of game system breaking a game:
MKA: “aerial rave” system leads to everyone having rejump infinites
OG Mortal Kombats (minus UMK3), Killer Instinct: So many glitches that it makes the game nonsense
Soul Calibur II: this isn’t as bad, but a universal glitch that shuts down all offensive tactics does pose problems.
etc.

“a game is broken if there’s a blatantly dominant strategy for winning.”

is this true? any economics majors in here?

===

similarly a fighting game is broken if there’s a blatantly dominant option. this could be a character that’s better to use regardless of who the other uses (ST Akuma), a tactic that makes the second-best tactic weak in comparison (A2 Custom Combos), whatever.

note that “blatantly dominant” isn’t so easy to gauge (for example, ST Akuma is nothing like 3S Chun or A3 Akuma). it’s subjective, but i’d argue that the line between “top tier” (3S Chun) and “broken” (ST Akuma) isn’t a fine line at all.

(let’s not go into how ST Akuma isn’t broken… that isn’t the point.)

Whats the SC2 glitch?

its broken when there is such an exploitable design flaw that it takes the competitive nature out of it

anything mugen related…

Parry. ZING!~

Does this mean that A3 is broken?
V-ism crouch infinites, does every character have them? That make V-ism the best option right?

‘What makes a fighting game broken?’

if it’s made by snk playmore

Plays like VF. Oh snap. !

^ Quit wasting a part of existance.

teeth

Me losing makes the game broken. Other than that… cheap pokes (chun’s b.hp) and gay infinites (mvc2)

If it’s made by Capcom.
