I don’t think I fit into any of those. I’d call my style OG.
In SF4 this means…
I see most of the openings and can even predict many situations but can’t capitalize on them because I’m old and rusty, I play classic characters like their HF/ST counterparts, barely using any of their newer moves or mechanics. My mind games are strong but often get derailed due to an incomplete knowledge of the modern game. I probably stand a better chance of beating an upper-echelon than the average online flowchart scrub.
I think a lot of it depends on your skill level in each game. I usually throw out all kinds of attacks and think of mixups constantly, not letting the other player have any breathing room when I have a good understanding of the game. When I play a 3D fighter, I suck REALLY bad at offense and just play in a scrubby manner. Lately though, no matter what game it is, I play like a dummy and try to learn the other players strategy and counter them in the later rounds.
I started out as a turtle, but I was much too predictable and only relied on one or two long-distance attacks [one projectile and one normal when they got close]. Fittingly, I am now an Obsessed :wgrin:
In Marvel this is either gonna hurt me or help me (probably hurt lol) because I care too much about one character on my team
I generally play characters with a decent mix of zoning and rushdown. Essentially, I don’t like getting zoned and I don’t like people in my face, so if I can alternate between keeping them away or putting myself on the offensive instead I am happy. However, these types of characters are usually weak defensively which is also my own biggest weakness so I die.
Using GG as an example, I play Faust (strong zoning and some decent pressure/rushdown potential at times) and Dizzy (strong offense with the potential to play keepaway when necessary).
This is a perfect post. 99% of the people on here just play whatever and go for a win. They don’t really have a set “style” they play under. Each person just does what they want and hope it wins. Watch the VAST majority of SFIV videos that have come up in the past couple months. No set style of play, just each person reacting to the other and playing the game.
I’m super offensive, but even one worry over the course of a match can turn me into the turtliest of turtles. Just thinking of the possibility of someone being able to destroy my offense usually makes me chill until I see them slip up, then I go back to being aggressive.
No, seriously, with Ryu as my main I either play an aggressive game, or I play more defensively, it really depends on the situation.
I had to learn the hard way that I really have to adapt my playstyle to my opponent.
Often, I begin a match in a more defensive way, just to feel out my opponent.
Then, if the situation allows it, I love to switch from the turtling, defensive playstile to an kinda rushdown playstile, steamwheeling over the opponent and taking him by surprise. That makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
Unfortunately, that doesn’t happen too often. :bluu:
Edit: As mentioned in a post above, I adapt my playstyle just to win. So I don’t think I suit completely in one of the categories.
Tekken: I play Steve, so most of the time I’m super aggressive with a lot of annoying poking.
SF2/4: Guile and I’m mostly aggressive, but I’ve no qualms about going turtle style when it’s called for. Really depends on the opponent. I’ll zone all day if I feel like it.
Smash: In all honesty, like every character in that game is played super aggressive. However, I try to incorporate more mindgames, which tend to work a lot since many players aren’t used to fighting Ness (my main).
Predictive/Adaptive. Pressurising and quite risk taking, but i know when (and how) to defend and zone when i need to.
I main dictator in SSF2HDR, so as you’d expect i’m quite offense based, (with dictator it’s kill or be killed), but i’m not just rushdown, i like to predict what my opponent is likely to do based on their style, position, and character, and then as soon as they do, have a punish string ready for them. Keeping my distance, and then getting in with the pain and getting back out is a big part of my game.My bison likes working in plenty of space to find a gap or bait a counter, and then exploiting it mercilessly.
I know my matchups, and my game adapts to the weaknesses in my opponent’s style. Depending on their playstyle and favourite techniques, as well as how “on the ball” they are generally, i’ll switch it up and keep them guessing. “Standard responses” are a bad idea against me-If i see you have a standard response to something i do, i’ll bait it, and the next time you try to use it, i’ll fuck you up with something different that you weren’t expecting.
I adapt as much and as quickly as possible. I tend to be offensive and feint a lot trying to draw attacks or mistakes. I turtle when I need to, but its on a purely “as needed” basis
