What is your fighting game play style?

I was thinking about how the local players at my arcade usually play and I was wondering how you guys at SRK play.

Here are the play styles that David Sirlin used for fighting games. Please choose one of these or make up your own whether it be rushdown, randomness, or a combination of sorts.

  • The Turtles
  • The Attackers
  • The Obsessed
  • The Snakes
  • The One True Style
  • The Invincible and The Beast

I think I’m an attacker and end up turtling when I’m about to die. It just feels natural to turtle when in a dieing state.

I’m an attacker, but I’m passive-aggressive. I stick and move, bob and weave, but overall, my playstyle is extremely aggressive, which explains my attraction to characters with a more brutal nature.

i’m very defensive. i dont play flashy at all. i just do what i got to do to get the win. however, i dont like to watch defensive play.

I’m usually rushdown, but I change styles to fit each and every situation.

EDIT: I do like playing Bait-and-Watch a lot though.

I’m definitely rushdown in most cases. I like pressuring my opponent giving him as few options as possible.

Eh… I’m also single move-obsessive/spammy if it works. I don’t play broken characters much though.

I would say a mixture of defensive and rushdown. I usually bust in and try to get my hits in as fast as possible and then play it safe the rest of the match. Or if the other person fucks up then I rush them again.

Also, that site has crashed my firefox 4 times. Wtf?

I like to play somewhat defensive…mainly trying to keep it safe, unless I notice a pattern my opponent has and I want to exploit it through a fairly unsafe, but rewarding method. I will occasionally get aggressive to throw off my opponent.

I am totally going to sit down and read each and every one of these unique posts.

I’m a turtle in every sense of the word. I’ll stand there literally forever never pressing a button and waiting for you to make a move. I’ll run the clock down, I’ll run away, I’ll block forever. Seriously, I really never feel comfortable ever attacking in any situation. I generally frown upon flashy, rushdown gameplay as well, only because I feel I’m losing because I’m not fighting a thinking opponent. My thing is to sit there and counter attack all day and make people think twice about hitting buttons against me.

And while I love to see rushdown gameplay from a spectator view. I don’t mind really seeing turtle. I believe two turtles is the ultimate chess match. I also enjoy fighting other turtles, though I tend to do better against people insisting on rushing me down. My thing is to slow down the pace of the match, because the slower the match is, the more it’s in my favor.

I play a mix of Zoning and Rushdown. See how they handle the zone and if they can’t, then i close in and pressure up close, then go back to zoning once things go bad. I’m not necessarily good though, but it seems to be my mentality for the most part.

Every player’s style is a unique and special snowflake.

Mine, for instance,

Play like shit for most of the round, then tenaciously cling to life hopefully enough to even the odds. Bungle plenty of otherwise awesome attacks thanks to junky toy joypad. Repeat stupid tactical errors in an inept attempt at a reverse-psychological fakeout.

I’d say exceptionally good players are generally decent turtles. Justin Wong and Steve H are notorious turtles. Also in real sports, defense is generally the making of a good team. Muhommed Ali was much more of a keep away, runway boxer and not a brawler. The same seem to be true of fighting games as well.

Indeed. I’ll admit i get extremely angry if someone turtles way too much and I start rushing recklessly due to impatience. At the same token, if I play a character with a charge move, ill quickly switch to a turtling playstyle and go back and forth from Rushing and Turtling.

To be honest, I haven’t found my style yet, it wavers too much. I’m usually rushdown, or turtule, or I just go normal…even though all the characters I play are rushdown(Abel, Fei Long, Makoto, Feng Wei, Brolly, Future Trunks, Sanada, etc.)

Depends on game…
I don’t jump in SF or SS. At all. But give me a LB/FF/RB/KoF you bet your ass I’d be jumping in like a frog. Also I rush a lot more in EFZ/GWED/Tekken than I do in VG/VF/SC. It’s all about what feels right. I’m also a style over substance type, if I have a choice of follow-up jump combos or fireball/grab reset setup tree after a launcher, I almost always go for the less damaging, but more annoying reset setup route.

I used to be pretty balanced in Street Fighter, my play style depended a lot on the match-up and on my life gauge… with a little preference for rushdown phases.
(I guess everyone feels the same though…)

  • I didn’t use grabs that often
  • Used a lot of jabs and lows
  • Used a lot of strings
  • Always tried to wait for the best opportunity to pull that flashy combo I practiced in training mode for hours!^^

Now I don’t play Street fighter so often anymore, I switched to Guilty Gear and I play exclusively Jam… so I am more like “rushdown all the way, even if it gets me killed”. ^^

  • I use IAD a lot, low-punch, aiming for that 2S counter hit, mind-fucks with the 236+P flip.
(I guess this is just how Jam should be played anyway…)

…there not much else I can do anyway, Jam’s defense and turtling options are pretty limited due to her short range compared to other chars. So I basically need to get-in, and once at range, just never stop hitting until the other guy goes down!

I enjoy this a lot more! …I think Jam is the most interesting and funniest character to play with (all fighting games included).
I tend to find every other char in any other game too slow and boring now.

I practice the ancient Japanese art of Yomi.

I play the Mind Game.

My mains are:

SS V Special: Genjuro
Garou: Gato and Rock
SF 3: Alex and Dudley
SF 2: Dictator and Claw
KOF: Yamazaki, Billy, Rugal, and Kyo

I’m a combination of, “the attacker” and the “obsessed”.

I hate to turtle and try to be aggressive most of the time, sometimes overly so. Its all about the offensive, even when i’m taking defensive measures i’m constantly looking for a way to resume the attack(i try to remain as calm as possible also).

I’m also “obsessed” in that if i find a particular routine that works, i’ll often just stick to that and try to sharpen my skill with it as much as possible. Which leads to one of my weaknessnes of predictability for those who have played against me enough.

Not me. Actually when i’m near death my aggressiveness skyrockets.

I guess its because i’d rather go down fighting, and or just be put out of my misery if all is lost. Turtle deaths are the sad way to go out.
