What is the justification on making games more "casual friendly?"

Hey, why don’t you go back to practicing in your dreams. Maybe then you’ll start winning in your dreams too.

hahahahahaha

lol @ people attacking me for insulting those idiots. can’t believe anyone here thinks that was “discussion”

are you all really so stupid that you don’t see what’s so obvious?

So you are against dumbing down games as well then?

You know, maybe the whole world isn’t a bunch of idiots, maybe the only idiot here is you?

no, the whole world isn’t a bunch of idiots. just you guys

so rude…

 ^ This dude just calling everyone an idiot, what a poor troll.

I know right.

He even called VirtuaFighterFour an idiot.

Justin Wong better watch out at EVO.

Good job starting it up again. In case you can’t tell, it’s over.

Depends on what you mean by “dumbing down.” If you mean streamlining things like needlessly complicated motions like Geese’s pretzel then I’m all for that. If you mean doing a SFIV then no.

I’ve said it before. I subscribe to Albert Einstein’s principle. Make everything as simple as possible. But no simpler.

I think a hadoken motion is as simple as it can be expected to be given that the simpler :r:+p has another function. Plus there’s something intuitive about :qcf: for a fireball since it’s a kind of constellation-esque analog to Ryu’s actual fireball animation. What’s intuitive about :db::r::df::d::db::l::df:? That’s just nonsense.

Hey I can do it, too. :db::uf::r::df::ub::l::db::d::df::r:+:3p: It’ll be the deepest fighting game ever.

I understand that you can only do so much with 8 directions and 6 buttons. If you want a robust move list you’ll eventually have to incorporate more than just single directions. And I think Capcom pretty much nailed it back in the early 90s. They found a happy balance between a reasonable control interface and intuitive commands. But once in a while a move in a fighting game is given a command that makes me think to myself, “What’s the point of that motion?”

I want to qualify, though, that I don’t think SFIV is “dumbed down.” I think it’s just screwed up. Capcom didn’t make it easier for new players. They made it easier to mash out shoryukens but it’s certainly not easier for a new player trying to figure out why Bison’s ultra motion causes a teleport. It’s actually harder to do things right in SFIV than in Super Turbo or Alpha.

Wasn’t that idiot omfg nominated for one of SRK’s dumbest posters of the year last year?

Yeah, why hasn’t everyone just put this fool on ignore yet? You post a rational argument that anyone else on this site would either answer in a normal debate and this guy comes back and you get answers like “idiots” or “I shouldn’t have treated you like a smart person to begin with”. Lame.

I’m still wondering how Genchiro won that nomination.

Do you realize how utterly bad every charage character in the game would instantly become if they couldn’t crouch block to charge?

So what is everyone’s stance regarding the thread title? What is the justification on making games more “casual friendly?”

Most say “dumbed down” because that was the intention, but yea, you’re right, SFIV isn’t “dumbed down” in the sense that they made some things more difficult for new players.

To be fair, SK used to mod a lot but he’s been very busy from what I can tell so omfg isn’t banned yet.

We should be careful though, omfg said he’s a FG scientist and is going to enter a tournament some day:

The way I see it is this. “Making something accessible” is incorporating intuitive controls and commands that are reasonably simple while still allowing the player full use of a robust move list and options. “Dumbing down” is removing options and commands for the sake of simplicity even though it hurts the final product.

In that sense, I’d say MvC2 was actually somewhat “dumbed down” when Capcom decided to play with the controls, reducing the number of attack buttons to 4. It didn’t really hurt the game all that much but it just goes to show that it’s not always enough to say something is “dumbed down.” We have to take a good look at how the change fundamentally altered the game before editorializing the decision with loaded terms like “dumb.”

You guys broke his tiny little mind with your discussion, that’s why he’s resorted to insults.

I wonder why he doesn’t dream a better comeback.

FG scientists who have developed a great number of theoretically beneficial attributes such as the ability to practice FGs in their dreams shall soon take over the world!

And the guy has the nerve to call others idiots. If nobody good fucked up, every match would be a win by whoever did the most chip damage after time expires as nobody would ever make a mistake to punish.

Do you realize how little that has to do with anything anyone’s said?

Pretty much. I’m thinking that in general, it just wouldn’t work as well in 2D games, or at least ones where moves start in 3-5 frames and command throws can’t be teched. With SF4 the way it is, it’d still leave the question of whether someone actually deserves even more damage for hits the other person essentially can’t do anything about. You can either make the “normal” versions do really crap damage, which goes back to the issue of having an artificial barrier to doing appreciable damage, or make the “good” versions not do enough to justify going to the trouble of using them.

Alternately, you could make the “good” versions safer to use, which seems like just as much of a mess.

i cant see what that big idiot says because hes ignored but i can see his post from you quoting it and he still doesnt get that i was not talking about awarding peopl for doing commands wrong i was talking about awarding them for doing the inputs efficiently. welp

Oh but his dreams are really night mares of all the top players losing.

I tend to think even high level players like simplicity. At a certain level any awkward command quirks just become nuisances and interrupts what the players really want to do, play against each other. That’s why I think doing that kind of stuff would do more harm than good.

Oh and somebody quote me saying that pimp bishop donjon is mad. I was talking to Caim. He ignores me and still cares what I say. I guess it still bothers him. Oops. I’m a bad person.
