What is guile's worst match up and why?

Most good sim’s will never yoga tower an lp boom and leave tower reserved only for hp or ex booms… or any boom they don’t have time to match with a fire. Correct me if I’m wrong, but yoga tower can be cancelled with a yoga fire, correct? I’ve played against sim’s who use tower extremely effectively. Also, don’t forget his other max screen evasive move, neutral jump > drill. A good sim can pick the spot where your most likely to throw an EX boom, evade it pre-emptively, then cancel into a normal yoga fire. It’s a pretty solid move… maybe I’m just too predictable.

Ibuki, Abel, Sagat, C.Viper, Chun-Li, Dudley and Balrog. I understand why I struggle against Ibuki, Abel and C.Viper. However, I have no damn idea why I am struggling against Sagat, Chun-Li, Dudley and Balrog. Sim was easy once I saw a counter video on his strategy. The two characters I hate losing to the most is Sagat and Abel.

Dhalsim. His low risk zoning game forces Guile to make unsafe decisions which he’s fundementally not designed for.

Abel. Risk reward is highly skewed in his favor. Also Guile’s keep away is designed to punish the most logical methods of approach. Abel’s gameplan revolves around randomly getting in and mixing up for huge damage.

I’d just like to point out that EX boom is not as much of a factor as you guys are making it out to be in the Dhalsim fight. If Dhalsim gets a counter hit, he still comes out ahead in the trade (at least in pure damage, not % of total health) and you can’t punish his limbs on block with it. And most of the time when you do connect, it’s only after neutralizing 1 hit of his fireball for a grand total of 50 damage.

Well, in Dhalsim match up, even a 50 damage can change the whole momentum if you achieve the life lead. Besides the (very slight) push back helps in sending Dhalsim slowly to the corner, or it can be a ume-EX Sonic boom punish to long range limbs if whiffed.

But yea, other than that, it does nothing remarkable. Just keeps Dhalsim on check with his yoga fire freedom…

@ duck strong i totally agree

so i’ve started picking up abel as an alt (amongst my other 10 lol). is there anyone they both struggle against (i’m thinking adon and guy perhaps)?

Abel and Guile both struggle against Akuma majorly, due to their relatively large hitbox allowing Akuma to do fool proof blockstring which leads to good damage on hit, leads to combo + knockdown for more safe and risk free damage via laughably large amount of options, like Demon flip, which is very unpredictable and at random times tends to auto cross up even though the Akuma player did not intend to, which creates more brain damage to your head.

Akuma rapes Guile and Abel without even resorting to footsies or zoning, he can just walk forward and press Heavy kick for auto mix up (works 100% on Abel due to larger hitbox than Guile). Other than him I think Ibuki have enough tools to keep both of them on check, not Akuma-wise but still threatening tools.

plus i think he can do option select demons on abel for fun…but i could be wrong.

yea…i forgot akuma lol. sometimes it’s hard to see an argument against him being the best character in the game ('cept for his low hp).

Overall, he is the best character in the game, especially when his moveset can be considered even with Seth (or even better) and have high hitting combos, and an ultra which does great damage. Good thing that a backfist here, an EX sonic there, air throw counter and one combo kills him.

how do you counter abel’s ultra 2? i get hit by it about 90% of the time…

i still think that the worst matchup for guile is juicebox.

rose(no, I did not list her because she can reflect booms…she can turtle against guile and her normals/command normals can compete with guile in a spacing war, and in a close match i feel she always has the edge.)
sim(obvious)
viper(obvious)
fuerte(obvious)
abel(obvious)
(in no particular order)

That is all really.

I’m a fuerte player, and just wanted to throw this out:

I have often had my splash and run ~ throw attempts countered by guile doing an air throw. This has even countered me when I do a wake up splash. So practice this, it might get you more play against fuerte.

After a player does this successfully… the match usually turns to guile’s favor… It shuts down most of my aerial offenses, forcing me to play on the ground.

I don’t know if anyone posted this info or not, I didn’t read passed the first few posts where a few ppl said fuerte was their pain in the ass opponent.

I can’t believe I forgot Akuma on my list.

Oh yeah, guile can airthrow if guile catches a fuerte early enough but…that doesnt really change the matchup imo.

no way. ultra 2 is far to slow to punish booms and ex pc goes through them but guile recovers so fast that he can still hit bison out of it or block. guile got far better buffs.

the matchup is a nightmare for bison. guile can throw slow booms all day and airgrab stomps, AA all of bisons jump ins easily because of the floaty jump and quick sb recovery and stuff bisons scissors pressure with st. jab and st. fierce all day. even if bison gets in, he has low damage, no overhead, and far too high jump for a quick, not a big threat for guile if he is good at teching. its definitely 7-3, imo its almost 8-2…

my friend plays guile and usually after 5 matches I just switch characters because its so frustrating for bison. I pick akuma or balrog and beat him easily although I am much better with bison.

Nah, the only saving grace for Bison in that match up is getting close with EX-Psycho Crusher because it absorbs two fireball hits, but if it eats an EX-Sonic Boom, there’s no chip damage and he’s free for punish when he gets near Guile.

This match is super bad in the range of 3 to 7 because Bison can’t get past sonic booms safely. Jumping in or flying in with special moves isn’t an option because of air throw and crouching fierce.

Bison has to trade a lot of chip damage to get close to Guile to poke. Only time Guile’s sonic boom would get punished with Bison’s Ultra 2 is when they throw out carelessly on wake up most of the time.

sim
fuerte
akuma
clever ibukis

This is what I do when I play sims:

Thing to note is I’m generally not a turtle Guile…

-Beginning of the match, sims usually throw out cr.hp, thinking ima throw an sb. I use cr.mk…stuffs it everytime.

-yoga fire spamming… throw booms to match and build up meter.

-ex fire comes out. They always try to low teleport behind you… I step back a bit and hit s.hp. if I am cornered during the ex fire…I jump over the ex fire, block over head hp, then do cr.mk for limbs.

-I try to stay close to avoid staying far away from sim because that is where he is strongest. Staying close also shuts down some options for sims ultra 1. I try to stay close enough to grab him out of it.

-If they throw a fire, jump over it, I walk forward, and he back jumps with a hp, i focus through it, then its a free sweep. Then comes up mix-ups. (j.lk cross-up, target combo, hp, booms, etc.) At times I fadc a s.hp to get a free throw.

-Be prepared to use a lot of meter during this match. ex-booms are your best weapons at a far range.

-Summary:

  1. Use s.hp for teleports.
  2. Build meter when possible.
  3. cr.mk stuffs low limbs.
  4. stay close to avoid ultra setups.
  5. Don’t turtle! imo sim has better turtle ability.

So yeah, this is the way I handle sims. I know a lot of your guys might think this isn’t the best way to go at it, but for my type of Guile, this is what works. Any advice to me, I’ll glady accept it. =D

PS: to respond to the actual subject of this thread, i believe that the worst match-ups for Guile are Elf, Juri, and maybe Blanka. I don’t have evidence to back these claims up, but they are who I lose to the most lol.

i’ve found adon is a pain in the ass for guile. i played someone with similar skills to gamerbee. they played very patiently, then destroyed me after a knockdown.

Yeah… I hate Adon nowadays too. I hate it when they cancel jump into Jaguar tooth and when they knock me down. One thing I noticed about Adon players is they like to jump and they have 2 air specials so they get ultra 2ed by Guile easily. His moves do quite a lot of chip damage.
