I think the big thing about the Sim matchup is that people perceive it differently. People who feel it is hard believe you need to get in on Sim. This is not a really big leap to make, as Sim has very few good up close options, so naturally people think they need to get in on Sim and take advantage of this. Still, I maintain that you don’t really have to get in on Sim. You can pretty much throw sonic booms across the screen all match, and watch for him trying to get a few moves in. Sim doesn’t have a reliable way in on Guile. From the Sim players perspective, they are probably thinking the same way guile players think. They believe they need to get in on Guile. In truth neither needs to get in on each other. Sim has superior space control with his limbs, Guile has a superior projectile game. Both can’t advance on each other without a considerable amount of risk involved.
As far as U2 is concerned for Sim, you have to keep in mind that Guile’s U2 serves are a problem from him as well. He has to be very careful about teleporting and jumping when Guile has U2. Also you have to factor in that Sim U2 doesn’t do a lot of damage, at least not for an ultra. It’s significant enough, but it doesn’t necessarily put him back in the game. But maybe I’m speaking out of ignorance, because most Sims I face prefer to stick with U1. I play Sim casually, and I can’t see any real benefits of U2 over U1. U1 was actually buffed a lot in this game, and I still think it’s the ultra Guile players should worry about. Sim get’s huge damage on guesses from U1, and that’s really the ultra that puts him back in the game.
Sim can't start IAT shennanigans against Guile really. Trying to IAT his sonic booms will leave him in a bad position. From the Sim player's perspective, it's already hard enough to do it to Sagat, Ryu, and Ken. Guile is even more difficult. Most Sims with a brain won't teleport against Guile unless they're desperate. Sim has no reliable ways to do damage, or take initiative in this match. So he's really in the same situation Guile is in. Which is why I think it's 5-5
I think sim is hard for guile. The basic problem is sims st.fp. Guile really wants to be right outside of sims fierce range where he can throw safe booms. Anything closer and its pretty much a death trap and guile has little options. Good sims only match boom and it seems if they are always looking to trade with fierce which is in sims favor by far. This makes it hard for guile to hold ground and he’s eventually in the corner with nowhere to go. Advancing on sim isnt the best idea and standing anywhere in FP range is death. Since FP controls 3/4 of the screen what else is there for guile? Sim builds meter fast and can avoid booms easily with slides, tower, fire/flame, jump headbutt thingy.
So basically, guile is easily forced to the corner because he can not compete within st.fp range and has no real good way in. Perfect example is the art vs WH and lamerboi matches from evo.
Here’s the thing: Dhalsim doesn’t need to win the fireball war. He can easily use his tower move to evade a boom on the spot, and from there he can continue the assault. Not to mention him being within limb range makes it very hard to throw booms without trading. Guile needs to get in. Check my Youtube, I posted a match against a good 'Sim.
As a Sim player, it’s impossible to tower booms on reaction. You have to anticipate it. And decent zoning Guiles can force you to guess wrong. It really isn’t that easy to tower every sonic boom. If Guile see’s this he’ll start switching up speeds, and forcing you to early tower. This puts sim in a bad spot, and he has to guess how he can cancel the tower. The best tower cancel would be to focus and backdash, but in doing that he loses ground. Towering sonic booms is an option, but it’s not the safest one.
I guess what I’m saying is trying to get in on Sim is basically you playing the game he wants you to play. While other characters really don’t have a choice in the matter, Guile does. Guile remains effective across the screen, and builds meter fast. Ex sonic booms are all a threat for Sim. Sim wants you to dash at him, walk at him, and jump at him. What he doesn’t want you to do is stay out of his ranges and and keep up projectile pressure. This matchup is just really tedius, long and boring. But it can be fun, because like with Akuma, I think it’s a huge spacing war. It’s good to approach Sim in this matchup, but you don’t have to spend the entire match approaching Sim. Knowing when to persue and when to hold your ground is important. I guess this match is a game of chicken, to see who will take the offensive initiative first. IMO it will have to be Sim, because when Guile gets meter, then he is going to have problems keeping up in the projectile war. In his favor, he probably has trickier baits than Guile would have. Overall trying to spend the match getting close to him is basically giving him the game. Guile isn’t Ryu (who actually needs to get close to Sim to beat him). You have a lot of long range tools at your disposal where you can zone him and still threaten him from a safe distance.
I’m really interested in what make Rose such a bad matchup. I guess I don’t see it. Anyone care to elaborate. I play against so few Rose’s, and there is only one in my area, who I never get to play against.
This match is pretty interesting because dieminion seems to be doing things a lot diffrent than previous matches of him vs art. He seems to take a more aggressive stance in this match and has found a decent use of FA to counter sims s.fp. Dieminion no longer seems to be zoned out to the corner as easily in past matches thanks to this and it has made a big difference.
Edit - Art seems to adjust to the FA by doing more s.mp pokes. Another thing to note is ex sb is really nice, but sim does not have to play guiles game at any time. Arts use of ex fire also seems to let him do whatever he wants after that with no worry. I think this match is 6-4 sim.
Rufus? I could see it in vanilla, but not sure about now. He got a damage nerf right? Between sonic hurricane trades, df.hk juggles, his reduced damage and nerfs… I could see this becoming even for super. The problem that skewed it in vanilla is that guile could keep rufus out as well as rufus could get in, but guile did about half as much damage doing his thing and had no comeback ability, and when rufus got in, he did oodles of damage. This is Wong’s rufus we’re talking about here.
Dhalsim is a bad match up. He’s not as bad as a lot of people think, but it’s not as easy as Branh says it is either. Mainly due to the fact that it’s easier for Dhalsim to comeback than Guile. If you’re at a life loss, you need to make some risky approaches to get your life lead back. Meanwhile, Dhalsim can safely slide under booms until your near the corner and yoga sniper / low attack / bait an AA you for an easy 100ish damage… effectively nullifying those two bars you spent to tag him with a couple EX booms.
Any character with a solid vortex isn’t healthy for Guile and thats Ibuki, El fuerte, Akuma and C.Viper (although C.Vipers vortex is no where near as strong as the other three.)
And I really think Dhalsim - Guile is pretty even, the match belongs to the person who gets a small life lead and can outturtle the other player and Dhalsim and Guile are mad turtle chars.
Abel used to be really bad back in vanilla but now Guile can gain meter alot faster so he can Sommersault fadc out of Abels mixups alot easier.
And then there’s Rose… I dont play against alot of Rose players but when I do play someone about my lvl I usually lose and I really dont know why, Rose is a mystery…
Not for a good dhalsim. They make you feel as though using EX sb in a fireball war is sooo completely useless. I’m not trying to get in on sim usually, i’m trying to switch boom speed and get a baby life advantage, and then stay back so that they get frustrated and make mistakes. Problem is, there’s a MUCH higher chance of guile making a mistke than dhalsim, and the mistakes are much more costly since dhalsim as more scoring opportunities for more damage.
Rose is like dhalsim only not as bad in my opinion. Akuma match isn’t as bad because auto-correct SH can punish a crossup hurricane kick bigtime if you guess correctly, plus he doesn’t do as much stun and footsy wars improve, still a tough match though. Once a guile is playing well enough to get an abel player to respect him, abel isn’t all that bad. Fuerte feels like a coin toss really, viper match isn’t as hard for me as it used to be.
Dhalsim just feels soo bad. Against others character it’s definitely definitely not easy, but guiles options either get more reward or are just flatout safer and that’s why i think the match is seen as 7-3 dhalsim by the japanese
Trust me yoga tower is not very useful in the guile matchup. Chuck a slow boom, walk up behind it, backfist. Problem solved. 120 frames of recovery on that yoga tower.
Besides… those EX Sonic Booms go VERY fast. Yoga Tower is not an instant move, it takes a bit to move his body upward, you’d almost have to predict an EX boom to avoid it. It’s not worth the guess of a slower sonic boom.
