I’d take either of them to be honest.
i love shay laren
Artfully depressing simile.
I wasn’t even aware of 3rd Strike until 2009.
I’m not exactly an “09er”, as I’ve been played fighting games since I was 6 but I started taking them seriously when SF4 dropped. “Seriously” as in I wanted to learn combos, know what I’m doing, etc.
I’m still learning, I still have a long, long way to go. Anyway, to get to the point, I didn’t understand what was so great about 3S when I found out about it. I found a way to play it on my PC and still didn’t get it and actually thought it sucked (because of course, I got my ass whooped and the execution level is very high). People kept talking about 3S, no matter what game was on a stream, what combo video I was watching or what fighting game forum I browsed, I always read something about 3S.
I started playing 3S last December. I mean, I played a little on ArcLive prior to that, but I was still heavily into SF4 during that time and so was the one friend I had to play fighting games with (all my other friends don’t give FGs a chance). I can’t get enough of it now. I still suck at the game, I can only parry fireballs, but I prefer 3S over every single other game I’ve played, even KOF13.
Everything about the game draws me to it. The music, characters, personality of the characters, stages, how difficult it is to play, knowing that playing it will help me get better at other fighting games but most importantly: the huge history, cult following and love the game has going for it.
If it weren’t for the sheer fetish some people have for this damn game, I would’ve never ‘stuck’ with it.
Hopefully, I get better at it.
It’s fun.
eh i’m a 2011’er. i started playing fighting games the week Arcade Edition dropped. I got into the scene wanting to play competitively before I even started. Little did I know, that it wasn’t going to be so easy and fast as I thought. I kept playing SF4 but also heard that 3SOE was going to be coming out, so I decided to try it out on GGPO and Supercade. I still remember my first match having a pink Sean beating the shit out of me. Since then, I have put about 3x more time into 3S than into SF4 and I honestly love SF3. Its just a shame that I got into the game so late where its competitive life is close to being dead. I still play both SF3 and SF4 but I wish SF3 wasn’t frowned upon by taking it seriously. I was at a local meetup last week and asked if they wanted to play 3rd strike (all the people there are seriously good SF4 tournament players) and they hit me one of these
and said “…no…”
3rd Strike is immortal peeps.
I love third strike because it makes me feel happy
Where do you live for 3S to be frowned upon…?
My friend who is new to fighting games actually PREFERS 3S over SF4 and he can’t even Shoryuken/Hadouken consistently (he actually never Shoryukens. “It’s too hard”).
If you have a PS3, I’ll play 3S with you all the time. I definitely won’t be a challenge, though.
I played 3s back when it released on PS2/Xbox. But just basically dicked around. Played casually in college.
I’ve only been playing with any sort of diligence and intelligence for like a year and a half.
Time doesn’t have a whole lot to do with it. Effort does.
Giving Flare and Therapist a challenge is what keeps me playing. Not that anyone else from dtown isn’t a challenge, just those two are definitely the top. I want to make them work for a win. Just having closer matches more often between skilled players. That’s still a long way off but i have flashes of brilliance.
That’s refreshing to hear as I’ve always thought that time has a lot to do with skill, especially in 3S (playing someone with 8+ years experience is overwhelming, but fun as fuck).
That face actually means “areyouawizard”. They’re shocked with your refined taste and they’re all mirrin that you play deep good games which they will never approach because its to hard for theyr little wimpy chicken minds.
Obviously time is a factor because you only have X amount of time to practice and play. But it’s much more about what you do in that time and what you focus on and how you go about improving your own gameplay.
Therapist is a great example. He went from no experience in 3S to being able to compete with some of the best in about a year and a half (his words).
On the topic of experienced players.
Honestly the first time I played him I had no idea what to do. I think I just sat in the corner and did nothing basically. I was just too afraid to throw something out and be punished terribly for it. Also the constant pressure from demonflip and kara throw kind make you feel helpless. His Yun too, same kind of thing. I just couldn’t deal with the speed and aggression.
but that’s where the fun of 3S lies. because if you try to be safe, you will be annihilated. you need to know when to just throw shit out there, and when to be safe. and there’s no guideline for that. it’s just a feeling. that constant see-saw is what I enjoy. sf4 to me is just sooooo incredibly safe. if your shoryu is blocked just FADC it. stupid. there’s no tension. it’s just a long drawn out series of pokes and combos that do no real damage.
This… This is why I hate SF4. Every time I play SF4 and some does a special move (especially Bison -__-) I want to punish them for doing it because I know they did it mindlessly w/o any care of the repercussions. That just pissed me off. The fact that I can’t deal punishment after a scissor kick really just made me put the game down and say NO, this is not how a fighting game should be played. In 3S, if you throw out a special move there are many factors players can do to punish you for being risky. All of that is gone in SF4. The focus attack nonsense is just terribly implemented too…
Oh, hi FBI.
The hypnotic powers of this particular animated gif are impressive.
deserved a second repost.
- Amazing fighting engine
- Scrubby games made me appreciate 3rd Strike’s gameplay more when I ignored it before
- 3S Chun Li is thicker than many black women I have ever seen.
5th times the charm. And the ones in the first gif are real too. What kind of man can’t tell real from fake boobs? Your interest in them just isn’t strong enough Reaper-san.
I play 3s because it’s one of the few fighting games I think is actually good AND fun. I have a bit of a personal connection to it but I’ll save the LiveJournal stories for another time. It’s a game I truly WANTED to learn from the get go. Even when it pisses me off (like earlier tonight) I still come back to it because I love it.
