What happened to adventure games? NEW KING'S QUEST PREMIER TONIGHT!

For those so inclined. Chrome 14 can now run ScumVM

Curfew is fun for being freeware I hope the developer gets to make a real game on pc sometime.

Not sure if serious

i think the first point and click game i ever played was monkey island 2 back when i was about 5. i had no clue what i was doing in it but specifically remember getting hung over the bridge at the start and losing all of your money. it wasnt until many years later that i would play it again and actually have half a clue as to the aim of these kinds of games.

heres my top 5 adventure games i think.

5. Full Throttle .

This was the game that really got me into adventure games. everything about this game just totally floored me at the time. Ill never forget when me and my friend figured out about knocking on the guys trailer door and then kicking it open to knock him out. Plus the incredible music on the intro, scumbag Ripburgers chilling voice, thinking Ben was a TOTAL BADASS, the totally nailbiting ending on the plane, jumping over the grand canyon, holy shit i could on and on. Fucking love this game

4. Blade Runner
During a binge of Lucasarts adventure games, i got my heart set on playing Blade runner. It was futuristic, looked cool, and was made by the same guys who made all my other favourite adventure games! Well, imagine my disappointment when i couldnt find the lucasarts logo anywhere on the box (it was westwood games i think, i was pretty young still), i almost didnt buy the game, but im glad i hit that one on the head.

The game was really laggy on my PC, the cutscenes wouldnt play the sound properly, the shooting was incredibly difficult due to the lag, but oh man i still loved the game so much. Using the voight kampff to determine humans from skinjobs, the photo analysis thing letting you view crime scenes from multiple angles, the freedom of the choice you had in how to deal with situations. From the moment i stepped inside Runciters animal shop and saw the carnage that had taken place i was hooked. I somehow even managed to play through the game about 3 times without realising you could get a photo of Lucy from the first crime scene. Talk about a massive game changer.

i desperately want to play this game again but im having massive problems getting it to run on my PC :frowning:

3. Day of the Tentacle

This easily deserves to be in anybodies (at least) top 5 list. being able to play as 3 different characters in 3 different time zones (all the while dealing with the same messed up family) was really unique and hilarious. there was a lot of room for trial and error in this game what with sending all the different items to different time zones using the chron-o-john and the results were never anything short of hilarious. entering dead cousin ted into the human show and changing the american flag into something resembling a tenatacle, plus having an overweight stoner sort diplomatic issues with the founding fathers is a stroke of genius. Having a full version of maniac mansion on the PC was just the icing on the cake too.

2. The curse of Monkey Island.

i know this may be a controversial one esp since it didnt really involve the original makers of the series, but i think the direction that was taken was definately a good one in terms of setting a direction for the art and visual feel of the game (love those amazing clouds). All of the main characters made total sense when accompanied by probably some of the best voice casting in videogame history (Dominic Armato IS Guybrush Threepwood), as well as really bringing the characters to life, such as the ballsy governor of melee island Elaine Marley and the undead/zombie pirate lechuck.

This game for me has some of the most memorable scenes from any of the monkey games, such as the inept (lone) crewman of the sea cucumber with his monkey crewmates, the hilarious singing outburst from your barbershop quartet. The legacy of the Goodsoup family crypt, peeling a skin map from a sunburnt mans back… Plus the little easter eggs such as the awesome LeChuck doll you get from Skull (or is it a duck) island. And lets not forget this was the game that introduced Murray (the invincible horrific demonic skull)

1. Grim Fandango

Hands down, THE BEST adventure game in history. Nothing else comes close to this game. Incredibly memorable cast of characters, every voice cast to perfection (i nearly flipped my lid when i watched an episode of Ugly Betty and heard who was the guy who played her dad (Manny Calavera)) some of the most genius puzzles ever devised, that were also simple and logical (why would you lock an open door?) The locations are amazing to look at and explore, everything there feels like it has a history and that the world has been there for long before we got there. I love the occasional visits to the land of the living where everything literally looks like it has been cut from stylish lifestyle magazines and comes across as extremely fake and materialistic (and pretty scary too).

Its borderline criminal that there has been nothing since featuring Manny, Glottis, Meche, and the rest, but then, i also wouldnt have it any other way. The game stands on its own and deserves nothing less than its legendary status. Im looking forward to replaying this game again, as im sure i will do many more times.

Would Asura’s Wrath count?

Because regardless of the game’s criticisms, that game was one ***hell ***of an adventure.

Xcom : Enemy Unknown?

Asura’s Wrath is an interactive anime. It’s only game in the loose sense of the word.

Games nowadays are expected to be multiplayer in some shape or form no matter how tacked on it may be. Adventure games tend to be lone experiences. Do the math.
As for my favorites…

  1. Okami
  2. The Prince of Persia series
  3. Ocarina of Time
  4. Grim Fandango
  5. Sam and Max series

To answer the TC, basically adventure games have at best 10-20 hours of play time with near zero replay value, and it became increasingly difficult to justify paying 50 bucks for an adventure game. Hopefully the era of indie gaming with adventure games being cheaper and being funded by Kickstarters will led to their revival.

Not everyone, but mainly Kojima.

When I realised I could complete Full Throttle in less than an hour, I died somewhat inside.

You are going to be waiting forever unless like, Tim acquires the IP or something.

i still have alot of good adventure games
world illusion with mickey and donald
okami
crash bandicoot
spyro
sly cooper
shantae risky’s revenge
donkey kong country
these games i i still have an inetrest in even though there old but i play them ^.^

question is why is resident shit 6 so fucking shitty that I didnt even feel the need to play anymore after I finished leon’s campaign >:(

Point taken. Though I suspect more than just a few adventure and RPG game makers are looking to make something more cinematic than game-y.

I don’t have a top 5. I did enjoy most of the GTA games. They are full of exploration. I’ve also enjoyed the Saints Row series for the same reason. Sacred 1 and 2. Darksiders 1 and 2. Twilight Princess GC version. Diablo 3. That’s all I’ve got for now.

Same thing happened to my older friend when I watched him play it:rofl: Some of these games had help hot lines:lol:

Both of you are definitely on to something but let’s be real the pixel hunting tedium of these games as flawed and horrible as they may be added to the overall charm of them in a lot of cases.

All of those are platformers completely different genre with the exception of maybe Okami which like Zelda I think is more action than adventure.

None of those are adventure games. An adventure game can have combat sure but any game that emphasizes it by definition is not included in the genre. I never played Darksiders though maybe I’m wrong on that one.

Damn a lot of people here really don’t understand what the genre actually is.

Anyone play The Walking Dead game? It’s the surprise hit of the year for me. It’s GDLK if you don’t mind QTE’s and it plays all the old classics:tup:

I just got Portal 2 on steam, another great example of classic adventure gaming, but I probably won’t get to it this year. Well there’s always 2013…oh wait.

Really? Because I was alway under the impression that adventure meant exploration. Most games of the past and present were labeled as action adventure. There have never been any “just adventrue” games. They’ve always had an element of platforming and action.

Anyone try Theresia Dear Emile for the DS? I remember searching around youtube and I came by this videos of this game and it looked really interesting.

I recommend 999 for the DS if you are interested on some recent adventure games. Ghost Trick I dunno if it would count since it’s more like puzzles but it’s a great game.
