Why do people keep bringing up Smash and lack of skill or other personal opinions? Sure, some people don’t like Smash for various reasons, but it’s also kind of hard to find people (especially on the internet) who likes EVERY game on the EVO lineup.
And the whole skill argument is absurd. I’m a big smash player and I’ll tell you that it takes no skill. I’m also a big Guilty Gear player and I’ll tell you that that game takes no skill as well. Argument solved. But while I’m at it, I should inform you that EVERY fighting game takes no skill. Why else do you think someone like Justin Wong and Ricky Ortiz can win at so many games? You’re just doing the same thing over and over again. It’s like: wait for your opponent to leave an opening and then hit him with your best combo. Repeat over and over. And these so called “advanced techniques” that everyone oozes all their skill over are great at first, but then what? You guessed it, you do the same the advanced technique over and over. This is the same problem with sports and boardgames. Everyone keeps saying Michael Jordan is so great but he just found ways to throw a ball into a hoop over and over again. And he couldn’t even do that at least half the time.
Since I’m pretty sure someone will try to respond let me point out that the previous paragraph was not to be taken seriously.
I think the problem with asking for Smash is that many of the proponents (save Scamp) are saying silly things like “it takes more skill than ggxx” or such.
Similarly, anti-Smash people like to bring up the whole “fuck this kiddie game” idea. SF has its own share of circus freaks, so I don’t think that’s fair to say.
While I don’t play Smash hardcore, I’ve played enough to know that good smash play is pretty sick, and it would be a good addition to Evo.

You apparantly haven’t been to any Evo, or seen anyone making BYOC tournies, but even if you DO book shit, peeps are notorious for not showing to Evo(even I’m guilty). Shit happens that you can’t show up come August. Most of us with demanding jobs simply can’t complete our plans until we know the exact when and where at least 3 months out(or in my case, have your plans change because you have to report to Bumfuck nowhere, CA 2 days before Evo then being denied special liberty to make it). Some can’t make the expensive flight all the way to whereever without another reason outside of Evo(Europeans come to mind, AU and JPN aren’t as bad). Some simply flake out days before.
SO, you have situations where even if said extra games ARE set up, you’re not guaranteed results. Look at EVO2k5 for a real good example. If you saw the signup process, KOF2k2 was the most popular extra game to be voted in. However, no one put their money where their mouth was. In return, Evo didn’t add 2k2. Evo2k4, the K-Force with my assistance, tried to run a series of SNK tournies. IIRC the biggest turnout for a game was in the 30s, and this was with notice and signups months in advance. Almost 2/3rds of those that signed up never made it. We got more random Mexican walkins than signups altogether for KOF2k2. Simply booking a game is not enough.
i would like for once see at least ONE SNK game make it as part of evo preferably Garou or KOF 2003.
I think KOFXI is reasonable. It’s in arcades and is coming to console soon. My guess is that import capable ps2’s will be needed for it though.
SC3 is a decent choice, but I saw a glitch where you can block fast attacks after you have been GI’ed, killing the mixup game. SC 2 would be awesome.
GG #R is a game I do not feel we have seen enough of. Evo has not used japanese consoles in the past, we would do well not to expect this for slash.
As long as 3s, CVS2, Marvel, T5 and GG #R are featured, I’ll be pretty satisfied. Halo had better take a backseat because this is a fighting game tourny, and mlg using all those tvs really sucked.
