KOF XI is out June 22nd for PS2.
cyeberbots, waku waku 7, and battle arena toshinden.
Is hoping for Melty Blood : Act Cadenza too much ;p?
I really think that Mark of the wolfs garoua should be in their its a really balance game and could be realized of it potential
Might as well suggest it:
Naruto 4 for GC. Or 5 if it’s out by then. But yeah.
Although I like the concept of team tournaments, I don’t think they’re a good idea for Evo. In Japan, where it’s easy to meet and develop relationships with other players, it’s probably not too difficult to build a team. Here, where a lot of people don’t even have comp to play against, I suspect that finding a team would be a lot more difficult. I think team tournaments would ultimately decrease turnout, because new and/or isolated players won’t be able to find a team and will end up giving up on showing.
Maybe one team tournament in a popular game, or a game that’s being phased out? MvC2, CvS2, and 3S all seem like they have a playerbase that could support a small team tournament.
My suggested lineup:
- MvC2 (For all the talk of this game being played out or dead, it seems to be a perennial favorite. Perhaps Duc Do’s win last year put that talk to rest?)
- 3S (A very popular game, also a steady favorite.)
- CvS2 (Another sure draw.)
- HSF: AE (ST is the better game, no two ways about it. However, the regrettable fact is that there seem to be no good console options for ST. Furthermore, I suspect that most ST players anymore are playing and practicing on HSF:AE. As for the game being glitchy and flawed–most fighting games have some problems. HSF: AE’s are, I think, mostly known, so it’s not like the glitches are any less fair than those in MvC2. In the end, “the scene” seems to have moved on from ST to this, and Evo ought to follow suit in order to maximize interest.)
- GGXX/ (I suspect that the vast majority of GG players know what the changes are from #R, have seen the match videos, and either are playing Slash at local arcades or are planning to import it at first opportunity. Again, the scene has moved on, and Evo will maximize interest by doing the same.)
- Team tournament: Either MvC2, CvS2, or 3S. (Pleases those who like team tournaments, but allows those who don’t like them or can’t find a team to join the singles tourney.)
Other games that would be cool, depending on how many tournaments it’s possible to run:
- SSBM (Popular, widely played, already has a tournament scene.)
- T5/DR (Widely played, already has a tournament scene, but is it still popular?)
Games that I think won’t be able to put forward enough players:
KoF (any version): Don’t get me wrong, I love the series and played 2k3 seriously. However, the difficulty just in finding matches online (not to mention terrible sales of the XBX 2k2/2k3 pack) suggests to me that these games just can’t get enough turnout. I suspect that KoFXI is drawing from the same limited playerbase as the previous KoF games.
NGBC: This game is super fun and I enjoy it a lot. Big cast, lots of characters who can compete, you name it. Unfortunately, it seems to have gotten lost in the shuffle; the people who play SNK games at all moved on swiftly to KoFXI.
VF4/Evo/FT/5: Awesome, awesome games, but again, I’m not sure they have a following that will travel. VF4:Evo was at past Evos, wasn’t it? How did it do?
HALO!!!.. hehe just kidding
Seriously though, people keep shouting out games a lot of people have never even heard of.
To be seriously considered, it has to already be widely known. Even though EVO is console only, it should preferrably already be in arcades, well SC3 might be an exception to that. There has to be a ready large scene for it…
On top of that, it definitely can’t be an japan import region only game like a few here are listing…
vf4e had a low turnout, which is sad. I think once vf5 comes out we’ll see a better turnout cuz it’ll be brand new.
Armored core would be a blast also, but each match is like 5 min at least. Are there even big tourneys for that game anymore? What’s their main scene website anyway?
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. The forgotten classic. This game NEEDS some love. Where’s Adam Warlock, he’d back me up.
You mean forums?
The only one that is active is http://www.armoredcoreonline.com/acforums/index.php?act=idx
People still post in these but not as active as it use to be:

There isn’t a big following but we do travel. There’s a tourney going on this weekend in SoCal; me and 2 guys from NYC are going as well as guys from Boston, Chicago, San Fran, Philly, Columbus and even one from Australia!
There was no VF at Evo last year because the biggest scenes in NA had imported FT and didnt feel like travelling to play Evo. Plus, FT was and still is arcade only and would’ve been a real hassle to setup. VF5 is due to hit arcades in Japan in July and kits available in August so thats out of the picture.
If I make it Evo this year, I plan to hold an unofficial VF tourney. VF4:Evo most likely. :karate:
I can’t get into all of the banned parts and other rules that go into their tourneys. Since I’m not into AC like I used to be, I won’t pass judgement too quickly. The scene seems really stratified. After checking out everything it makes me appreciate what srk does for the scene for all the shit and complaints they get. An Evo-like event for AC would be sick though; AC’s getting busted on a huge projector would be orgasmic.
I think it will get better once full featured online play is available. The fact that it never really happened pissed me off about the ps2, and shows how M$ is on top of gaming trends. But that’s a tangent I don’t feel like exploring now.
On another note it seems like the features in Last Raven show that From Software cares about fans unlike capcom does.
I’ve been saying this for 3 years now, it’s not that ARMORED CORE needs EVO, EVO needs ARMORED CORE as one of its games, this game plays so much like a fighting game/ FPS, the huge fan base (not to mention most of it lives in California) C’mon it’s just about time ARMORED CORE makes into EVO, it almost be a SIN if it didn’t make this year.
Btw, we have had online play since Armored Core Nexus came out, we play via Kai Networks.
Not if but when you add ARMORED CORE to the next EVO, let it be ARMORED CORE NINEBREAKER or the upcoming title ARMORED CORE LAST RAVEN, the latter being a bit more balanced with the usual few weapon and part bans.
ARMORED CORE for EVO would even attrack some Japanese and Korean player as well as every Armored Core fan and their mothers, ARMORED CORE for EVO … needs to happen!
THese are games that should be added to the Defaut list
SC2 shoud be there SC3 is still unbalanced, unless u the Jap Ver
GarouMotw- Wheres the SNK games, Motw is way better that GG "Yes i said that’
SSBM- Try something new manly for Team Touney
Alpha 3- Why not
Heres 1 that would never be there an Xboxlive tourney, for the people who cant make it to cali
i agree they need to get some tekken 5 dr machines in that bitch and just charge extra for tekken.
I would be willing to pay extra for DR.
The Alpha Collection comes out. I would love to see Alpha 3!
I’ve never been to Evo yet but I will not consider unless there is a:
Street Fighter EX2+ National at Evloution!
Too many underground players for it not to be done!
Im very serious about this too!
N64 smash bros is not only a bad game, it’s more broken than mvc2, and not in a good way.
SSBM however would be a great addition to evo.
Also, to people saying SSBM is “kiddy” or “noob-bait” (Easy to play), you really have no idea what you’re talking about.
Around the start of tourney play in any street fighter game you have to be able to do any combo your characters can do and know when to use them, the games seem to be more about strategy than anything else (Some exceptions to the combo rule apply, like gineijin, comboes that are differant every time you do em). So as you progress in the tournaments of a 2d fighter, you’re becoming better with mixup games, parrying (in 3s/cvs2), character to character strategy and perhaps some really hard stuff that only the pros pull of constantly.
It’s completely differant in SSBM. The end-game is a complete mix of mindgames and advanced tactics that are in no way easy to pull off.
The best character in high level play is probably Fox, and what puts him there are his infinite combos and good ko potential. To do the BASIC shine combo, you first need to learn to wavedash. Wavedashing is probably harder than any other basic skill in a street fighter game that everyone needs to do (Karathrowing, parrying, etc). You have to get the timing down jumping and cancelling the jump with an air-dash into the ground either in front or behind you. When it becomes second nature it’s a third way of getting around, besides normal movement and jumping.
Then, to do the BASIC shine combo, you jump, air-dash into the ground, use fox’s shine reflector (Down-B), jump, airdash and repeat. Easy to say, pretty hard to master. If you can do it right you can take about half the cast off most levels and spike them downwards. Then, once you can do the masic shine combo, you can fill in drill-kicking. To drill kick with the shine you must master ANOTHER advanced technique which itself is a combination of 3 other techniques, shuffling.
Shuffle is essencially Shorthop- Fastfall- L Cancel. Being, you short-hop by pressing down on jump lightly, use the move, fast-fall (Fall down quickly, so you strike them the second before you hit the ground), and then L-Cancel the move so you reduce its lag. You shuffle the drill kicks into the shine combo.
So drill-shining is done like this. Short-hop (Must be short, hard to do with fox), Use drill-kick (Down-A in the air), Fast-fall at the right moment, L-cancel at the right moment, Shine (Down-B), repeat. I may have gotten something wrong in there as I certainly can’t do that, but that’s the gist of it. It’s ridiculously hard, I’d wager it’s much harder than doing mvc2 infinite combos simply because of the touch-sensative nature of the controls when you short-hop, along with having to navigate the stick right (You try to ‘perfect wavedash,’ wavedashing the max horizontal distance while doing the combo).
And that’s just one combo for one character. Fox also has quite a bit else he has to master.
There are extremely hard techniques in smash brothers that incorporate all aspects of difficulty, spacing, timing, direction, everything. In fact, most combos you have to make up in the middle of the match to keep up with your oponent. You have to deal with everything they do to defend themselves as well. It’s alot more complicated than just blocking and parrying.
For example, Samus’ Super Wavedash. You have to do 3 commands (back, forward, neutral) in literally 1/20th of a second, perfectly timed after bombing.
Just so you get an idea, here is Smashboards list of smash terms, the basic ones.
Alot. Alot more than any of you would think of or give credit to smash brothers. Just know what you’re talking about before you talk trash. It’s not noob bait, you’d sooner win a street fighter tournament using scrub tactics than a smash brothers one.
Also, nearly all of smash brothers methods of attack can somehow be used for defense, and vis versa. Perfect example being shield-grabbing. If they come to close to you when you’re shielding and they hit you, once you block the hit you can grab them during the lag of their attack and throw them wherever.
The key differance between smash brothers and 2d fighters is the method of play. In street fighter you need to master combos, setups and situations, most of which you can do in training mode. Once you got it, you move on to something else, and work on applying it in a match. In smash brothers it’s similar, but there’s really nothing you can practice by yourself because the tactics need to be constantly modified for your oponent. If Yun were in smash brothers there would be 5 differant ways to get out of a gineijin combo, and yun would have to anticipate and react to the oponents actions. Whether they block, tech, wavedash, roll or go offensive you gotta know what to do.
Smash brothers is certainly differant, but it’s not crap and it’s not noob.
It’d be pretty interesting to see a USAvJapan A2 tourney at Evo. With the Anthology coming out pretty soon its probable some might pick the game up again just for old time sake and with John Choi,Alex Valle, and Cole still playing now it would be pretty cool to see the Japanese fight against in the US in A2. There’s “some” debate over whether the US or the Japanese understand the game more than another so what better way to see it than at Evo? Or at least at some side tourney in the area and it could be put on the DVD? Sirlin’s Rose Vs Ohnuki’ Chun would be pretty interesting to say the least.
