this is about fighting games in general…mostly about MVC2.
What 2-d fighter requires the highest level of techinical ability to play at top level?
I guess my first guess is MVC2… i dont know. At least…the game engine allows for alot of creativity in how the characters can be moved as oppossed to a lot of other games. That is main reason i play this game is because it is seemingly unlimited.
on the subject of Marvel, What are your thoughts on what matches 3 years from now will look like. Will a lot more players play like Wong does now…and then there will be another level? what are your thoughts on the technical limits?
I seem to get stuck in habits when i play too much. If i take a break for a few days, I ussually get better that way. thoughts?
Most of the major games have their parts that require a lot of technical skill.
Marvel I would say has the most, but that’s my opinion. 3rd strike has parrying, which can take a lot or a little depending on what it is, and CvS2 has RC, which I can do almost never, so I’m not sure if it gets easier.
Guilty gear has lots of options in how combos branch, especially with RC/FRC. Tekken has… I don’t know, as I never played it, but it has something that someone here will tell you. SC3 has the crazy canceling things that leads to infinites and breaks shit.
If you want to see what matches will look like 3 years from now, track down some matches that are 3 years old. A lot changes. If you go back further you will even see changes in the top tier. There were days before mags, with blackheart and others, but that was before my time.
definitely new limits are being developed
i mean look at magnetro2k and his dhalsim dvd
im hoping on seeing a bunch of dhalsims at evo2k7
new assists, teams, and point characters are being chosen and breaking the mold.
as for most technical 2-d fighter?
guilty gear hands down.
I can get into a virtua fighter game as a complete noob and beat a pro a couple times just by button mashing, in MvC 2 a noob couldn’t even come close to getting 3 hits on a pro… just my 2cents.
This guy might think it is, but it isn’t. It’s about which takes the most skill to play. Guilty Gear’s combo system is simple, FRC timing might be a bitch, but it’s nothing compared to Marvel. It doesn’t have rigerous button presses required at lightning speed, sure it might be mildly complex but it isn’t that hard to play.
I played Sol Badguy for three months and I got to a pretty decent competetive level of play… I’ve been playing Marvel for a month and I can’t even ROM yet. So much more effort is needed for Marvel, both in terms of practice and propper play.
vf annoys me greatly, but i can see where the game takes the cake as being the most technical 3d game. light dashing, wave dashing, cc, and ewgf, can be a bit of a task to master for tekken players, and takes some skill to pull off. well at least the light dashing and wave dashing, and ewgf on the 1p side for hei, and dj can be a bit more of a task then on the 2p side. if your playin on a stick, but other than that. play is still pretty much basic. its only stuff like hayashida steppin, ssc, ld, and wd’in, that make tekken that much more technical, but its not a necessity. especially since most of the cast cant wd, ld, or hayashida step, or do ewgf. so um, whatever.
2d=probably marvel. on high level play, its just crazy. i remember when i used to play it, and doin those insane magneto combos(which are pretty basic staple joints now) had me putting forth alot of work. never really played guilty gear, so i cant say much about it. hnk on high level play looks like it takes a great deal of skill to pull off what those japanese kids are doin nowadays.
marvel vs capcom 2 and hnk (because i love it) are my nominations for games that take a great deal of technical skill to play against the pros.
this is comin from an arcade stick palyers point of view also. if that makes any difference to the debate.
Yeah I know Sol’s a pretty bad example, but it still shows what can be achieved. I was actually trying to differenciate the combo system from FRC timing, I-No takes a lot of skill with her FRC timings, but she can still be used without them. Marvel on the other hand simply can’t be played unless a wall has been jumped straight of the bat. HnK more resembles MvC2 compared to Guilty Gear and from what I’ve learned it still doesn’t take as much effort.
