What do you think we can do to improve GD?

There should be a general gaming forum and a general discussion forum.

The fact that GD hast post limits enforced while other GAME specific forums don’t have it for threads that aren’t even related to those forums in the slightest don’t goes to show what is wrong with this site. It’s the typical LCD pandering that has been going on for these past years and it’s only motivation is to make some people money instead of improving the community overall.

I say take the bs limits off of GD but enforce actual rules like infracting for the whole quoting with barely any text and random image spam ACROSS the board. That is why we have IMM and a Video forum. Stop posting in video threads that only have shitty youtube links because you are helping to proliferate bad posting habits and general laziness.

Oh man Huggy Bear just made me laugh quite loudly, thank you.

If it ain’t broken, why fix it??? Besides, GD isn’t the main focus of the SRK forums, the fighting section is. For all i’m concerned, GD is simply “misc.” where people talk about non-fighting game topics.

FGD hasn’t aged well at all over the years, if anything a thread like this is probably needed over there moreso than here.

I agree with less super threads, but GD doesn’t seem active enough to maintain smaller threads.

This is what rep brought us:

I think it’s fine the way it is.

Close all OTT threads, and let GD become a warzone for a bit. It will at least be fun.

No it won’t…

If anything, post the wrong thing and you get your head bitten off.

what’s there to improve

the most we can do is shut the dumb threads down, it’s not like if we do that there’s gonna be “more intelligent” discussion or an influx of posters

we’ve tried the lawless stuff

we’ve tried the nazi stuff (then sf4 happened and I got told to “calm down” :coffee:)

we’ve tried the “happy medium”

the fuck do you want me to do, hold these niggas hands while they post so they have a memorable experience? niggas got the fucking tools to get preppy and me to “fix” things

I don’t have the free time or motivation to sit here and read every retarded thread or post like I did in '05. We have a sticky explaining wtf they need to do. If they need more than that they need to fucking man up or move on

as for the individual OTTs in the individual game subforums, they could all burn in hell as far as I care as long as they keep the fuck away from FGD

I’m not talking about the modding in that section. I think FGD is covered as far as modding goes, but you and I both know noobs aren’t going to read the stickies. Like you said, it’s either man up or move on.

The fighting game community is less tight knit. Srk has stricter moderation in order to keep its sheets clean. And a lot of us have grown up and away from posting a lot.

I used to be on top of every viral video etc because people would make individual threads in gd. When vid threads were banned outside some sub forum I never go to I felt gd lost a bit of its spark. Sometimes I browse the misc on bodybuilding.com because that place has like zero moderation, this place seems a bit enforced, I don’t know why or even if it is over enforced, it’s just the feeling I got after sf4 hit. Will I get I infracted for calling someone a faggot for example?

Only if you post outside GD. Not because the mods care, but because the soft ass dudes outside of gd will be pressing the report button before you have a chance to f5 that shit to see some witty comeback that will never happen.

What are we trying to accomplish here? Are we trying to have SRK be 4chan, or are we trying to have SRK be … SRK?

I’d argue that if Sanford wants to call people names and drop knowledge, we probably should stand back and let him blast. I’d argue that if some random Johnny Donuts wants to call people names without having contributed, he’s just stinking up the place and should be politely shot. Elitist/meritocracy? Hell yes.

I’d also argue that the GD OTT is generally detrimental to SRK at this point. That’s EXCELLENT that OGs have a place to hang out, but I think it encourages fucked up behavior from people that have lost their interest in gaming that discourages people who ARE still interested in gaming. If you’re interested in “some witty comeback”, what the fuck are you doing on SRK versus some joke/troll site?

I think people are all ears on what can be done to improve things. Clearly letting GD foster trolls that attack other forums isn’t a smart plan.

Just for the record, the Skullgirls section no longer has an OTT section, and hasn’t for a few weeks. It was suddenly deleted without warning, and when I asked about it I was told that OTT threads don’t belong in that section because people are talking about stuff that isn’t Skullgirls. It was made pretty clear that threads like that don’t belong on SRK, which confused the hell out of me because the UMvC3 OTT was staring me right there in the face.

The result of not having an OTT is that the SG section is now very boring, and less people post there. There doesn’t seem to be this feeling of community that we once had, where people just knew everyone. I’ve tried encouraging people to go to GD, and some have, but overall the sense of closeness we had has completely disappeared.

Something I’ve learned over the past few weeks is that communities build themselves. Trying to forcefully guide it in one direction or another leads to stagnation or discontent. It’s been made pretty clear to me on both sides that people in the OTT threads don’t want to post in GD, and GD posters (some, not all) don’t want them coming into GD without some sort of leash on them.

People bitch about things getting worse and wanting things to go back to the way they were, but hindsight is always 20/20. I’m sure if the posts were archived, that we could find plenty of posts from people bitching about new members in 2003 and wishing they could go back to alt.games.sf2, or something.

do you feel the site is better if people only talk about fighting games and not reveal other areas of their personality?

That does not seem to correlate with what I said, which was more akin to:

  • The site is better if people are contributing to the community in some fashion rather than just being acerbic/destructive.
I love OT threads in the area forums. The PNW “Get To Know a Negro Better” was legendary in terms of helping build/grow the PNW scene, IMHO. I just think the GD OT thread has been particularly noxious for a while. Commit to some sort of gaming connection, peoples. As long as you can avoid it devolving into memes/random images/random vids (this is important) or even worse “Let’s Attack People Who Are Different Than Us”, I personally think OT “Get To Know Each Other Better” threads are very high value. But SRK staff/supermods decide those things anyways.

Plus nobody cares what I think. This is your site, not mine. I’m a junior member of this community. If I can help, that’s awesome, but PM me or anybody else when I or anyone else is being a tool.

To just call GD a retirement home isn’t fair or accurate. I’m pretty sure (I know for a fact) that plenty of GDers are still into FGs and are still in competitive shape. It’s just that a lot of ‘us’ don’t get along with ‘you–’ and not for a lack of trying.

I keep reading “for the community!” chants from this stranger pimping his website and that stranger pimping his products, to the point that the word ‘community’ means something totally different than it did when SRK first went live. Then there’s the attitude that you have towards this neck of the woods, that’s shared by other mods and passed down to noobs who don’t know any better. And a bunch of other factors that’s divided this place… some of it’s existed for years but has never been fixed or addressed.

So what are us GD guys still doing here? Playing fighting games, or doing other things related to FGs, since it’s a fighting game site. We just don’t-- or can’t-- play with ‘you’ for the most part. I can go to tournaments or other gatherings, but I’m not sure that I would be* invited* to them. That’s how fragmented this site’s become before our eyes… which is normally okay, except when it’s a site that’s so big on being community-oriented.

EDIT: t9 typos
