I don’t even see GD as that insular. There’s been quite a few people that joined in the dark years (09 to present) who have become regular contributors/posters. I don’t see any improvements on the horizon from dumping OT/lounge threads and I don’t even post in them. Did the anime thread need a boost hence the SG OT thread closure? :clapdos:
this isn’t related to GD, but can someone disable comments on front page articles? shit is seriously like a bastardized version of eventhubs.
I strongly oppose any innuendo, whether intended or not, that people who used to play games actively but don’t anymore (or people whose participation has tapered off) are worth less to SRK than the current generation of players who buy today’s games.
I understand that Capcom has a hand in the community now, which is probably why I’ve come to see this mindset (again, intentional or unintentional) as a worrying sign of the influence of crass capitalism. If SRK ever begins to cater specifically to people who purchase the latest and greatest games while marginalizing those who paid their share to Capcom in those essential days of the 1990s/early 2000s, then I’m sure SRK will make money, but it will lose its soul.
If people who didn’t buy SF4 and subsequent games choose to migrate into GD, where they can keep up friendly contact with other people who have been here since the previous time, I cannot understand anybody having a problem with that–unless the site is really becoming what I’ve described.
Fuck no, nobody’s saying that. But the random noobs are the next generation, so the mindset of some knuckleheads in GD that they are better than the rest of SRK and that they should attack the rest of SRK: that’s the gross part.
As mentioned, it’s the other way around: people from GD have gone out of their way to attack other SRK forums. I know of nobody who has gone into GD to be a dbag. I hope y’all banned the fuck out of them if that happened. It’s all the same site at the end of the day.
I’m following up on this via PMs. Feel free to also engage in PMs upon this subject. That part of the discussion is gross and avoidable.
Less D3V…thanks
yeah, the Tech Talk was easy to troll before D3V got moderating powers. now i cant even go in there and post a picture of a smiling black man w/o getting a 10 day ban.
my very first foray into GD was an argument/flame war with jinsogood (aka philth).
i’ve been coming here ever since.
i see a lot of really ridiculous modding on other forums i post on, so it’s nice to come in here and see a little salt now and then.
Other than making a thread about fighting games, how the fuck do you have an “off topic” thread in** General Discussion**? What a dumbass premise.
If people want to talk about SG in the SG forum then nothing is preventing them from doing that. If it is boring there than I would blame the whole premises that is the SG forum itself, not the lack of what amounts to a spam thread that could easily be recreated here in GD. Bottom line is that all that random crap that is post in these threads are already on GD and can be participated in. People only want to post in these other forums because they feel protected by those that feel the need to coddle them. Better moderation in GD to help reduce spam and closure of these redundant threads in the other forums is not such a hard endeavor to undertake. Those forums will still exist if they want to talk about the actual GAMES themselves and help further each others skill. And if they want to talk about meeting up we have matchmaking/regional specific forums to do just that. I don’t understand why this shit is so hard to get now.
Maybe $rk is getting to big now and like I said before, needs more mod(qualified) to help keep it moving in the right direction.
So, I’m a dirty peasant who just joined a couple of weeks ago and I think the problem is that GD is losing its identity because of bad posters and their coddling.
1 word/picture/video replies are bad and destroy conversation, image macros just suck ass in general. Not having balls and crying to the mods because of criticisms and some flaming/jokes (It can go overboard and is sometimes uncalled for, but it’s not all that bad) is also bad, as stricter rules means less fun and that GD becomes more of like other forums, which old posters obviously don’t want.
And the war between newer users and older users is what causes all that. Since older users don’t tolerate that and new users do it and that creates more fights and stricter stuff until the point that this might become another 4chan/Reddit/GameFAQs and serious conversations and fun can’t be had due to stricter rules and dumber replies.
I don’t think it’s really a war on join dates, it’s more of a war on post quality and most of the “enemy” seems to fit in that group of join dates, so naturally generalizations are made and more people get salty and more shit is thrown.
And even though I’ve only visited this place for a very small amount of time and posted on it for even less, it’s all that stuff that the older posters appreciate that makes me come to GD instead of the OTT’s of game sub-forums or other websites, even if I’ve missed out on a lot of specific things, the general attitude and atmosphere of this place is still great. I don’t care if I get flamed initially, cos I can get over that shit and it’s worth it in the end. I think some people have just lost the concept of earning respect and fitting in with a certain culture.
What can be done to fix it?: Further enforce the rules against 1-word/picture/video replies and just encourage newer people to get with the culture of the place if they want to get involved and that they’re also gonna need to grow a pair and deal with some flaming.
But once again, '12 peasant. I don’t have an opinion, don’t listen to me.
And here we have a new member who most of the older members on the board would definitely appreciate.
I couldn’t agree more. Why should we have to dumb the standard down for new members who come into GD when the quality of posters most people are when coming to GD isn’t that great? Something needs to be done to toughen them up, or bring them up to standard. Most of all of us pre-09 members had to go through it, so why can’t anyone else?
Just out of curiosity, what prompted this? A general sense that it’s boring in here these days?
I’ve been a lot less active in GD so I don’t really know the latest trends. All I know is that it’s become a lot more cute and cuddly over the past few years, for better or worse.
Remember when we first started the Lounge threads? I remember the first couple versions. The idea was to create a space for people to talk about random topics without creating upmteen numbers of new threads. The super threads seem to serve a similar purpose and seem fine to me.
You’re right about people confining themselves to specific threads though. A lot of the OG posters retired to the Lounge or the Late Night threads because that’s where people congregate. And we aren’t up to our old Kobra Kai shenanigans anymore, probably because we’re just getting old. A core group of us used to roam around and actively engage with people and contribute in random threads.
Improving GD isn’t something we can quantify. It’s less about the structure of the threads or the number of stickies. It’s the good posters who make this place. If we could force the old posters to come back that would instantly improve things quality-wise, but we can’t make them visit GD.
Actually, as I’m looking at the threads currently on the front page, I’m realizing why people are confined to specific threads in GD:
Young Justice
Diablo 3
Women of Walmart
Wrestling Thread
Lounge
MMA Thread
Castlevania Thread
President Obama is making people gay?
Playstation 3 Thread
Superman vs Elites
R&B and Slow Jams Thread
Rap Thread
NBA Thread
Claymore Thread
Weightlifting and Nutrition Thread
Boxing Thread
Call of Duty Thread
Florida couple murders young girl…
Cooking Thread
video of man who shot dead neighbor over loud music…
Pretty much every thread on here is dedicated to some specific interest. That’s why it probably feels stale in here to some people. What’s there to branch out to?
Every title is: “[BIG GENERAL TOPIC OF INTEREST] + Thread”, and that’s fine I guess, but it doesn’t give people many options to contribute unless they’re interested in that specific thing. Sure, those type of threads technically belong in General Discussion, but most of those can’t be discussed generally. Like, if I’m not into wrestling, there’s no reason for me to post in there. In fact, the Lounge thread has become the defacto General Discussion precisely because it’s the one place where people discuss general things. We created a monster, I think.
The difference between now and 6-7 years ago is that we had a LOT more of the types of threads that are in bold. Heh, remember the Toddler Drowns in Septic Tank thread and all the shit it caused? (pun, I know) It sparked a huge debate about making puns in news threads. We fought for pages about it, and everyone got in on it regardless of where they stood on the issue. We need more topics like that.
also, don’t forget about versus/tier threads, the flame/battle poll and women tourneys…
You made it seem like GD was multiple lounge threads, which sounds fucking incredible.
These being spaced far enough apart made it so that it never felt boring. Shame people (myself included) stopped participating in them.
That’s what I’ve been getting at but probably didn’t say too well. There was a lot more interaction back in the day, whether it was friendly (not too common) or it was complete battle royale (common). Thread discussion was 50% about the topic and 50% about who was posting. This site’s grown a lot so it’s never returning to the way it was, but I’m not convinced the old days are gone 100%.
Also: this exact thread is proof of what’s been missing most this board. The topic could have easily been made in the Mods Suggestion Thread, where it ‘belongs,’ but it wouldn’t have been a lightning rod for GD vets and mods from other boards, because nobody would’ve noticed it.
I don’t want to come across as insulting or highbrow: I used to browse GD often years ago, but as I got older and more mature, I couldn’t take the forum anymore. I really wish there was more stringent modding - but not just across GD, but across the general forum. Lazy opinions and blatant disrespect of other members should not be tolerated. Neogaf is a good model - though they can be extreme at times. A lot of intelligent discussion happens there because insulting others is just not tolerated there.
Just saw the thread and decided to post a quick opinion regarding the forum as a whole and how I see it today.

seriously, the last thing this place needs is to become PC. There has also been several threads with healthy exchanges going back and forth. What this place need’s is for all the OTT poster’s from other sub forum’s to start posting here and leave all their weeboo shit over there.
As I’ve gotten older and more mature (pointing out how mature one has become is a sign of authentic maturity, right?), I’ve grown to appreciate this place as a valuable and increasingly rare outlet for geek talk and silly shenanigans, populated by people who can get along just fine without heavy-handed chaperoning.
So you want them all to come over here, but then they can’t post what they want or enjoy.
Meanwhile, people in GD should be able to post what they want.
Sounds like hypocrisy to me.
