What did Capcom and SNK bring to the fighting game genre?

what was the first game to have air hitstun style combo system (ala GG) where if you are in the air an attack does actual hitstun and you can tech/begin to block as soon as your hitstun ends (but you can choose to remain IN hitstun by not teching)?

oh yeah SNK introduced Counter Moves. Geese,Kasumi and Jubei all have moves that counter an opponents attack.

It is good! Give it atry!

Wow FFS beat by 1 mere month MK II! MK II had air specials galore! (kitana, liu kang, rayden, scorp, mileena, etc), and wasnt TMNT TF the very first game with a SUPER gauge? It fills by certain conditions and its entirely dedicated to that SUPER move, it was firt by far any other fighting game I think. Correct me if im wrong please.

You shouldn’t confuse the Spirit meter with a super meter, but AoF1 had the first ‘supers,’ or devastating attacks that were unlocked under certain match conditions (in AoF’s case, low health+full meter).

I LOL’d. Well played , sir.

SNK introduced ranbu supers

actually wait was the ryuko ranbu in AoF before TMNT’s mikey’s super? i guess that would be the first cases of ranbu

FHD has an unblockable and it came out in 94. Though wouldn’t Guile’s invisible throw be considered an unblockable from SF2:WW? I believe Capcom introduced custom combos but I could be wrong on that.

A2: proximity blocking, air blocking

Airblocking was waaay before Alpha 2.

Darkstalkers
XMEN COTA
Marvel Super Heroes
Alpha 1

were all out before then.

Looks like the turtles got this one.

Aof was released nearly a year before tmnttf.

That’s true. It first came in FF1, as Geese could counter you. However, I don’t know if it wasn’t triggered automatically by the CPU bss rather than being an actual “move”.

SFA3, maybe? I really don’t know.

SFA3, surely. Guard break was existant since KoF '96, however.

Like I said, nor CAPCOM nor SNK, but KONAMI invented the super bar. Haow-ken can’t be considered a super, nor does AoF’s spirit gauge can be considered a super meter.

A throw is technically unblockable, is it not? Also what does FHD stand for, I can’t know every game out there.

So which one was 1st?

Also, I’m going to credit both companies for introducing a new mechanics if the two games were introduced within a reasonable time period of each other (maybe about 4-5 months max).

Fighter’s History Dynamite.

What game had the first taunts and power up taunts?

Aof was the first game I saw taunts in. After that, it kinda became an snk standard, with Tmnt tf (snes version, of course) joining in, then Capcom games doing it later with msh and sf zero/alpha.

Darkstalkers - '94 (not sure which month, but I’m SURE that it came out before December)
COTA - December '94
Alpha 1 - June '95
MSH - October '95

Yes throws are unblockable. I guess it should have been worded as unblockable special move then.

But that’s the thing. Its not a “special move”; its a universal command available to every character.

Save for the mummy in VS.

AOF - Damage over time sprites? i.e. face and clothes
SNK - SNK boss syndrome - very hard/cheap bosses?
SS1 - Animals as weapons?

And even before that AoF had the Ryuko Ranbu which was unblockable IIRC, so would that count as the first unblockable special move?

Gief then in WW. Special command grab AKA Spinning Pile Driver. Unblockable special.
