Off the subject but:
Speaking of which, too bad MSvsSF MechAkuma, was not in MVC2. His power/ability would have fit right in there(toned down a bit of coarse).

I was always under the impression that a “nerfed” character would be objectively bad in their later incarnation. Yang and Akuma are both good in 3S (upper mid), they’re just not busted like in 2nd. Their changes are not in the same league as to what happened to Sean.
Yeah…Akuma, Ibuki, and Yang kinda needed to be toned down from 2I to make a more balanced game.
Akuma and Yang were nerfed, but they’re still Upper Tier in 3S. Which tells you how overpowered they were in 2I.
They might have gone a little bit too far for with Ibuki, but she’s still playable.
There’s no excuse for what they did to Sean. Especially since it was intentional.
Yeah pretty much any top tier in one game over-nerfed BECAUSE they were the top character.
T4 Jin -> T5 Jin
CvS1 Nakoruru -> CvS2 Nakoruru
MvC1 Chun -> MvC2 Chun, even if they didnt tone her down, she STILL wouldnt have really been THAT great compared to the power characters.
Though SC2 Talim to SC3 Talim still gets the WTF factor from me.
To Lei players: He’s actually decent in DR, and ive seen plenty of peeps here that do mad crazy stuff with him and do well. DR is so well balanced that Lei isnt in the craphole like he used to be in 5.0. T4 doesnt count cause everyone pretty much sucked cept a few characters. TTT, well, TTT is mad unbalanced too, sadly. But yeah, have faith in DR, though. ^_^;
And as for Steve/Bryan/Nina from 5.0 to DR. Its not that they were completely nerfed, but they were just brought to the same level as the other characters. Nerfed, while it generally implies that the character was toned down, i think in this context, you have to remember the game. They’re all usable still, and they all have their fair share of usable moves still, its just that theyre not broken and stupid easy to win with like it used to be in 5.0. Its not like Sean from DI to 3S, where they put him in the crapper, it would be more like if they made a 4th strike, toned down chun, yun, ken, makoto and toned up sean, q, 12, etc and made it way more balanced. I wouldnt consider it a nerf as much as just normal game to game progress. Characters that are too good kinda need to be made not AS good, but it doesnt mean that theyre gonna strip everything away. And that’s definitely not the case with the DR characters. And thats not to say it didnt happen, like in DOA4, where Bass was the best in 3.1, and is one of the worst in 4.
And yeah, of course, there’s pointless ones, like the Robo-Ky example, so yeah…
I definitely had those 3 in mind. Weaker throws plus the inability to combo from 0 to death + a bunch of other nerfs makes them practically unusable at high level play.
I thought Daigo got second at sbo3 with urien.
urien is far from nerfed in cfe.
no unblockables. That’s nerfed enough or an Aegis that pushes the opponent out. Yeah…NERFED!
Dude lol name the last urien to get second at 3s in even a regional tournament.
'02 Whip --> '03 Whip
Bah.
02 Athena --> 03 Athena
Pikachu, Kirby, and Ness SSB -> SSBM
Ibuki 2I -> 3s
Talim SC2 -> SC3 (not that anybody cares about SC3, but it was just too obvious)
If anyone ever played the Last Blade games, LB1 Yuki -> LB2 Yuki.
SFA1 Guy -> SFA2 Guy
Tekken Tag Kazuya -> Tekken 4 Kazuya
I can only speak of characters I use so, I don’t know about biggest nerfs just disappointments.
Akuma: 2nd Impact to 3rd Strike
Kazuya: Tekken 2 to Tekken 3…mother fucker wasn’t even in the game
Alot of these are exactly what I was wondering about. Thanks for the replies guys. Looking at the thread it seems that game devs just don’t like it when unorthodox characters reach a certain level of effectiveness (Lei, Whip, etc).
I wanted to put this one in my original post, but not too many people here talk about the DOA series.
What happened to Bass is arguably the worst nerf of all time. Heavyweights already have it hard in DoA 4. It sucks being slow in a game that’s all about speed, speed and more speed. Leon and Bayman got shafted bad, but at least they’re still playable. With Bass; everything, and I do mean everything was changed for the worse. Bass ran the show in DoA 3.x. In DoA 4 he’s got all the cons that come with being a slow, power hitter and none of the pros. It’s hard to top a nerf that makes a character go from top-tier to failed concept.
3S Hugo —> SvC Hugo is another one I wanted to mention, but I left it out seeing how the two games are made by different developers. Hugo is already kind of lacking in Third Strike, but in SvC he is almost unplayable.
What was it that made Sean a joke character (canon wise as opposed to gameplay wise) out of interest?
Why are people stating 3s Akuma as ‘the biggest nerf’? What, you expected Capcom to make him better when he was already broken? WTF? As someone already stated, he’s still one of the better characters of the game.
Anyways, biggest nerfs:
Any version of Whip —> XI Whip LOL WTF
Any version of Athena —> XI Athena. I hate this character but even I was upset by SNKs shameless toning down of her
Any version of Dan —> MSF Dan
MSH Cap Am —> MvC2 Cap Am
T3 Law/Nina —> TTT Law/Nina. Again, LOL WTF
mvc1 chun to mvc2 chun was just unacceptable.
cvs1 balrog to cvs2 balrog.
they fucked up his dash punches to the point where you cant even combo it off c.lps anymore, standing hp can be ducked by majority of the cast and punch super is unsafe if blocked. he went from top 5 to the bottom 5.
xvsf charlie to mshvssf charlie
MK2 Mileena —> UMK3 Mileena (I don’t count MK3 as a game it sucked IMO)
zangief sfex1 -zangief ex2
sean second impact- sean 3rdstrike
eddie r-eddie/
dizzy and robo-ky from reload- dizzy and robo ky /
ken sfa2 -ken sfa3
