What characters did you drop in vanilla and why?

Day 1, I was trying out Doom, She-Hulk, Spider-Man, Spencer, and Dormammu. Out of those, I dropped She-Hulk (Because I hated doing her combos) and Spencer (I just don’t like the character, even if his playstyle is fun and he’s great to use). I’ve since then picked up Hsien-Ko, Thor, and Deadpool.

Day 1: Ammy/Dante/Wesker (turns out I picked an extremely godlike team)

Sentinel - When you and everyone else you play with had rock-em sock-em robot battles at the end of every match, it gets stale horrendously fast.
Hsien-Ko - It was fun when I was starting out and golden girl always made the match go your way. Unfortunately, people get smarter.
Wolverine - "Time to lab with Logan! Merp merp merp merp merp I’m done."
Akuma - I wanted to do more than ABC -> hyper in XF3.

Sticking with Spencer/Ammy/Dormammu until UMvC3. Sentinel jumps back in occasionally. BFF’s are there to troll. I’ll practice with Dante occasionally but I haven’t the time (nor the 360) anymore.

I know, I know. I just like the gong. I’m probably going to drop her come Ultimate, since Capcom’s being all stingy with the buffs.

I think it was a sensible decision.

Come now, it’s okay to like the character…

That shit is annoying when I hear people say that Wesker’s just a one dimensional braindead character. When in fact there’s actually a lot of depth to him. Between being able to switching his playstyle depending on matchups, his mixup. I’m not talking about lazy assist teleport Bullshit. And being able to utilizing his amazing set of normals properly.

In my opinion I don’t even think Wesker’s even top tier. He has a decent amount of bad match ups between Phoneix. But everyone loses to that bitch. Wolverine [free] Dante, Magneto, Zero. Between playing my friend and Flocker down here in sfl I can safely say this match up is pretty up hill. And Trish too.

I don’t see why bashing Wesker for being basic is so popular. Who cares if his combo’s aren’t hard. This is mvc3. Most character’s bnb is dirt easy to do anyway. And it’s not the character’s fault that the majority of scrubs flock to him and do abc otg bullshit and don’t actually but the time into learning him.

She-Hulk: I found her boring.
Ammy: Too tempting to use flame disc. (boringXD)
Dante: I find it difficult to do his combos on a controller.
Felicia: Too difficult/annoying to do toy touch -> dancing flash when she’s facing left.
I now use Morrigan/Tasky/Trish. Hopefully Felicia will be fun to use in UMvC3:)

My original team was Trish, Wesker, and Phoenix.

Trish: I dropped her because she more usable for zoning and her rushdown game isn’t has great as the rest of the cast.

Wesker: Popular character and everyone was using him. I wanted to use someone who’s more risky and fun so I switched him for Zero.

Phoenix: Easy win with 5 bars. Can’t use the meter in order to achieve victory for the team plus she’s to boring and flame because of the fireball spamming.

I think I probably dropped everyone at one point and time. I flip-flop way too much lol. Basically though, my history went like this:

Having played Street Fighter but never Marvel, I naturally headed straight to Ryu, where I thought I was beastly for doing LMHS LMHS OTGBEEEEAM consistently. I then started doing the missions for different characters. Now, most people use characters whose playstyles intrigue them. Not me. I started off using X-23 because I thought she was easy (didn’t look at this site at the time). I guess if all you know is LMHS MMH xx L Talon Attack, OTG Ankle Slice xx Hyper, then yeah, she is pretty easy. Then I added Spencer because I saw the video we’ve all seen of BIONIC ARM, and finally I added Dormammu because he looked beastly. You heard me. I learned Dormammu because he looked beastly.

I actually ended up keeping that team for a while, probably because I was closed-minded. I did drop X-23 quickly, because I felt like it. I really had no reason, all I knew was despite me just stumbling upon the combination, Spencer and Dorm were actually pretty good. I stopped using those two after a while, switched my teams up many times, but even today, I still use those two. Actually, my “Spencer” team is Spencer/Doom/Dorm, so that’s about where I started.

Then I added Wesker. At this point, I was reading this forum, so I knew about the DHC glitch and whatnot. I think I ordered it… Dormammu/Spencer/Wesker? Or perhaps Spencer/Dormammu/Wesker. I think that’s it. So yeah, that was the last variant of my original team before I dropped it in favor of a team with maybe the least synergy I’ve ever seen.

Hulk/Super Skrull/Spencer. I actually made it to 7th Lord with this team. I pretty much switched between this and BFFS + Sent whenever I lost. I dropped BFFS + Sent very quickly. I actually wasn’t doing very well, and I was only using the team so I could do well. I hated the team. Fail.

Then I had a brief go with Spencer/Arthur/Phoenix. Needless to say, I dropped this fast as well. Arthur is not for me. I just can’t play effectively with him at all unless it’s Gold armor Lv3 XF Arthur, and even then I fail. As for Phoenix, I just wasn’t good enough at the game to get Dark Phoenix reliably, and when I did, I did dumb stuff like naked teleports.

Also, at one point I tried Viper/Tron/Doom. I knew the combos, but I couldn’t land a hit with Viper or Tron. I was so bad

So, after everything, I made my way back around to Spencer/Skrull/Dormammu. Funny how this works, isn’t it? This is when I got tired of characters with little to no mobility and went to the opposite end of the spectrum: I started learning Magneto and Dante.

I put those two on a team with Sentinel, did horrible. I put those two on any team, did horrible. Not because they’re bad, because I’m bad. I tried isolating them on their own teams, still did bad. Coming from teams with LMHS MMHS Hyper combos (except Viper/Tron/Doom), air dash loops and Acid Rain loops were insane to me. I failed again.

THEN I learned She-Hulk and Taskmaster, and put them on a team with I don’t know who. Hardly worth their own paragraph, so I’ll move right along. Doom/Haggar/Phoenix was my strongest and second longest lasting team of all time. A whopping 90-something games with them . But I did get up to a 12-game win streak in ranked, as well as several 10-game streaks, and was able to hit 5th Lord. I dropped as soon as I hit 5th Lord though, that was my plan all along.

Since then I’ve continued to get nice streaks in ranked, but with a different team. She-Hulk/Dante/Dormammu. I find all the members interact very nicely, the assists aren’t great but dealable, and my Dante execution has improved to the point where I can actually be competitive with him. 14-game win streak the other day, turns out nobody can block Slide, lol. Sorry for choppy sentences, or if this reads as an incoherent rant; it’s 1:30am, and my creativity has left me for the night.

When I first started playing, my team way back when was
Ammy, Dante, Sentinel.

Since then, I’ve gone through so many teams to try to get one right. Because I like to be more in your face, my final team ended up becoming more of a team that I could do parings with 2 of the 3 characters no matter the situation, but people who like to zone can pretty much screw my main team over.

At the end of it all, my main team ended up becoming:

She-Hulk, Deadpool, Dormammu

Since creating that team, I have 1 other side team of Ammy, Zero, and C Viper, but that is pretty much it. Throughout the process, I have a few characters I had to drop because they weren’t just working for me. The sad part is that they are in my top characters in the game to use. They are:

Chris - Chris is just amazing to me. Block damage and everything else he can do is just amazing to me. The problem comes doing combos and a lot of other things that people can guess easily, or that once people get in real close he get wrecked, but I am learning to use my assists better to deal with that so hopefully he will help make up my 3rd team. He is apart of it right now working with She-Hulk to stop the zoners in their tracks with her and him.

Magneto - Magneto is probably my favorite character in the game. The sad part is that I can’t do his combos! I can’t master his air dashing on pad so I had to give up using or trying to. I have been trying to recently before UMVC3 so I can say I did it, but probably won’t happen. Otherwise, he is my favorite.

Dante - Can’t do repeat inputs well for Dante’s moves the way needed so sad screw it.

Viewtiful Joe - Another character I love in the game, but have a hard time getting in and landing his combos correctly (for me at least) so had to give him up. I still use him from time to time.

I believe that’s all the characters I can think of I’ve ran through in particular with Chris and Magneto being those 2 characters that have lost me this entire game it seems like. I will say though that in UMVC3 that Chris is looking real promising so really looking forward to using him. Otherwise, with the changes, I just hope Deadpool will still be fun (hence my avatar lol)

I dropped all of the characters who weren’t top tier because they weren’t top tier.

DROPPED:

-Amaterasu
-Dante
-Morrigan
-Modok
-Jill
-Sentinel
-Phoenix
-Felicia
-Hulk
-Chris
-Hsien Ko
-Wesker
-Magneto
-Wolverine
-Deadpool
-Skrull
-Tron

Whatever man.

Started Taskmaster/Trish/Hulk

Dropped Trish for Wolverine day 2 because her output was horrible and I played a lot of Wolverine in X-Men vs SF
Picked up Haggar/Deadpool/Phoenix team because unblockables make me smile
Dropped Taskmaster for Ryu because I didn’t want to use Akuma but did want free combos
Dropped Hulk for Spencer because Hulk was too slow for my brain to use as an effective achor
Dropped team altogether because it felt dirty as fuck and used shitty alt teams for a long time
Dropped Cap/Dorm/Wesker team because it was a shitty alt team
Dropped Phoenix because I felt even dirtier, even with Haggar on point

Ended Haggar/Deadpool/Amaterasu with a pocket Wolverine/Doom/Akuma team for trolling

Dropped from original team

Hsien-Ko - tried so hard and got bodied for it. Loses to everybody, it’s hard to even get gold armor on and tag out before death.
Morrigan - Good mixups, no damage, still fun to play though
Tron - I still play her from time to time, but Jump H got scoped out a couple months in and stopped working ever
Magneto - I could never do his combos online
Zero - same
Haggar - godly assist but the worst anchor in Marvel history
Sentinel - dropped because I thought he was too simple, then ended up coming back to him when I realized he can be played without the derp
She-Hulk - without Tron assist I had trouble getting in, she still got me a lot of wins I just lost interest

Settled on Task/Sentinel/Skrull with varying orders

I originally played Spidey/task/haggar(I think, that was forever ago)
I dropped spidey because I couldnt be consistent with him(hadnt gone to the internet for help yet)
I played a bunch of people in between but landed on X23 finally. So then I had X23/Task/Haggar but as much as I loved Haggar, I thought his assist was making playing the team too dull. So eventually I dropped him:crybaby: and was in “I need a 3rd character limbo” and played a bunch of people. Eventually I landed on Hulk/X23/Task and that has been my go to team for a while. I have also been playing Team Honzo(Task/Ammy/Doom) but Im not great with Doom and even worse with the dog.

My day 1 team was X-23/Wesker/Dante, since I liked them the most from their original media, but not having my own copy of the game kind of prevented me from putting in the time and effort necessary to get good with Dante and X-23. I ended up keeping Wesker and picking up Taskmaster and Dormammu, and that’s the main team I use today. I really want to go back to X-23 in Ultimate though, since I’ll actually have a copy of the game this time.

Haha, u mad cause your character is braindead and you don’t wanna admit it?
Right down from his combos to his mixups to his matchups to his lvl 3 XF to his airgrab to his ability to tank, he is braindead as fuck.

I don’t know whats so hard about switching from (jump back gun>teleport) xN to herp derp normals that extend by themselves into assist mix up.

You don’t think Wesker is top tier? Bout time to stop living in dreamland.

All the bad matchups you listed are arguable.

It’s not only about his combos even though they do have a big impact. Dante and Zero are pretty braindead, but the simple fact that their combos are “relatively hard” helps to hide some of it, which explains why they don’t get as much bashing as the WWs. You can bet your ass that if those two could get a guaranteed kill from an airthrow from any height just by activating XF and doing fisher price combos, there would be a lot of salt around.

Also it’s not the player’s fault that you only need to do abc combos to win with the character. Chris G and Viscant are top players, yet are still on that fisher price technology. Because there’s no reason to do anything else.

What part is deep about Wesker? Let’s see

Super that crosses up randomly and can lead to a ToD.
1f command grab that can be kara’d and almost unpunishable
3C, aka baby’s first reset.
Guns that travel full screen really fast, have an absurd amount of hitstun and lead to ToDs.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate on Wesker. Just accept the cheapness of your character and relish in it and laugh at the people who are mad instead of trying to make him look like this deep complex character that no one understands except you

 The only thing deep about Wesker is his bank account.

I need me some of those shades.

Best post I’ve read in quite some time.

I think the thing that irritates me the most about many members of the top tier cast is that their combos are so easy to do. With a few exceptions (namely Dante, Zero and Viper) most of their combos are ABC and require no command motions (qcf, dps, etc) whatsoever, or maybe one, and they don’t have to worry about doing anything complex that might lead to an execution error. Wesker and Wolverine might have an incredibly deep diary of strategy and emotion that people might not be bothering to read, but why would you when their basics win the game 90% of the time? That’s why they’re top-tier - their day one shit is reliable, easy to pull off and extremely effective.

Just put your duster and sunglasses on, slick your hair back, and soak up the hate.

As for my actual contribution to the post - Team Darkstalkers has been my day one team and I haven’t looked back, but good lord have I been tempted. The most I’ve done is change my lineup.

Originally I rocked Felicia on point, then experimented with Morrigan on point, with Hsien-Ko in the second slot to DHC into gold armor and then use her as an anchor and abuse it the whole match. Eventually this stopped working as people began to get smarter, baiting it or simply taking the trade with stronger attacks. I’d lose Morrigan or Felicia and it’d be down to XF3 Hsien-Ko, who is just terrible and can be ran from all day.

I realized the only way I could make this team work was if I put in some serious lab time with Hsien-Ko. My team order is now Hsien-Ko, Felicia and Morrigan.

I do have the luxury of using a character on point that most players aren’t familiar with, but she’s so bad… After a few matches in a set, people will typically wise up and realize that all they need to do is pressure her and she can’t do shit except get creamed. Don’t get me wrong, I win a lot with my team, and a lot of the wins are OCVs with Hsien-Ko, but I mostly chalk that up to match inexperience, outplaying the opponent, or just pure luck.

I was excited for UMvC3 at first because Team Darkstalkers pretty much had nowhere to go but up, especially Hsien-Ko. Then realized that you could go apparently go sideways, as all 3 of the characters received negligible buffs in conjunction with hard-hitting nerfs. I’ll be sticking with the team based mostly out of loyalty, but I’ll be cursing Capcom the whole time.

Teams I’ve dropped: Tron Magneto Akuma
Magneto Tron Wesker
Tron Zero Deadpool

I found it too difficult to get in with tron even with a beam assist. After watching Justin Wong and Nerdjosh utilize shehulk/tron I switched to shehulk dorm tron.

Looking forward to playing strange, nova, phoenix wright and iron fist.
