What causes anime fighting games to die so quickly

Blue Mary and B.Jenet as well!

In the 90s there was a certain quality since they were designed by competent pixel artists and animators who knew about anatomy.
But in the late-90s even SNK had to follow new trends. Hotaru, Kula, Angel, Hinako etc At least they had quality art and animation.

Blame to the licensing issues.

True that is a factor

Well, it’s not like Capcom doesn’t have enough characters to do a Marvel-style game with those alone. Hell, they could probably turn PxZ into a fighter if they wanted.

But yeah, I don’t want to get too far off topic here.

This. I love anime and I love fighting games but what I really love is playing fighting games with a character who doesnt look like a punk ass bitch who would be a rape victim even while behind held on remand.

I dont need every character too look like Bruce Lee or some muscle meathead, but I just cant hang with a character who looks like a victim, I dont enjoy that shit.

KOF 2002UM has plenty of them waifus if you think about it.

Also, yeah games like ArcSys’ might benefit from having a larger playerbase, less cluttered mechanics (or just a better tutorial), shorter combos… But niche things should stay niche. Arcana Heart? Skullgirl? These games are definitively made for a certain demographic and nothing else (they are just more of them in Japan.) They are reasons some people would go to these games instead of like SF or MK. It’s appealing to their niche.

I don’t really think saying “niche things should stay niche” when it comes to fighting games and their scenes helps AT ALL. That just drives things and people apart, discourages “cross-scene play”, and implies things are of an “us vs them” variety. Hell, that kind of thinking is a large part of what drove a huge wedge between people who play Smash Bros and people who play other fighting games, that’s only just now starting to slowly get fixed.

With airdashers, or like say…DOA, that kind of stuff does nothing to help the people currently playing them, the people trying to start playing them, people looking to introduce them to others, or people wanting to expand into other games as well.

This goes even further back. It has more to do with the rift of the Nintendo fanbase from the NES and SNES days. When Nintendo 64 arrived and Nintendo had to change their orientation, lots of Nintendo fans jumped to Sony and other platforms.

The emergence of Smash against the other fighting games is exactly a remembrance of why this occured in the first place. But now it does not matter much for those below 30.

No one is disputing that point at all. If I quoted every post that made this point I’d be quoting 70% of the posts in the thread. I’d probably be quoting every single one of my own posts.

The question is did you get my point?

That you have more airdashers compared to other styles of games, and that that get sequels quicker?

exactly so the issue of cannibalization in the anime community is on a scale that’s non comparable to other styles and makes it unique so the sarcastic remark that

implying that it is not unique would be wrong

But to your merit I would say that it is not an anime SCENE problem as much as it is an industry problem. However even that is 2 sided as we the consumers are steering the ship as its our dollars who power the whole machine. So what do you do do you request that overseas updates be presented in patch form when its a struggle just to get it over here to begin with. Do you skip out on titles? IDK I don’t have the answer but I did feel it was necessary to stand by the point because I don’t think being wrong about the issue at present will help us move forward constructively.

If u.s console was updated to current arcade versions of xrd and bb I would be playing. 15, 20 bucks update, I’d be down. Instead we will get the games for 40, 50 bucks a pop. And they will be current for a few months.

Aksys don’t seem to gaf about the u.s or anyone besides japan.

I dunno. Some of you talk like AH and SG (or DOA for that matter) have the potential to draw more players if the companies change something about what seems to be the most problematic matters in these games: characters and aesthetics. I mean sure it’d be nice to have more people to play them, but how can I get this kind of expectation when it’s obvious they are tailored for a specific demographic? Besides, you all forgot something (or think it doesn’t matter enough) which I think is pretty important: if they had to make changes, would they fit their own vision about the games?

And why the fuck would some guys tag me as ‘wtf’? I guess the truth hurts. But please, go ahead, keep doing it, I don’t care.

Ah the old delima of sticking to ones vision vs compromising to make money. Well that’s up to the developer. If they want their game to have mass appeal, then yeah some changes would have to be made. If they’re happy with the success their game has achieved on their terms, then there’s no reason to change a thing. It seems that companies like Arcsys are happy and content with the success they have doing things their way. It’s some of the fans that are butthurt that these games aren’t on par with Street Fighter and MK etc in terms of popularity and player base here in the west. I see it all the time on forums and on Youtube comment sections. Especially on Maximillian’s vids.

DOA2 at least looked far more appealing for a broader gamer base, similar to Tekken and SC.
But looking at the NintendoDS version few years ago and now at DOA5, they look so different.

It’s also worth pointing out that Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat have been around for over 25 years compared to the other series. Even the Capcom VS series has been around or almost 20 years. Blazblue for instance is over 12-13 years younger, so we have to remember it’s not like SF, Marvel, and MK just sprang up as popular all of a sudden overnight.

What are you talking about? Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat were ground breaking hits right off the bat ( well SF didn’t become an epic hit till SFII, but that’s the game that ushered in the genre) A game doesn’t get popular over time. A fighter either pulls in a large crowd within the first few months, or it’s doomed to fade into obscurity.

What am I talking about? Well, considering SF and MK came in during the arcade era and are literally thought of as the first 2 fighters by a lot of people (even when that’s not really true), they had things working for them as the fighting game market wasn’t as flooded as it is now. People will ALWAYS go and play Street Fighter because it’s seen as THE fighting game because of how long it’s been around or to the point where any city with a scene will have a SF scene. And even SF and Marvel saw dips in popularity at points (not to mention MK only really getting into the competitive scene on the same level recently), so it’s not like this contradicts things at all.

you obviously care and u gave me an “off topic” when i was on topic. you should have just pressed “disagree”.

The constant but slow-to-release patch/update system that they enforce to keep arcades relevant in Japan. All of Persona, Xrd, and BlazBlue are running on updated versions in JP arcades. Then eventually they come to JP consoles… then eventually they come to NA consoles. The result in NA is a feeling of “why even play this version now?” even though we won’t see that patch for 6 months.

When all the gameplay footage you see out of top Japanese players is being played in arcades, on a version of the game that you don’t even have access to, maybe you stop caring a little bit.
