What can Capcom's SFV learn from NRS's Mortal Kombat X

Yeah but those aren’t character to character specific intros

SFV should do streams like MKX did before the release so people get to see some content and get hyped.

Also a pre-order incentive would be nice like MKX did with Goro.

Here’s something I wish they would learn: chose your version of a character, complete with different costume and movelist. I don’t mean like that bullshit they did with alpha 3 for most characters where they said “you have a set list of specials, and you can only use SOME of them per ism”. Instead, do what MKX did: your complete movelist across ALL variations, and EXTRA specials depending on what style you chose.

It doesn’t need to be convoluted, just having a story mode is a big step towards appealing to the casual market. Single player content is big for some people.

Actually, alot of them were specific to certain character combinations. The difference is that they didn’t do it across the board for every match up.

Given that theres a ton of completely useless variations, and a hand full that had frame data overlooked so they have easily abusable infinites…I don’t think I’d want that.

Reading most of the above (especially about costumes and signature looks of fighting game characters), it’s pretty darn obvious to see the roots the respective games hail from.

I mean, is it not to hard to figure out? Mortal Kombat series takes things from not just the old martial arts and action movies, but also from American comic books (hence why characters typically can change outfits just enough, but still be recognizable).

Street Fighter (and most Japanese-made fighting games) tend to take from, Shounen, as mentioned before (thank ye, d3v). A character won’t change looks unless it’s something crazy significant in the storyline (like timeskips… usually).

Tetris needs a story mode and incredibly detailed destructible barrels.

Already happened, minus the destructible barrels.

Hah I suggest a grand sweeping epic where each of the signature pieces are represented by a House like Game of Thrones.

I assume you are talking about ranked matches. Capcom already did this with SFxTK. I hope they keep it like in SFIV where you can select the player to fight against.

For a character’s main appearance, a change can be something as small as Ken’s long hair being cut short or Akuma gaining white streaks like in SF3, or Bison’s nazi skirt (all of these are time skips because the SF story is moving through time regardless of what SF4 depicted, it was a reboot). These tiny things are actually significant in marketing. You’ll notice products like shampoo and candy do this frequently, it works. You also can always keep the main or original costume available and be a bit more adventurous with your design. The technology can do this fluidly, without compromising the game’s ‘roots’ as you say. Why does it have to be one way or the other?

The ST change in character color palettes IMO were a more dramatic change than what MK did to the most of their characters (and what I think many of us are implying) IMO.

Franken-charlie and skirt bison seem to be on the right track with this. I’ve said it before and i’ll say it again that I think Ken would look amazing if they maybe showed some of his discolored roots(his hair is actually black remember) to maybe just show a bit of age and grit, and the ends of his GI should be mildly charred to allude to his whole fire thing schtick.

Using the lab zero driver for starters…

This is true, just look at how SCV is considered a failure in the eyes of most of the fans due the lack of a story mode (and single player content for the matter) when compared to SCIII and SCIV.

I have always said that companies can make a good fighting game that caters both harcore FG players and casuals by having more stuff for the later to do, not only offline but online.
While i think that caring so much for the story mode is just bollocks i know it has its appeal among casuals, the only real problem is that for having something as cinematic as MKX you need money, this is a luxury that other franchices don’t necessarily have.
The best that we had so far from japan are stuff like what Tekken 6 did (even when many people hated on it at some critics pointed as a weak point) and visual novel stuff like ASW games with GGXrd being the more “cinematic” experience that they have offered so far.

Unless Sony is contribuiting with money, i am not really sure that we can expect a MKX levels story mode on SFV, since SF is always more in the middle ground on how much they invest into its making.

EDIT

What is this skirt Bison that some have mentioned?

Capcom could learn consistency from NRS. So far, I haven’t seen anything like Combo A only works on these characters but on Mileena, Ferra/Torr, and Jax, you have to be exactly this far away and do the combo when the timer is in a multiple of 4 for it to work. Combo B only works on Kitana in the corner when timer is in a multiple of 6.

Capcom could also learn to listen to its fans and not troll them like NRS did. They can also learn to listen to ALL of their fans and not just the Japanese fan base. But we all know that won’t happen.

This will be a real reveal of character for Capcom.

I have my suspicions about what direction they’ll go in though.

MKX does have that. Sub-Zero has a combo that only works on females. FA Jacqui has a corner combo that only works on males.

Someone said something about unlockables and how great they are in MKX and they really are fucking not.
I’ve probably have 5 days of pure playtime since they release, mostly playing online and I still haven’t unlocked the Krypt.

Unlocking that shit is atrocious. Easily the worst grind I’ve ever experienced since World of Warcraft and compared to WoW it isn’t even fun just fucking frustrating.
I know there’s 2P exploits with kustom kombat, but honestly who fucking sits there for hours farming koins? Is that supposed to be fun?

The unlockable system in MKX reminds me of shit that free to play games pull, like saying “Hey you can unlock all this shit by yourself, or you pay us a small fee to get it now.” then you realize what kind of a fucking grind lies before you and you’re supposed to cave in. Now the difference is a bad F2P game that uses these tactics is free, but I paid 70 fucking € for this fucking game so the people who designed the krypt can die from cancer in my opinion.
The real insult coming on top of the injury, comes when you go to the fucking PSN Store and see that those fuckers actually have the nerve to sell you a krypt unlock for 20€.
That’s 90€/$ for a fucking base game, not considering all the other stupid fucking costume and DLC character shit you may want to buy where you’ll probably end up with 130€ or some shit to have the “complete” game.

Is this game worth 120-130 bucks? Is this netcode worth even 20€?
I like the game very much but all this artificial content stretching and fucking greedy DLC shit leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

What in the actual fuck? The fact that people don’t go haywire over this, and people only go nuts on that easy fatality shit they sell, makes me very worried about the gaming industries current and future business practices, since it seems we let them get away with all kinds of bullshit.

Umm, pretty much every fighting game on Earth has character specific combos. Someone already pointed out that MKX does as well.

Now, you just sound anti-Capcom. Ed Boon trolls people ALL THE TIME. And, of all the Japanese FG companies, Capcom by FAR listens to the West the absolute most. Ono was really the first FG producer who openly welcomed feedback from all over the world via Twitter. He was the pioneer of the FG developer Twitter movement (that people like Harada and Boon now use religiously.)

USF4 had loke tests in Singapore and USA.

And, so far, the only confirmed region to get access to the upcoming SF5 beta test is North America, not Japan.

You want to talk about “listening to ALL their fans”…meanwhile, only NOW has NRS even tried to court Asia with a tournament series. Capcom has been doing tournament events worldwide for years.

Jacqui shotgun variation, too. In a pretty basic BnB, too. I’m sure there will be more as the game progresses.

Just wait until Capcom tries it. Then people will get angry.

Until then, it’s coo’.
