You just said it, NRS can do that kind of marketing only because WB is supporting them. Capcom probably wouldn’t be able to play such extensive publicity.
They should, I agree, just… you know, Capcom doesn’t have too much money to design too many stages or alternate skins without them being DLC.
I honesty don’t want SF to feature a big convulted story. Street Fighter has never been about the story. You can’t take too many steps forward and change stuff. MK they usually introduce too many new characters/actors in the story, they kill off people, they make people older, Street Fighter doesn’t need to. It doesn’t need to insert unnecessary drama or anything. Their characters are so fucking cartoony Dudley and Balrog can’t even drink tea or type on a computer without taking their gloves off.
Now, yes, I’d like them to put a better care of the story, because most of the intros and endings for SFIV were completely stinky irrelevant idiocy. But as making this a big storyline with everyone involved and a huge outcome… I don’t think so. Just have a sort of decent storyline for everyone with intro, rival battles and endings like Street Fighter Alpha level of writing and we’ll be OK.
Yeah, that would be good to entertain casual players, I agree. Would help to sell the game a little better.
Yeah they have done these thing. Maybe Sony can help them out this time.
This is part of the reason that I think there needs to be something significant in the game that just looks crazy. The average gamer (who is aware of FG’s) knows street as the most popular, but also as the most tame of fighting games. Having some wacky quality could really help the game standout and also help it distance itself from it’s predecessor.
I like this. Street Fighter was never really a deep story driven game, Most fighter’s aren’t but Street Fighter especially. Street Fighter should put more effort into explaining the lore and history of the characters in game, but no epic story like MK’s that ties everyone together is needed. I’d say a story mode for each character that explains their history, relationships with certain characters, and reasons for fighting is all that’s needed. A more story driven fighter would probably work with Darkstalkers seeing as how its lore has a lot more to it, but that’s another topic. And yeah more modes are a must. The average gamer wants more bang for their buck. Just 1v1 fighting isn’t enough to sell a fighter anymore.
This is an interesting observation because it seems that the rest of the industry isn’t following suit. For example, Harada has already gone on record that he wants to create “iconic” looks for his characters in Tekken, which is why most of them are wearing outfits in Tekken 7 that they’ve also been wearing for the past 2-3 games.

MK wants that too though. They’ve kept the character’s iconic, timeless, ageless costumes as their mains for arcade and versus modes, but in the official story mode the characters look different in accordance to where they are in their life, they also age. They also did it as to not spoil the story (you wouldn’t know that the characters changed from the trailers).
The observation I made isn’t limited to fightings games though, it applies to any product that’s been in the market long enough.

That’s the whole point, it ought to take a step or two forward in the direction of story because the casual gamer now wants a story in every thing. FPS, Survival, RTS, etc. So many good writers and actors have moved away from the big screen to the small screen and now to games because gaming is ready to be a great literary medium, a vessel for good story telling and it has been in the past 10 years. The fact that SF has never been huge on story is NOT an argument against it have an improved story.
Then there is the fact that SF does have a story, it is decent, with a common theme that binds almost all the characters together. SF4 was a reboot in many ways and essentially retold the story of SF from Gouken’s dojo all the way into the present. Reintroducing it and setting the stage for a better story this time around.
It’s different though, first considering that SF now operates on a principle similar to “comic book time” (i.e. the characters are never really going to age anymore). Secondly, for better or for worse, Capcom and Namco (and even Arc and SNK) are going for “Mario” levels of iconic design, where the characters entire look doesn’t really change much, hence we have Ryu still rocking that gi, Jin still in the same hoodie, etc.
Even though NRS changes the look of their characters very game it’s not far off from what fans remember of the characters. Scorpion and Sub-Zero still have the same basic design they had in MK1.
Exactly. The color palette is generally always the same, all MK characters have been consistently easily recognizable in every era. The mainstream are incredibly familiar with the MK characters, people I know who have nothing to do with fighting games know them and the general gist of their stories. Only SF2 characters achieved this level of celebrity but Capcom never capitalized on it until SF4.
But there’s been enough change though that you can tell which game each costume is from. Which is why you get up with “klassic” costumes
Aside from variations such as “SF1” and “Alpha”, Ryu hasn’t really had any sort of change.
In a way, NRS follows something more like how Hollywood does costume design for characters (especially modern, comic book characters). Meanwhile, SF follows something more like shonen manga/anime. Both reflect each series’ roots - MK takes alot from 70s/80s martial arts films and actually started out as a licensed game based on Bloodsport, SF on the other hand takes alot from 1980’s shonen manga.
Not only was it cool to hear so many different things, it wasn’t just like it was put in a generator and sloppily shot out a canon. My sister noted that they were actually having conversations (quip1, counter quip, response) instead of talking at each other. For example, I love how Kung Lao would say something confidently, but then people would mention Liu Kang, and his next response would be bitter.
I definitely would love some unlockable content. I get people who are wanting to do a quick tournament don’t want to play for 99 hours to get the subbosses, and that’s fair, but extras like alt outfits and stages, art, modes ,etc would be nice. I get the importance of catering to online, but single player, offline content would be nice too. I don’t want to rob the tourny focused players of content, but I also think that capcom can make both parties happy with a little effort (and Sony money).
I really did like how MKX did the alt costumes. I mentioned this on another board, but certain situational-based alts could be cool. Let’s say whatever manner they structure story mode (all encompassing w/ all cast like MK, or individual story modes like in Bloody Roar 2 or Guilty Gear XRD) we see Chun Li in between missions, she’s just come from a run and notices shadowy thugs trying to kidnap a family, she fights them off and then comes face to face with their leader __new SFV character!__After the cutscene, the fight starts with Chun Li in her alpha outfit, or a new casual outfit to match the cutscene. Same thing for Guile and Cammy on an extraction mission, or Ken in fancy new duds going to spar with Ryu at The Master’s mansion training dojo.
Arcade mode has the main looks, but playing through story mode unlocks the extras. I know Capcom likes their DLC, so that’s where they can relegate the other weird ones, or fun themed ones.
This is probably the easiest way to do canon alternating looks without worrying about alt costumes that show the characters aging. I’m fine with the comic book sliding time scale for SF. I’m for the characters making progress in their lives and journies, but that doesn’t have to be done by making people significantly older. Look at Sagat, the man with the most character development in the series, his changes are more focused on where he is in life and his attitude shifts, rather than his age. Sorry, starting to ramble, hah. Anyways, I think this would make the characters fit into realistic circumstances without stripping away the Shonen style of things.
OP already mentions this, but there’s a huge difference between being made by a fighting game company (Midway MK games) and being made by a fighting game company owned by Warner Brothers (NRS MK games). I remember Ed Boon commenting about how much more time they had to get their games right under WB.
The question is how much Sony is helping out, and how much Capcom is willing to invest. Although, this Manny/Mayweather sponsorship that SF5 has is intriguing…
Might be a good sign that Capcom is taking SF5’s marketing seriously.
Also, the fact that Ono has already confirmed rollback over input delay is glorious.
What Capcom can learn from MKX’s story mode: [details=Spoiler]don’t make it a linear narrative.[/details]
MK9 and MKX’s story modes boil down to a straight pre configured path. The only differences between the two is that the latter has QTE’s and cut-scene skipping, whereas the former has none of that and exponentially shittier story telling. But at the end of the day, they’re both really shitty movies with gameplay sequences smashed in like a McDouble.
SFV should take the Tekken 4 approach where you can select any character, learn their story, their interactions with other characters, and how their role ties into the central storyline. Of course, there should be pre-fight and post-fight cutscenes but that goes without saying.
It’s also in my professional opinion that OP is an autist, and a flaming bundle-of-twigs. Ain’t no one gonna read your dumbass wall of text; postin like a Gamefaqs novice :smdh:
