What can Capcom's SFV learn from NRS's Mortal Kombat X

The problem with MKX is that they focused too much on rushdown and set-play, forgetting the fact that other games focused on this (aka GG) actually have good defensive tools to balance this out.

1 thing they needed to let go in MKX is either the insane corner pressure of unreactable lows/overheads or giving a couple of character the ability to get the opponent to the corner for free.
Game is fun and all and I love playing it, but holy shit there’s nothing going on midscreen. Took pros at Combobreaker 5 seconds to get someone into the corner.

I feel like one of MKX’s strong points is its simplicity though.
To me Japanese devs have forgotten how to make a fun, simple game and bloat everything with 10 million sub systems.

Seriously though. FG developers seem to think the way to make a game simpler is by adding 5 or 6 new systems. HOW does that make sense?

This always amazed me about blazblue. You need to read a guide to understand the guard bar for each version of the game. Do they not realize that if you don’t scare them off, plenty of people are willing to buy anything with an anime squirrel on the box?

SFV is definitely going towards more the anime route and I’m sure Capcom devs have seen enough BoreFighterIV and ResidentSleeper emotes during streams where they are making sure to tailor SFV to be more engaging at all levels of play. You know something is up when Bison is decked out in a longcoat, has a projectile reflector, teleports and an OTG Bison stomp. They want Joe on the street to get hype about someone playing Bison and that will visually be more engaging than watching low chip damage scissor kicks all day. Let alone getting someone to actually play and use him.

Hopefully they get it all figured out so there’s a good medium between footsies and flashier screen flooding and set play type stuff. If they dont make everything hard knockdown and make the block stun last longer they’ll probably be in a good spot. Games like Alpha 3 and 3rd Strike had a good mix of engaging neutral and block stun pressure without being too heavy on reversals and hard knockdowns.

MK shows as far as the casual market goes, MK will always be king. It is the fighting game that is decked out with so much non fighting game content that it can be played as a game and not just a fighting game.

I don’t totally agree with this, but I’m just gonna leave it here for you guys to ponder…

Whoever said MK has better characters than SF loses any credibility whatsoever XD

Well as much as I love Ryu and Ken, I’d say MKs poster boys Scorpion and Sub Zero are more interesting characters. But overall yeah SF character’s over MK in my opinion. Like The original World Warrior 8 is far more iconic and recognizable than the original Mortal Kombatants. And most Street Fighter character’s where well recived and are still loved. Where as with Mk some where just flat out stupid and or forgettable. Sure SF has some that are loathed like El Fuerte and Seth, but they got nothing on the likes of Meat, Mokap, that dude with the bugs around him, that Vampire chick no one really remembers, Boi Rai Cho. However NRS did step it up with some of the characters introduced in MKX, I’ll give them that. Some might not be everyone’s cup of tea ( I think Kotal Kahn is bland ) but I can’t really say any of them are bad or stupid.

The problem with MK is that while some of the original trilogy characters were great (other stank, like Sonya or Stryker) and the personalities kind of good, after that the series started to fill with shovels and shovels of vomitive designs. Meanwhile Street Fighter never stopped creating nice characters with great fighting styles (meh, perhaps on Street Fighter IV).

And against MK, we all know the characters from the first MK were practically all the same thing, the projectile and that. Hell, they didn’t come with different normals for every character until laaaaaate in the series… Simply put, there’s no way you can say MK characters are better than Street Fighter’s if we make a fair balance, unless we start going by the tit count or so, LOL.

I hate it when people change avatars. Can’t tell who people are anymore when they do that.

If you’re referring to me. Hey I had the BB Hood one for like a year. Had to change it up. Buy maybe for recognition sake, I could keep a BB Hood avatar but just change the artwork

Well BBhoody with your username you have kind of locked yourself into having BB hood as your avatar. You can use different artworks, but it is quite strange to see Felicia (that is such a depressing picture…poor darkstalkers). ArtVandelay you also locked yourself to having a picture of George Costanza (again you can change to a different pic of him) due to your username.

Others whose name doesn’t refer to a specific character/person are more free to change. I changed mine as support for Karin making the cut for Street fighter V.

One has Japanese fan service the other is American fan service. Which one you like best depends solely on which tickles your weiner better. Only one of them has had consistently good to decent gameplay though.

And only one is made for peoples with good tastes, the other is MK

I remember when the first MK came out. Everyone was blown away by the digitized graphics, though I didn’t understand they looked like absolute crap to me. Thought even 8 bit NES games looked better. Then all the characters had the same normals, they were only differentiated by their specials. Universal block button? Gore, fatalities, very simple gameplay, as well as peoples’ bad taste in graphics led to it being a big hit as well as the start of a major franchise.

I’ve never understood how people could tolerate this. MK9 was even pretty blatant about it.

Probably because MK9 was entirely and purely built upon nostalgia for the classic trilogy thus the devs didn’t put that much effort into developing a complex system and hundreds of different animations/moves

MK X seems a bit better in that regard though

Street Fighter should use the MKX king of the hill mode complete with spectating and a live chat and text lobby. Its great fun in MKX. Also I shadow what everyone else has said, more unlockables, more single player modes ect.

They can learn not to patch every ten seconds, especially before a major like CEO #Kappa

actually nevermind, wrong thread
