What are your thoughts on Ryu's USF4 changes?

It not being online means it WILL NOT be tournament standard. Absolutely not. There are a lot of players whose sole way to practice and learn matchups is online. The organizers will come from the stand point that it would be unfair. Let alone it possibly being completely unbalanced. I’m sure there will be side tourneys on it, though, and money matches. Oh man, money matches. “If my character didn’t get nerfed to shit, I’d have owned you…” Haha, prove it now.

I wonder if Daigo will pick SF4 Ryu?

Depends on if he wants to win EVO or not. Based on his last two EVO performances Ryu isn’t gonna cut it especially now since the rest of the cast is getting buffs and Ryu is getting nerfed.

I’m almost 100% confident that Daigo will still be using Ryu in AE:2012, regardless of the universal -5 nerf on shoryu into fadc, just the new option to land U2 will be made effective because you’ll have to use meter no matter so it makes this buff actually worthwhile.

This isn’t Vanilla AE to where Ryu was literally at his lowest point and even someone such as Daigo stated in the early stages of that era on how fireball characters were practically useless, and at ineffective Ryu was in that version of SF4. Up to this point we haven’t heard anything negative from Daigo with Ultra Ryu so my vote goes with the notion that he still feels that Ryu will be a solid character, notice how I said not great.

Also Daigos performance at Evo with Ryu is Amazing, his only problem was going up against the One Man whom has basically wrecked him in multiple previous tournaments that they’ve played. Daigo beating Infiltration in a FT10 is nice, but it’s Not a Tournament so to me personally holds less water, considering that Daigo has lost to Infiltration at Evo2k12, Capcom 2012 and Evo2k13. In Daigos case, losing two straight Evolutions in a Row to Infiltration has more to do with Infiltration then Daigo opting to use Ryu.

Lastly, it seems like our chances to ask for buffs are gone. I’ve made efforts to ask for Ryu buffs prior to the final days, weeks…but I don’t think it’s going to happen unfortunately. We’re just going to have to accept that Ryu will be mediocre in the next game…“unless” proven wrong, however the normal consensus is he’ll be mediocre or potentially worse.

Daigo is saying in a interview that ryu haven t change enough. tired of playing the same character. red focus and other change not impacting ryu.

He said that he will switch to a grappler, zanghief or thawk, interested in guile.

As I said, ryu changes are useless…IT S AD THAT HE DID NOT SAY THAT EARLIER. may be they would have give ryu some new stuff.

6 year that ryu is the same…

Thats the same impression I got when I played Ultra. Glad Daigo has come to the same conclusion.

Ryu will remain in mediocrity. While characters around him get stronger.

Im going to look for a new character, to see if one fits.

When did Daigo say this? Post the link. I find it hard to believe he will play a grappler theres recent footage of him playing Zangief on a dare and it was pretty bad he couldn’t even do Giefs bnb combos.

here is your link. I don t think that an april 1 st joke.

an for his skill and capacity to do a zanghief bnb, projecting to play a character and already playing it, it s different. don t insult his skill, he will master zanghief bnb combo within 30 minuts.

That interview doesn’t state definitively that he’s tired of using Ryu. It simply says that he was hoping for More Changes to Ryu so that he could show the audiences new things. More over Daigo stating his desire to try other characters such as Guile, Hawk or Zangief doesn’t mean that he’s going to main these characters over Ryu, for at least the interview there does not indicate anything of the sort.

Of course their we know of only one time where he openly stated about dropping Ryu completely for another character and that was Vanilla AE:2012 when he spoke about how significantly weaker Ryu got which basically removed him from being a contender and the other aspect that fireball characters were pretty much dead in that version along with his desire to main and play a significantly advantageous character which in this case was Yun.

*Hi, this is Mad Catz’s (Daigo) Umehara. I’m a Ryu user.

Ryu is a character with all-around capabilities and a projectile. He also has the Shoryuken, an anti-air move with invincibility frames. And the Tatsumaki Senpuu Kyaku, which moves him across the screen.

Equipped with these three special moves, Ryu is a character whose play style is considered to be incredibly “orthodox”.

In terms of changes made to Ryu in USF4… one of Ryu’s most commonly used tools in a match, the cr.MK, now gives your opponent +1 more frame of block stun when it’s guarded. As a result… when you cancel cr.MK into Hadouken, there are more situations where this is a true block string during which your opponent has to guard both moves consecutively [as opposed to being able to interrupt with a reversal move between cr.MK and Hadouken].

Some other key changes made to Ryu in USF4 include being able to cancel the first hit of jump MP into a special move. This allows you to combo from jump MP into an aerial Tatsumaki, allowing for more combo possibilities, such as Shoryuken FADC jump MP xx aerial Tatsumaki. This particular combo greatly improves the risk-return trade-off for doing a Shoryuken FADC.

But perhaps the most significant change made to Ryu is the ability to combo into Metsu Shoryuken Ultra 2 (with full animation) from the first hit of an EX Shoryuken after an FADC.

Overall, the improvements made for Ryu this time around in USF4 are buffs that players can take advantage of without necessarily changing their existing play style with the character. Personally I think that many of the changes here are those that Ryu players will be quite happy about.

At the moment, there are a great number of Ryu players who always stick with UC1 Metsu Hadouken when picking their Ultra.

But now that you can combo from the first hit of EX Shoryuken (FADC) into UC2 Metsu Shoryuken… I believe this is a change that widens the strategeic possibilities with Ryu, making it feasible to pick UC2 Metsu Shoryuken or Ultra Combo Double in more situations. This is something I’m quite happy about.*

Official ryu’s arcade changes :
Ryu

  • Crouching Medium Kick is now -2 instead -3 on block.
  • The first hit of Jumping Medium Punch is now cancellable into Airborne Tatsu (EX as well)
  • Light, Medium and Heavy Airborne Tatsu can now be used in combos
  • EX Airborne Tatsu: Hitbox, as well as “vacuum effect” increased. Easier to land all hits now.
  • Light, Medium Shoryuuken are now -5f frames on block when FADC’d into a forward dash.
  • When you do “EX Shoryuken (first hit), Focus Attack Dash Cancel,” you can combo into anything except a throw.
  • Metsu Shoryuken (Ultra 2): One more frame of invincibility added

so no change… I am seeing plenty of ryu switching to ken in the future…

I’m going to list all of the significant ways I can think off why Ryu is better than Ken according to the USF4 arcade changes.

Slightly more damage off of SRK FADC Ultra

EX Fireball knocks down and is faster and Normal Fireball has 1 frame less recovery and start up

More damage if you land a j.mp

Faster (but more punishable) sweep

cr.mk has 3 more active frames and 1 less recovery but is 0 on hit as opposed to +1 and -2 on block as opposed to -1 and starts up 1 frame slower.

more invincibility on ex srk

m.srk is 3 frames as opposed to 4 mediated by the fact that delayed wake up will largely eliminate 4 frame safe jumps

Standing rh anti air, standing fierce comes out faster (better anti airs)

Better super

cr.mp combos into sweep

tatsu knocks down, is safe if blocked standing, and is better for better getting over fireballs

double hitting moves to break focus

The bolded points are the ones where Ryu is strictly better than Ken. So now you have to ask yourself why you should stick with Ryu. Your Ultras do about the same damage now (with animation Ken’s does more), your fireballs do the same damage. You barely ever land a j.mp in the first place, I guess you are supposed to fish for it now. You super is better, if you ever get it and didn’t use your meter for j.mp xx ex tatsu instead (lol). Really, the only practical advantages you will see in every match are: better anti airs, slightly safer fireballs and a better tatsu, all of these advantages already exist in AE 2012.

In exchange Ken gets an amazing kara throw, leading to great frame trap/throw mix ups and now he can stutter his jabs and combo into sweep. He gets a long range normal (step kick), and a long range overhead that is safe on block. Ken’s ambiguous ex air tatsu is still there, I believe all they removed was his escape tatsu. Ken is still weak to focus attacks from outside kara grab range though.

I don’t know, I’ll still stick with Ryu at the start but I’ll try out Ken and make the switch if I’m just getting better mileage from his long range pokes, kara throws and air ex tatsu

Good god why the FUCK did they buff Ken so much. I’m so jealous FUCK YOU COMBOFIEND for making this shit happen.

A lot of you guys are completely blind, Ryu’s chances in this game increases considerably with the DWU, even with the -5 on block.

Honestly, the changes aren’t even good or bad. The only thing that’s a problem is the Uppercut FADC on block stuff being unsafe stuff now. But, I mean at least every DP character is getting that nerf, but I still don’t agree with it. So either we have to be smarter with it, or start saving up 3 bars for EX shoryuken FADC. Or heck, might as well just use the 2 bars for red focus crumple into ultra even, idk.

Dp being -5 on block was needed.

Any ways Ryu with ultra 2 stocked and 3 bars is looking hella nasty.

You cant jmp at him, and you cannot afford to get hit by his cr. mk xx fb. Lol Ken needed those buffs.

Frame traps, lol he now has confirms into just below 600 and 500 dmg, depending on if you yolo or not.

NB: might be wrong about the cr mk xx fb xrfa. Not sure if its guaranteed so long as cr mk xx fb combos

Daigo got bopped by that Chun Li player in he Ultra exhibition. Chun vs Ryu looks really bad for Ryu.

lol “that chunli player” THAT chunli player is nuki one of the best players in japan and a 3s god and he was not even using most of chunli’s buffs

after seeing the stream of daigo playing, I can tell that ryu haven t change at all.

U2 is still useless w2 is usell with ryu.
jump mp… except for combo video I think we will never see it( and some AA to finish a round after a shoryu fadc)
red focus is useless
tech wake up kills okizem

i am sad.

Daigo was playing some hugo. it seems fun.

even if ryu is good, it s been already 6 years that this character haven t evolve…

Do not fix what is not broken.
