What are your least favorite character archetypes?

You mean an negative edge character like Megaman characters? The only time I hate that shit is when they don’t give you the signal that you are fully charge. So it’s like playing a directional charge character…but way harder IMO. Since you have to learn how to do button sliding, and other goofy things.

Joe the Condor in TVC is the worst offender of a negative edge character. I found him being one of the hardest character to play on that game.

That’s a valid point. However, I was being more especifically when the crossover series began, when MvC1 gave her that rape-like special. And then you have winning quotes like “I can have another use for that big mouth of yours” (Wright) or “Oh, I would love to play with those big tentacles” (Shuma), not to mention that most of her regular intro and ending quotes try too hard in making her seductive. I remember that her suggestive winning quotes in Vampire Savior weren’t that forced to the point of sounding dumb.

Besides, my dislike is more toward the type of overly sexy female character than particularly toward Morrigan.

I like Vanilla Sagat. They call him the king for a reason you know.

I think Viper fits in better than characters like Rose, Blanka, Sim, Necro or Twelve. Her design is fine; it’s her playstyle that doesn’t fit in much IMO.

I like how sf fans always bitch about archtypes and shotos but when they get a original character like viper who bas both unique moves and personality she doesnt fit and should be in kof.

Viper is one of the few things capcom has done to give me faith in their character design, btw Juri is not perfect but she is awesome and Im so happy she is in sfxT.

Better tham rose showing up for no reason and accomplishing nothing again or suckura. I cannont agree with the guy who said chun is boring and lame enough, finally someone says it.

Ooooh, the sex puns. That’s in a fit of irony…Lilith’s fault. Morrigan’s were more classy, while Lilith’s borderline loli ass
(well her sprite is, she’s right there with 1/3 of AH3 in artwork, and tenfold as suggestive)
couldn’t stop doing onomatopoeia and comparing battle bloodlust with orgasms because she’s supposed to be crude yet cutesy.
And on double irony, that’s actually how Morrigan was originally intended.

You can kind of see it in their Vampire 1 slot portraits. Felicia has a mature, alluring face and gester while Morrigan has round anime eyes and an innocent stare.

Lilith is probably the only DS character that gets close to annoying me.

And I wouldn’t say Morrigan’s MvC3 winquotes are as blunt. They have some class to them:

They’re more blatant in VSav and such because of mid-late 90’s translation.

As much as people like to rag on it for being weeaboo, the Arcana Heart series has exactly this. They took it a step further than that, and let you mix and match characters with elements for even greater diversity. A lot of the doujin fighters are like this, interesting/novel mechanics wrapped in a moeblob exterior.

You like listening to someone who sounds like a chain smoker amped up on Red Bull and crack? Both actresses suck. Bison’s VAs on the other hand, has rights to narrate my life.

You forgot Squirtle in Smash Bros. but water attacks and all other attacks are backwards in Brawl, but that’s another topic.

For my least favorite ones:
[]Mysterious, brooding characters that don’t talk
[
]“Cool cat” characters like Dante

Arrogant as hell characters - I’M LOOKING AT YOU, ZERO!
Now, I’m fine if they start off this way and show they have hidden depths because that makes them more interesting to me. Like, if the first type found some genuine happiness to open themselves up or something.

Gameplay wise, I hate characters who benefit over just waiting for you to attack instead of going on the initiative.

-The Super Evil/God clone Char

I suppose expecting an unbalanced character to sound sadistically unbalanced was a bit of a stretch. My bad.

i’m getting tired of these emo demonic transformation character archetypes.

what is so interesting about becoming a demonic entity?

the worst offender is Jin. hes an emo ass character that jobs to everyone and then turns into a devil.

another offender is vergil.

…huh?

Omg I jus ran thru some FF 13 and OMG those characters are the epitome of the type of characters I hate. The repeatedly used, rebel protagonists that rebel against some power or something for their own selfish reasons. I mean I cant help watching one of the cutscenes where they are complaining that the powers to be shouldnt be controlling em and how what their doing aint right and they basically want to change things to their ideal world. And I cant help but just yell at my T.V “YOU’RE DOING THE SAME THING U IDIOTS IN TRYING TO CONTROL THINGS AND ENFORCE YOUR WAYS” But I cant help but feel like all Jrpgs are like that.

As far as character design archetypes?

Characters who are given obnoxious, stupid personalities simply for the sake of being obnoxious and dumb. For Capcom games, this is essentially Sasquatch, Felicia, and Blanka.

Gameplay styles? There’s not really anything I’d say I hate, but I’m not a huge fan of “vortex” characters. It feels like that if they’re focused too heavily around that aspect of the character, it ends up detracting a bit from the more tactical and thoughtful aspects of the game.

edit - Oh, I could think of something I hate: Joke characters. Not thematic joke characters, but when a dev team puts resources into designing, modeling and coding a character that’s intentionally meant to be near-unplayable in a serious setting. It’s literally just throwing away a character slot.

I don’t recall Sasquatch being that dumb. He had some comedic relief, but that didn’t automatically make him a retarded. Victor would be more close to that aspect.

However, this reminds me how I dislike when characters that previously showed a normal level of intelligence are suddenly turned into a complete stupid. Poor Felicia ended suffering this thing just because some people like the “cute and dumb” archetype.

As well as someone else, a little bit.

:ub:

You’re… right. Oh my god. This is blowing my mind. Chun’s butt is now the best sexual use of negative space in fighting game character design.

Character-wise…

 • Schoolgirls annoy me because they’re usually either overly ditzy and/or painfully obnoxious.

 • Characters that are billed as “completely invincible and having no equal”. I never found Akuma to be cool at all.

 • Androgynous characters are stupid, too. It’s like the developers couldn’t think of a good design and said “Hey! I know how we can make this character interesting! Label it as a he/she so people can constantly debate over whather or not it has a dick or pussy!” Leo is some uninspired Rock Howard/Eliot looking hybrid that is bland as fuck, Ash Crimson looks so feminine he makes Benimaru look manly, and about 95% of Poison fans just want to fap over the idea that he/she/it/tomato may not have a penis despite being labeled by Capcom themselves as a transvestite.

Gameplay-wise…

 • Characters who excel at just about everything, but aren’t very hard to use effectively.

 • Characters with limited mobility (SF4 Makoto, Arthur). Feels really awkward unless you really have the patience, which I don’t have all the time.

I always thought Jin was a good contrast to Kaz/Hei because he was sensible (Like Vergil, his “angst” is somewhat justifiable). I hated how they pulled a 180 with his character and now he’s suddenly Kazuya 2.0 except with a slightly different suit. His design in T4 was probably my favorite because even though he had adopted Kazuya’s devil powers, they had completely redefined both his appearance/moveset to where he stood out as his own character.

And AFAIK, the only time he went all demonic on someone because he was losing was when he lost to Hwoarang…which is kinda ironic actually.
