West Virginia Thread: Shouting from Mountaintops

I would say a racist WVA joke, but he will just hunt me with his shotgun and spit on me with chewable tobacco.

:lovin:

Other gief here. Hellboy Tshirt. Asian.

Before SFIV I played a lot of 3rd Strike with the Chun player a couple of years ago before quitting. Used to play on a Tekken Anniversary stick. I’m still waiting on my TE stick.

The Chun player.

I’m up for casuals whenever. We’ve got a guy with a 46-52" 1080p flatscreen who’d probably host games/drinking in Morgantown. Could probably get a handful of players to show in addition, but most of them will be pretty fresh to the genre.

Also, the sister lives in Fairmont. If you wanted to get a group going up there and it ran crazy late, the guys from Motown’d have a place to crash.

Believe it or not, I haven’t been to the ‘new’ Southern X. I went when I turned 18, but it used to be in what was more or less a double wide trailer, which eventually burned, leading to them getting the big building with fucking spotlights aimed at the sky.

well I actually dont mind playing with either style. I am more used to the american MAS style since my MAS stick was my main stick for nearly 3-4 years. I actually owned 2 MAS sticks but one eventually crapped out and I replaced it with another that I bought from a fellow street fighter player. It was his personal stick for a long time before selling it to me, so it was used and worked in already. After all those years of usage, my MAS kinda kicked the bucket in terms of performance. It would need a total overhaul (New stick, buttons, and probably new board too).

It was kinda funny taking that thing to tourneys, and some players would come up to me and ask if they could use it for their next match; I would just give them this weird look and simply tell them “use at your own risk bro; dont cry to me if it didnt work for you”. They would walk away with the MAS with a “WTF” kinda face, and come back a couple minutes later with a “i hate you” face. lol

As for Jap style, ive used it plenty of times before and it actually doesnt bother me all. I adapted pretty quickly to its style the first time i used it. As mentioned above, I used to play GGXX:AC (I have been on a kick to play that game again lately) alot, and for some reason alot of GGXX:AC players use Jap style sticks (at least the ones I was around). The GG players would let me use their sticks for casual and I adapted pretty quick to using them. So really i care either way.

As for casuals…im down for whatever, wherever. If you happen to want to have a get-together over at your place, I really dont mind. whats another 20 or 30 minute drive? I drive an hour to work everyday anyways so im used to driving.

Since I recently moved here I am currently living with my cousin. So at the moment I am looking for my own place to live. When I do find a house, I will definitely be down for holding casuals at my place. Ill keep everyone informed.

BTW, anyone have a recommended spot where I could by the new Mad Catz TE stick? is ebay my only option at this point???

MagnetoManiac: You can’t be racist about West Virginians, they’re white. You have to make fun of their redneck culture and love of Nascar. But for Gods sake man, don’t say anything about the Steelers. I’m not a football fan, but even I feign enthusiasm for fear of the reprisals if I don’t.

Gigas Breaker, Bear Bones: Good luck on getting the TE, and perhaps we could set up a night some time where folks get together to play. I don’t know if you guys know any other players in the Morgantown area, but if you set up a Friday or Saturday night I’m more than willing to drive up and spring for some pizza or something for everyone.

Muffin Man: I talked to the manager at Best Buy, he seemed interested in running SFIV, but he has to go through his boss/etc. I asked about the TE/SE sticks, and he said they could put in an order for some but it might take a while to get due to MadCatz not being able to produce the amount in demand. Unfortunately right now if you want the TE EBay seems to be your only options. I’m currently in the process of deciding colors for the buttons/sticks for the sticks I’m making, I already have the major components I need (cases, Cthulu for ps3/usb, 360 pads, barrier strips, wire, tools) and I just need a few more pieces (DPDT switches x4, buttons, sticks). I also need to paint or stain the cases. If you want one let me know what color buttons/stick you want (sanwa) and if you want your own artwork on it or a specific color paint or stain. Personally I prefer the wood look for sticks so I’m staining mine, but I’ve got 4 cases to work with here.

As far as tournaments go when I spoke to him, I suggested the first tournament should be free, and we should offer up a TE stick to the winner, SE stick to second, and one of the fightpads to third. This would get the hype up, allowing us to start a second tournament maybe with a $5-10 entry fee and give the winners some money.

The guy from Gamestop I gave my info to has yet to contact me about tournaments, but he’s running the second round of the GS tournament Saturday. I’m not sure GS would be the best venue for this as the space is limited and it doesn’t look like we’d have room to drag in more TVs or anything.

I’m down. We’ve got a few guys wanting to play, but most of them are going to be entry-level and need grinding on before they’ve got any game down. I’ll call around and see if we can’t get something going for this weekend; maybe following the GS second round. Worst case scenario, I’ve got the room in my basement. The TV currently in there’s an older 32"-ish SD, though. Somebody’d probably want to haul something a bit more current over.

In general, when are you guys free during the week(end)? For now, I’m assuming that Fri/Sat is going to be the preferred all-around. See if we can’t get casuals or something going weekly or bi-weekly (ie. every other).

Faight, I am actually highly considering getting a stick from you. How much are we talking about here? I really dont mind what type of stick (with a little bit a practice i can get used to anything), i just want good quality. I hear Sanwa should be my choice if i want quality. Also, if i can i would like it to play on 360 and ps3 (if thats possible). Lastly, im thinking i would want a wood casing with a picture of some kind for the face, and color the rest of the stick a common color matching the faceplate pic (ie Pic with white background, color the rest of the stick white). But let me know what you can do and how much. I dont mind paying the price for it. in the end i just want good quality.

Those tournament ideas sound awesome. Keep up on them guys, from the looks of it. we need some kind of scene around here. If we dont do another Gamestop tourney, then maybe the managers of Gamestop or even Best Buy wouldnt mind sponsoring a tourney at a nearby location. Perhaps providing equipment or prizes, maybe even allowing advertisements at the stores themselves

Bear Bones:
Just an FYI on my schedule: I work the standard Mon-Fri 9 to 5 job. So evenings and weekends are best for me. Dont know about everyone else though

I work 2200-0700, Sunday night through Thursday night. This gives me the weekends off (Friday and Saturday night) but I’m usually asleep from 9-5 or so.

Stick will be:
Case: 60+14 shipping (insured)
Stick: 24+shipping
Buttons: 18 (6 face, 3 function, $2~ apiece)+shipping
Cthulu (ps3/pc): 45+5 shipping
360pad: 25

That’s $190~ there with only the shipping I’ve already paid for, and then I have to stain or paint, get artwork printed (usually 5-10 depending on paper/quality at Kinkos or whatever), solder the 360 pad to the Cthulu, wire it, install barrier strips, install quick disconnects, install the DPDT switch to swap between ps3 and 360, and then finally test it.

I’m not including labor so far.

I doubt I’ll profit off of these and I’m not looking to. Most stickmakers don’t unless they’re overcharging or ordering in bulk, and even then they’re skimping on labor costs as the amount of time they spend on them puts them well below minimum wage, and that’s if they get the price they’re asking for.

Just let me know what color sticks/buttons you want and I’ll order them, when I get everything else finished we’ll look at artwork and you can decide at that time if you’re willing to fork out or not. If you aren’t I’ll probably toss it in as a prize at the first tournament we do or try to sell it on the Trading Outlet for profit. If you pick a neutral color like white there is a lot you can do with that, so it’s an easy one for me to work with.

Yell I say lets do this. I need a new stick bad.
Well im thinking white all around (stick, buttons, and case). like you said its pretty neutral, so choosing artwork should be simple.
So what do you want to do to get the ball rolling on this?

EDIT: Quick question…is the case wood or plastic? what kind of design is the case itself?

This is the case. I got them from Kaytrim’s Kustoms (SRK Name) over in the trading outlet. It’s unfinished. I’m probably going to stain mine, at the very least I’ll seal the rest unless you want it darker.

Unfortunately right now I don’t have the tools or workspace to make my own cases, but once the weather warms up I can use my back porch for woodworking so I’ll start then, I just wanted to get a couple out the door.

Balls already rolling son. Putting in my order for sticks/buttons today.

Right now, we’re looking at next Friday (3/6) as the most likely day we can get everyone together. Unless somebody’s got an alternative venue for casuals this weekend, plan for that.

I’ve got plans after the GS r2 now, so I’m really only free Fri/Sun of this weekend. After that, I’m good for whenever.

Next weekend is good with me, I was planning on hitting up NoVA this weekend to hang out with Renegade.

Hey Eric you should try and make C3, I’ll be there bro. Or one of the next C3’s. Lemme know so we can try and hit 1 up.

whats C3?
Sorry ive been out of the scene a while hehe
id love to hit up another tourney though

C3 Cyber Club is a tournament location in Northern Virginia. I can’t remember what the C3 stands for because I think it’s changed since they use to be at the clocktower, it’s like Camps Clubs and Cocks I think (I kid, the guy who runs it has really directed his business more towards babysitting kids that vidya games so the C3 changed if I remember when I was discussing it with him).

Regardless, it’s a pretty big location, there is a moderately priced hotel near it, and the venue boasts a lot of talented players.

I’ll probably be going to the one I linked above, if you want to carpool.

Quick update:

Nobody else showed up for R2, so the two of us from last week auto-qualified for the third round. In all honesty, it was more of a disappointment than anything. I’ve no idea how close the next nearest competing Gamestop might have been, but picking up more players would’ve been way fucking more valuable than the pad and so-many-hours drive to the third round.

Speaking of: Faight, man, if you manage to get a venue for tournament play and all that, I’m cool with just donating the unopened Fightpad as a whatever runner-up prize. Unless somebody local’s wanting it, I’ve got no need; converting it to incentive for more players to show up is fine with me.

Nothing concrete on venues yet, Best Buy is going to be months in the making getting approval from managers/store managers/regional managers. Gamestop hasn’t contacted me. If you guys have stuff at WVU like a vidya game club or one of those anny-may thingies maybe they’ll help us host one on school property, as I assume they have commons areas where we can set up. I know when I went to VCU in Richmond we had a video game club and did tournaments and brought in people from outside of the school, stating it was a fundraising event or something (I can’t remember the details).

Not only that, but the school club can do the majority of the grunt work in advertising/etc to get locals interested, as I’m sure lots of college kids like SF, and we can just post on SRK.

I might put up a custom stick as a bonus prize for first place depending on how fast I can churn these things out.

I know the guy who runs the anime club at FSU, though I’m not sure they’re very well funded or organized. I’ll give him a call and see what he can’t do for us. I do know the Mountainlair has a widescreen and a 360 set up in the game area now, and probably wouldn’t mind hosting if I could convince them of student interest. I’ll try to stop down later this week to talk to one of the guys running it.

yea im down for some tourney action. i only play GGXXAC tho
i gotta see if i can find my ps2 stick somewhere if i go
hey so whats the status on the stick for me…just curious, no rush

Bear Bones:
the general public wasnt invited to join the second round right?

Also, do u have any info on the anime club. id like to find one around here if i can.
thx
