West Coast Warzone - Irvine, CA - Sept. 4th-6th, 2009 - SF4 BONUS $1000 | KoF12 $500

When did the finals happen?

Shit I remember the stream took a break for BB last night, but I was under the impression SF4 finals were monday.

I agree with top 8 making money. But I may be biased because I got 4th in BB and was forced to stay way longer than I expected since the BB tourney didn’t start until 6 hours past the scheduled time. Enough to cover gas and overpriced hotel food would have left me feeling much better about scheduling holdups in general. Oh well.

I’ll just add this to the argument: If money payouts for 1st weren’t worth so much (70% of the pot), then people wouldn’t be keeping secrets to themselves. SF4 has a large enough community to get to Japan level if they’d work together. The back and forth exchange of counter-tactics and char-specific strategies among top players just doesn’t happen enough because there’s good money to be had for holding out. Money matches and regional rivalries add to this.

So basically, are you willing to give up large money payouts, rivalries, and the hype generated by it to achieve higher level play? I’m thinking the answer for most of actual tourney-going SRK is no. It’s probably not going to change, but I would be pleasantly surprised if people could prove me wrong.

In a double elimination tournament format, you’re only guaranteed to get the accurate results for the top 2. Everything beneath those 2 people are subject to luck, ease of matchups, etc. Spreading out money that far in a double elim format would be silly, because there would be people in top 8 that didn’t deserve it as much as somebody who finished outside of top 8.

As an example, image you had to play vs Valle early on. Since he’s the #2 player in this tourney, unless you were Marn you lost. However, another person could have had an easier run into top 8, where he then lost to Valle. Neither player is better than the other, they just met their equivalents at different times in the tourney, and one gets paid because they were lucky enough not to face Valle early?

Unless the format changes to something other than double elim, paying out beyond the top 4 doesn’t really make sense

OH! Big question that I and apparently a bunch of other people were wondering…

Did Valle use Gouken at all?? At one point it looked like he did but later on some people were saying that he was on 2p but sitting on the left. HMMMM

That might be true in a 20 man tournament, but in a 250 man tournament, you can be pretty exactly sure that the top 4-8 players are also really good players. I think it’s kind of crazy that 4-8th place doesn’t get his money back. Would first place be so much less enticing with a $30 smaller payout (or whatever) that that player wouldn’t have shown up in the first place? I mean, of course not.

Yeah in a tournament this size I can agree with that, the top 4-8 were all really good players. It also had a lot to do with the fact that they were seeded that way to ensure it happened, which was at the cost of 2+ hours of time waiting to actually get started.

When you have a prize pool of $4k, you’re able to spread the love a bit, but I wouldn’t want to see all tourneys turn into a top 8 payout. Hell I’ve been to tournaments where the third place guy got a payout that was less than he paid in, I just don’t want to see it come down to spreading that thin.

Roughly 10:45PM is when the SF4 Top 8 started and I think we walked out about 12:30am.

I’m fairly certain he did very early on Saturday. I was standing behind them playing and the other character wasn’t Ryu so…

ahh feck you nigga i play better when i’m not intoxicated

ran that train for a good hour on you niggas

yall got JABBED on son

ARABIAN GOGGLES/MONOCLES on MOVAL FTW!

Thanks Seedy, I couldn’t get a straight answer on the live stream chat, so I figured once BB started up that was the end of SF4 hype for that night.

Tournaments that want to be considered “Majors” should have “major” incentive for top 8. Random 25 man tournaments can keep the top 3 since the total prize money is low; however, it seems difficult to want people to travel to WC Warzone when a consistent top 8 player will never get anything.

These guys exist. Getting top 8 isn’t just “luck and seeding” when it’s 256 players in a live streamed big hype tournament.

Game #6 was just heartbreaking with that Shoryuken @ 1:35 :looney:

Congrats to Marn!

Thanks for the videos SeedyROM.

Hey Dentron I just meant that this was a pretty hype tourney. It was very entertaining to watch. I do not disagree with your comments and actually do agree with them but I still had a ton of fun watching this thing when I had the chance. Not making excuses but this was the first and I think it will be better managed next year. But we’ll see. Just wanted to clear up my comments and claim foot in mouth or keyboard cause I can see how my comment could be taken that way. I also would like to thank Seedy for the videos as well.

Viper videos were underwhelming and the rest was Rufus…the better Viper.

Still respect to Marn for coming all across the US to arpe. Valle is too good for someone who has been playing for so long.

im west coast and i predicted marn to take it all. hes really level up lately, grats to him

lol @ payout for top 8. thats scrub shit, and there’s no guarantee anyone outside of top 3 is necessarily better than the people they ranked higher than. donate to your heroes if you have such a hard on for their performance

Marn is a beast! kinda disappointed westcoast didnt win but tha better player won…

rep’ed:cool:

Great tournament… I had to take off as BlazBlue was wrapping up so I could get home for work Monday morning, but other than the delays, everything was amazing. I’ll be staying an extra night next year to make sure I don’t miss the finals!

Yeb is my fucking HERO.

thanks for all the vids man
