West Coast Warzone - Irvine, CA - Sept. 4th-6th, 2009 - SF4 BONUS $1000 | KoF12 $500

No, this tournament was managed poorly and went way beyond schedule. I’m sure the organizers are eager to correct their mistakes for next year.

I still had fun anyways, thanks be to WCW.

Okay guys, I put off sleep to get these videos up as quick as possible. Here’s Yeb’s Top 8 match against UTJ and his Dhalsim. What an amazing show “Slap Chop” put on  Spread these around…if he wasn’t on the map before WCW, he will be now!

Stupid Youtube, I clicked Public. NOW try it

I’m also uploading all 8 of the Grand Finals matches between Valle/Marn and a few others. Keep an eye on my channel for when they finish uploading/processing. I’ll try to do more in the morning but now I need to sleep…

Big ups to Cami, John Rog, Gootecks, Kai and everyone else who helped put this together!

^ good shit seedy.

need more **YEB **videos =)

Did only the top 3 (out of 300 people!) win money at this tournament? I’ll be disappointed if Yeb didn’t win anything for that awesome performance.

I’ve got the final match between him and Floe and also the one with Ed Ma (with that sick Special catching Ed after an air fireball). I have to merge it with his standing ovation and upload but it’ll be tomorrow.

Sadly Yeb finished out of the money (Top 3 get 70%/20%/10%) but what he did earn was a truckload of respect!

sf4 matches…2 out of 3 for shots…lets do this!

Nice round you got on Philipino Champ there bud

Why are you still up! Shit, why am I still up!

That’s a damn shame. I mean the 15 man scrub tournaments I used to go to at arcades years ago paid the top 3… why are 300 man tournaments doing the same?

There’s $4000 in the prize pool, it really should be spread around a little more. I mean if this was poker, there would be 30 people getting paid. It doesn’t seem right that you can outplay and outlast 296 other people and get nothing at all… meanwhile Marn’s taking home $2800.

Big tournaments need to start spreading that money around, give more of the best players a chance to win something. And it’s a lot more exciting for the players who are really good but aren’t top-3 caliber, knowing they have a real shot to pull in some money when they enter a tournament.

IMO a payout structure like 1500, 900, 600, 400, 200, 200, 100, 100 would have been great. Personally I would pay out the top 16, you don’t have to take that much money off the top to toss out $20 or $30 to the 9th-16th place finishers.

Anyway I don’t mean to be all negative, this was an awesome tournament, the stream was extremely well done, and it’s unheard of for that kind of prize money to be added into pot… amazing job by all the people running the show. I just wish Yeb got what he deserved.

Latest batch of videos is uploading and now it’s really bed time. I’ll do more tomorrow. Keep an eye on my channel as in the next hour or so for these to process:

Yeb vs. UTJ
Ed Ma (using Balrog!) vs. Eric Choi
Grand Finals - Valle vs. Marn (all eight matches)

He did; he garnered the respect of thousands of fighting game enthusiasts, got a chance to level up his game immensely and retained the urge to practice even harder. Top 3 payout has always been the way tournaments have run. The difference between rising spots on the bracket once you get to Top 8 is astronomical, which is why the payout is the way that it is. With poker, it’s easier because the pot is much higher, but if it isn’t, then you are just spreading the dollar too thin and I personally think that is something that poker does wrong.
30 man payout is ludicrous in an event where there is only a few G’s on the line, especially when even Top 5 payout gives something like 40% of the pot to 1st place.

Your idea for the payouts is a proactive piece of contemplation, but payouts with numbers that low would deter big name players from areas far outside of the West Coast reach from coming to compete, which is a huge problem with the US scene in general. We don’t want our majors being so contained as well.

Certainly not trying to make an attack on you or anyone, but I think people shouldn’t try and put a price tag on Yeb’s performance and should try to look at the bigger picture here.

Oh yeah he’s definitely not coming out of this with nothing. And there’s the fact that yesterday no one knew who he is, and now all of SRK is a huge fan of his and trying to find more videos of his Gen, that’s definitely cool.

But I would say what he deserves is… all of that plus a couple hundred bucks.

That’s no reason to keep doing it.

It’s definitely harder to advance in the later rounds, but that’s why there’s a small payout increase in my listing when you go from no money to 8th, then slightly bigger if you make top 4, and then really big if you keep advancing.

They do it even in $1 tournaments.

Well to some extent I agree. Top 32 would be too much, top 16 is arguable and maybe not necessary, but there’s no reason that at least the top 8 shouldn’t get paid.

You seem to have the impression that the tournament winner -has to- get 2/3 of the prize money and it just isn’t right if they’re not pulling in multiple thousands of dollars. There’s simply no reason for that to be true. $1500 would be a great first prize.

Also - this tournament was expected to get about 180 people, with 3 of them getting paid. When almost twice as many people show up, is it really that crazy if you had twice as many people winning money? With 300 people there’s plenty of money to pay out the top 8.

The “top 3 only” rule is an outdated leftover from the times when tournaments had maybe 30 people show up at most. Top 3 is what should get paid for a local small time competition, not for a huge event with hundreds of people.

Outdated or not…the best of the best reaps the rewards and always will no matter the prize structure. Get hungry if you wanna win.
