BarFights1/2 brought 100s of spectators to a non tournament due to SF4 - Sounds like hype to me
EVO 2009 had 1000+ players, 7K pot of pure entry money due to SF4 - Sounds like hype to me
WCW1 Brought back the closest thing to a major in SoCal since EVO was in UCLA/CAL Poly due to SF4 - Sounds like hype to me
LA Riots1/2 brought a new element in top SoCali prize fighting due to SF4 - sounds like hype to me
the list goes on…
If your definition of hype is people shouting nigga this nigga that… maybe you should stop taking the “educated” route because this doesn’t help your cause.

Thats not my definition of hype whatsoever. EC videos have always been more entertaining, whether it be mvc2 or SF4, because they just have more personality and true rivalries; if they lose to someone they feel they’re better than they are legitimately disgusted. There is clearly a reason why so cal commentators constantly use their vernacular. Or am I wrong? You’re arguing that attendance + money = hype, which I agree is pretty sick, but i feel there is an element missing.
To my actual point…You, of all people, I thought would agree that Justin wong on a socal team for ANY 5on5 did not add up. I’m not even trying to hate on sf4 or Justin, I feel everything I said was true and justified. My intention was not to make this a sf4 v. mvc2 thing at all, it is clear which game is more popular and has more potential. And my opinion is only educated because i’ve played marvel for 8-9 years and I feel it should be the marvel community, active or inactive, that should have a louder voice in determining the team.
Grow up? There is only one of us between the two that still plays games…

So your form of entertainment is a hate fest video after beating somebody down and take their money? There’s more productive ways to do that other than to look like an idiot and embarrass the community. Go look at videos of yourself doing that and see how much of a clown you are. But thats my opinion, cause I surely don’t see what’s best for the community with the nonsense going on.
Hate is an excuse to make yourself look better when in reality your worth is as good as the quarter you spent on the match.
When it comes to money + popularity, SF4 is far superior than MVC2 ever was its first year in.
If you want hate and rivalry, oh its there, but the community has grown up and accepted there are better players out there.
This is the true meaning of maturity and progression.

My 2cents about mvc2 teams-
Justin should be allowed to play on team SoCal because he is a RESIDENT OF SOCAL.
Who are you to tell people he shouldn’t be allowed to play. You might be a great mvc2 player potter but you don’t represent good leadership to the community at all.
If everybody is scared to enter now because of it or feel its unfair, that’s your own fault for not being able to take him down.
I’m kind of at a loss about what to do about it. I understand both sides of the argument. Ultimately, a Marvel event should be discussed by its players.
I’m talking to Kai about it a little more.
On the flip note, today is the last day to receive the full benefits of booking a room and registering for the event.
Is there any kind of spectator fee for this? I’m thinking of coming down there with some others but not planning on entering any tournaments. Does the venue fee still apply for me? I’m not sure I saw this on your website.
Although I agree with some of your points and I am an sf4 player, it is undeniable that marvel carries a different feel in terms of hype. marvel single-handedly carried evo for 7 plus years. I dont think that it is so much about people acting like clowns as much as people acting/celebrating out of excitement. Marvel has/had some very interesting rivalries in terms of personal dislike and the nature of the game (fast-paced, exciting, anything can happen at any time, unpredictability) added to such rivalries further perpetuates its sense of hype. As enthusiastic as I am for the street fighter series, it simply doesn’t carry the same “coolness” or excitment that marvel does. (Although I also respect your point that at times it gets to be a little too much, but I guess that’s “mahvel baby!”).
As far as earning the same money, I would also have to disagree since more money was thrown in 2 money matches last year in Marvel than 1 year of sf4 tourneys combined. These kids are putting up amazing amounts of thousands of dollars on the line. I’ve hardly seen any type of money/hype being put up in sf4. Again although I am an sf4 player, I have to give credit where credit is due.
Btw, socal would win without Wong or Hyo. Neo will lead Socal to victory
The 5on5 was to see who is better in terms of norcal or socal. It seems my definition of socal is different from others. I was hoping to play socal all stars such as potter/duc/soo/etc. but i’m silly for thinking that because these players are past their primes.
As calipower pointed out as a motivator, for my incentive at least, was to make money. Not avoiding wong/hyo because we are scared. Norcal, nor I are trying to get better at this game. Therefore, it would be pointless for us to play against wong because we know for sure we cannot beat him. Thus, decreasing our chances of winning money.
-sf4 has already decided the best. There is no competition. EC scraped everyone.
-Marvel was MORE hype/interesting because of the perpetual competition that occurred over its entire lifespan. which game has done this? Exactly.

SF4 has generated a larger audience due to new players, more money in tournaments, evolved spectator events never before seen in a previous tourney aka BarFights (watch some BarFights/LA Riots videos or Daigos MMs and check out the crowd reaction), worlwide inspired main events = SF4. Cannes,Germany,Japan,Australia,Korea TV Shows, etc etc
You guys really need to open your eyes when it comes to hype. The marvel hype was strong, but the SF4 HYPE is WORLDWIDE.
I understand you guys feel strong for marvel and it had a good run. It definitely started the hype and will always be around. But theres a new Hype Monster and the bubble is far from bursting.
Suprised none of you have heard of the SF4 stimulus package of 09 in the EC. Ask Arturo about it =)
