"We must get back through the portal and CLOSE IT!" Doctor Strange Team Thread

I’m currently running Vergil (Judgement Cut)/Wesker (Samurai Edge)/Doctor Strange (Bolts of Balthakk).

Bolts of Balthakk is fantastic for locking your opponent in place for teleport mixups with Vergil/Wesker. Also good for extending combos.

My general strategy for now is to wreck shit with Vergil and utilize teleport mixups with Vergil/Strange to build a couple of meters, then combo into a DHC to Wesker to get Wesker’s G-Factor*. From that point on, I usually don’t need to use much meter, as all my Wesker combos lead to easy resets and do around 600-700k. I’ll generally save the meter for if/when Wesker dies, since Vergil and Stephen are meter hogs. I usually won’t burn X-Factor unless I’m going to finish off the opponent. I save it for Stephen, along with some meter. I honestly think XF3 Stephen with meter is the best anchor in the game. If your opponent presses anything, they lose 600k. Not to mention dagger spam.

Overall, I’m pretty happy with this team. Strange is working out a lot better for me than Nova was.

^ i agree bolts of balthaak is a really good assist i use it not just for mixup but to check my opp and clear the screen of any nonsense there attempting. Im running Doom/Vergil/Strange Doom gets real good use of bolts because it gives him the ground controll he so desperately needs and if your to far for a mixup after you call you can just put up a couple missles and get your approach. I personally havent had much exp with him on point or built teams around him on point but looking at his toolset i think hes good as an anchor. on point or dead center i just dont like his buttons enough to take him off the bench.

I feel like all the characters I like in this game don’t really work well together. Right now I’m really liking strange and taskmaster but I have no idea what to do for a third characters. I’m torn between wesker/frank/dormammu. I tend to use a lot of meter with taskmaster and strange though… any suggestions?

Doom. he’s Strange’s best assist character and a very strong point character imo, and he can cater to any team’s needs since you have the choice of a horizontal beam assist (Plasma Beam) or one that can control vertical space and bail your point character out of trouble (Hidden Missiles). Shopping Cart would be a good defensive assist for Strange which can help in making his blockstrings/pressure more safe. Wesker is a solid battery/anchor character and having a useful OTG assist to extend Strange’s combos without using up your Graces is a pretty good deal. that way if you can confirm into an Impact Palm you basically get 2 free Y Graces. one more and you have access to that near-instant tatsu mixup that can crumple on hit.

Thanks, I’ll give them a shot. I always found doom to be… awkward? I really like frank but I was using strange behind him to extend frank’s combos with eye of agamatto but it seems like frank has some really tough matchups against characters like wesker or deadpool.

Wesker otg assist seems great for extending combos and building that extra meter which I seem to use a lot of with a strange/taskmaster team.

Currently I’m using either Strange (b)/ Dormammu (b)/ Hawkeye (a)

I figured I need an assist the keeps the vertical space occupied like Jam Session (except I hate Dante). So Dormmamu it was, and then a beam like assist that doesn’t knockdown so that’s where Hawkeye comes in. Strange b helps Dormammu setup high low mixup in the corner and resets as well as mid-screen and corner relaunches without a problem. Hawkeye having a beam like assist obvs goes a long way for Dorm too.

And Hawkeye, I’ve no clue how to properly play him yet but with XF3 everyone’s scared of him as is and he can do mad chip using all sorts of arrows.

Though the team just doesn’t feel cheap enough, I’m beginning to think Strange may be better off 2nd in a team since he’s starting strats are absolutely abysmal, hell Frank West gives him problems.

But having him 2nd I’d use the team of Zero (a or b)/ Dr. Strange (b)/ Dr. Doom (b).

Since Doom helps Zero do stupidly long and damaging combos around the 900K mark as does Strange but also providing mixup and pressure.
Depending on the matchup I’d either use Ryuenjin as a get off my into air Impact Palm or use Hadangeki so if I ever hae 2 meter and wanna punish anything I can DHC from Sougenmu into SoV thus giving Strange a much better Hadangeki for teleport mixup. And again Doom for lockdown + combo extension…

Again, this team doesn’t feel cheap enough. What say you?

Magnus attraction + Stranges EoA assist = wow

and strange like beam assist.

Strange (EoA)/Iron Man (Unibeam)/Strider (y) for now. Strange seems to like Unibeam because of how it keeps the opppnent grounded, and Strider on anchor is not bad because I get to abuse Vajra for double SoV combos and protecting the skies. Ouroboros + XF3 is also pretty good, I gotta say. I’ve been wanting to try out new Iron Man for quite a while now and well, I guess now I’ve found my reason lol. I’m gonna keep playing around with this team for a while, see what combos and general strats I can come up with. I feel that a defensive assist like Vajra is gonna be crucial for Strange’s point game. Doom and Vergil are gonna be moved to a different team cuz I like Doom on point a lot. need to come up with an anchor for that team, though…

I’m loving the Doctor. Lately I’ve been running with Mags/Strange/Sentinel. Would a gone consider this a good team? I just feel that Doom and Strange were made to synergize each other but I feel that once Strange is down for the count, Doom has mobility issues. Is this just my inexperience with Doom speaking or is it generally tough getting in on most Wesker/Dante/Zero/Vergil teams?

And Sentinel. Should he be on Bombs or Drones? I just love that Bombs don’t disappear when he’s hit but I feel that Drones provide better teleport mixups.

Thanks!

I’m running Zero/Nova/Strange right now. My basics are this. Zero, gain meter and hopefully do as much damage as possible. Nova, he’s just damage control. Strange, SoV xfc3 combo deaths. If i don’t have meter when strange is out (like if both characters died quickly), you have to make sure that you can get in one combo on the character and get one kill. His setup game for incoming characters are god-like (in my opinion). I don’t see it used often in matches but a EoA and a trackign slow orb helps alot.

Oh and I don’t know off the top of my head (and I’m at work) but does anyone know if the mystic sword is safe? It seems so.

L and M mystic swords are safe on block, but L can be crouched under by some characters and M can be hit out of startup during blockstrings. Flames of the Faltine is also safe on block but like M Sword can be hit on startup.

(not 100% on this info)

edit: I have the guide now, M Sword is absolutely not safe. Only safe specials are FoF, EoA (lol startup) and L Sword.

I’m using dr strange/wesker/doom. Wesker/Doom was my main duo in vanilla and one of my most successful teams was to put dormammu on point, which gave him beam assist for general zoning and teleport crossups, and wesker gunshot for extending combos and meter gain from combos

obviously Dr Strange and Dormammu are not identical, but he seems to benefit from these assists in many of the same ways. Wesker gunshot is especially useful when you can’t get the crumple from impact palm and have to just go into air magic series combos that normally don’t do much damage or build much meter

Normally Dr Strange seems like the kind of character that should go second so he has meter to burn and can still benefit from at least one assist, but with Wesker assist I feel like he can generate his own meter and do enough meterless damage when necessary that he works on point. With Wesker assist he can get an easy 450k+ combo off of teleport crossup plasma beam that builds its own meter to end with super, and Dr. Strange can burn all the meter he makes on point because when Wesker comes in he’s not going to need it.

Wesker feels a bit like a crutch on this team to make up for my lack of skill with Dr Strange, but for now it seems to work well enough

How do you guys think Strange would work with Doom as a second and Wesker as anchor? Also, Hidden Missiles or Plasma Beam? I’ll definitely keep Albert on his Gun assist.

I’d think Plasma Beam would benefit Strange better. It gives you a way to mixup when you don’t have time to set your own stuff out, keeps your strings safe (and comes out faster than HM!), gives you double left/right mixup opportunities, solid 600k+ confirms, etc.

So out of all the characters in this game, Dr. Strange seems to have the most interest, and there’s a team I’ve been messing with.

Strange
Wesker
Vergil

The on point character seems to change between Wesker and Strange. Is this a team with anything looking like synergy? I know everyone is still figuring out Strange, but I figured it’d be good to ask, as I’m a complete Marvel scrub (This is the first MvC I’ve ever played).

Hi guys. I’m a real noob in this game.
I’ve been trying Strange and I like him, but I don’t know how to make a team.
I like Spiderman/Strange/Vergil but I dont know about assists or if this team could work
Other chance is West/Strange/Vergil…
What do u guys think? Can you help me?

Long story short, I wouldn’t recommend Dr. Strange if you’re just starting the game since his gameplay’s pretty unforgiving if you mess up plus he’s got some heavily technical stuff. If you’re still up for it, practice your loops (they build about a meter + 20%), practice your zoning, and work on getting your controls down.

@sheera – Definitely give Strange/Vergil/West a shot. The Shopping Cart is good for Strange in that it pushes opponent’s back + leaves the opponent standing letting an Impact Palm hit crumple so you can follow up.

@shockna – I’d switch your team up to Strange/Vergil/Wesker, mainly for Level 3 Wesker. Outside of that, I don’t play much Vergil or Wesker, so I can’t say much else.

ive been running, strange(EoA)/ Frank(shoppnig cart)/ and doom (missiles) since this came out, and ive had mixed feelings about this team. the reason i like franks shopping cart is cause it doesn’t knock down and you can easily teleport behind and get an easily confirmed full impact palm combo off of it. also if i do my strange impact palm loop and do an air exchange to frank, it immedietly gets him to lvl 3/4 depending on the assist and such. if im playing keep away, then i spam missiles. it keeps them locked down real well and gives me plenty of time to set up EoA and daggers M for teleport mix ups. im going to drop frank though and put doom as 2nd with beam assist (even though i love missiles so much) but im still unsure of who to put as my 3rd.

opinions on my current team?

all criticism is welcome.

Thank You Sir

it still blows my mind you have time for two teleports before doom’s beam assist comes out, I may not have this down execution wise yet but when i do its gonna be nasty…
