"We must get back through the portal and CLOSE IT!" Doctor Strange Team Thread

 1. Thor is a point character. He doesnt need meter for landing good damage, is a reset god, has a ton of health, and is not good at all as anchor (not a good speed buff in XF-Lv3). Can be good in the second position because his assists are actually good (Mighty Spark M is an underrated beam, and M.Smash M has invincibility startup as a crossover assist, and is a good GTFO assist while causing that ground bounce). But there are a lottt of characters that do better in the second position.

 2. Cold star helps Strange in the zoning, the mixups, doesn’t cause knockdown on standing characters (allowing Impact Palm to crumple), allows j.IP hitconfirms, etc.

 3. Strange needs assist for buying momentum and starting his game, but as anchor, in XF-Lv3 he is a TOD machine with no weaknesses.

Hey, back with a few questions,

For a Spencer / Strange / Ammy team, what is the general gameplan I should keep in mind, since I tried this team with some friends and [S]spammed Bolts assist while doing nothing of importance with Spencer [/S] found myself winning matches only because of Ammy anchor.

Also, is there any possible way I can get Chris, Spencer and Strange to work on a team together? I’m slowly starting to dislike using Ammy since I feel I rely on her too much to HHHHHHH wins for me. Chris and Spencer are my best characters by FAR and if I could use just these three, everything would just be peaches and gravy.

I think if I’m gonna play Marvel 3 again, I should just quit beating around the bush and pick the derp. Wesker/Strange/Ammy. I feel like writing some points about their synergy for whatever reason so might as well. I feel that this team can be a good starting team for people learning to pick up Strange and go all the way with him-- a “Ryu” team, if you will, because it’s easy to pick up and takes a long time to get the best results with it.

Wesker - Strange

 • Bolts assist for neutral approach, space control with SJ gun
 • “Oh you ducked under the Bolts? Gee, thanks! command grab
 • Combo extension
 • Phantom Dance and SoV DHC well with each other
 • SoV DHC helps snipe characters with strong aerial mobility and zoning, such as Trish, Doom, runaway Storm, etc.

Strange - Wesker

 • OTG assist opens up Strange’s throw game and makes it very deadly, especially when doing resets in the corner because you can go right into Faltine loops. This lets you convert off throws and go for resets without the need for Graces first. Very good for Strange overall, opens up a lot of possibilities for corner setups that would otherwise be highly improbable or situational.
 • High-low setups with OTG assist, blah blah blah.
 • Generally a good idea to DHC into Wesker for the shades buff

Wesker/Strange - Ammy

 • Lockdown with Cold Star assist
 • Ammy THC always godlike for mixups
 • Combo extensions
 • Strong anchoring abilities with XF3

tl;dr Wesker derp + Strange = good, OTG + Strange = godlike, Ammy THC + anyone = godlike. I dub this “Team Mystic Scrub”.

I played this a while back, it is indeed really good.

I had my ‘fuck it’ moment last week. I’m going OMG ITz Strange (but without combo-dropping).

Wesker/Vergil/Strange and fuck it. Enough with trying to play the right way. Being a retard in this game pays off? So be it.

I’m loving this “Mystic Scrub” team xD

I will stick to my team RPG: Knight, Mage, Healer.

@Mazio, other easy characters that go well with Strange-Ammy are Taskmaster and Cap. They have some nasty setups, for example, after of a DHC kill, Strange can put out an EOA, hard tag to Task, call ammy and do the unblockable. I’m not a fan of Wesker Strange Ammy u.u

Command grabbing you from under the Bolts is still nasty though.

@tortonon: Why not Vergil on anchor? Same thing with Ammy except his neutral assists are not as good. You get a way better anchor though.

I can also vote for Wesker Strange as quite a good friends

The plan is to rock Vergil last indeed, but bolts is too good for both of them.

Also, bolts is a great assist for neutral game, while rapid slash is just too vulnerable for me to spam it.

Whenever I can get him anchor (TAC, dhc, or whatever) I will do it. But at least to start it I think it’s better to keep him anchor to avoid getting popped as an assist.

Alright, so for a while I’ve had the hunch that the reason a lot of characters are “low tier” is because they perform best with other “low tier” characters that no one wants to pick. Everyone wants to pick a trenchcoat, so when they see a character doesn’t work well with the trenchcoat that character becomes “low tier”. Players like Kusoru (sp?) and Dieminion have shown that there’s something to this hypothesis.

Since I first saw Dr. Strange’s trailer, I’ve felt that Dr. Strange and Hsien-ko are BFFs. Dr. Strange needs something to give him space, and he can protect Senpu Bu with Seven Rings of Raggador, removing its greatest weakness. Hsien-ko needs an assist with a lot of screen presence, and I think Bolts of Balthakk is a strong choice for her. They also have good DHC synergy.

I’m usually too bogged down by trying to work out the kinks in my own main team (Firebrand/Dormammu/Amaterasu), but I’m thinking about taking up this hypothesis to prove a point, even if it’s just online casuals, to show that there’s something to the idea. I’m also working on a Ghost Rider team, because I think he has more going for him than people think.

So, my question to all of you is: what do you think my third for the Dr. Strange/Hsien-ko team should be?

Thoughts I’ve had:
Doom (Hidden Missiles) - works well, but it’s kind of overplayed and I’d like to avoid it
Amaterasu (Cold Stars) - great for Dr. Strange and Hsien-ko mix-ups, makes good use of both assists
Shuma-Gorath (Mystic Ray) - great for full-screen approaches with Dr. Strange, helps Hsien-ko control the vertical, and he loves the assists of both characters

Just don’t try and talk me out of Hsien-ko/Strange. I’m not set on a team order. If I had Shuma-Gorath, I would probably go Shuma/Hsien-ko/Strange. If I had Amaterasu, probably Hsien-ko/Strange/Amaterasu. If I had Doom, probably Doom/Hsien-ko/Strange, and I’d just play it safe until I get 2 bars, then do Doom->Hsien-ko, and raw tag Strange in for Strange/Doom/Hsien-ko.

Amaterasu seems like it would be most helpful of the three, since it would give Strange time to set up an offense. And while I don’t know too much about her, I would imagine it would give Hsien-Ko enough time to do whatever it is she needs to do like close in, or get away to activate her armor.

And on the aesthetic side of things, the team would be pretty cool looking as well

EDIT: Are there any other possible assists that you could use? For some reason, I feel like Skrull and Ironman might be able to help them both somehow

I’m open to suggestions, but it doesn’t seem like Skrull and Iron Man would get a lot of mileage out of armored Senpu Bu, which seems like it necessarily has to be a core aspect of the team.

Karst, I really think Haggar/LeiLei/Strange would works wonders. Actually, the bolts give Haggar plenty of opportunities to the hoodium or to backdrop (if you read a jump) or a SPD. Also, he’s a hefty point character that deals a ton of damage, which may be the last final piece to this puzzle. If things get out of order, lariat will either give you the safety to bring an EoA or even start any of his loops against any button presser.

Wesker/bolts is amazing. Virgil/bolts is also very good. As if you guys needed even more confirmation on this. Shuma benefits greatly from bolts, and mray is great for strange.
Strange is a decent enough anchor once you get one kill he has a lot of nasty setups on incoming characters, but he would be a much better anchor if wesker’s gun didn’t pierce through agamoto. That matchup is quite the pain.

Hey Foo. I watched your Shuma-Gorath play, which gave me a lot of confidence in the combination. I really want the team to be about accentuating Strange, though, and not just his assist. Bolts of Balthakk is definitely one of the most underused assists in this game.

Once Strange dies, this team will get zoned to hell, though. I’ll explain more below.

I played a 25 match set with Shuma-Gorath (Mystic Ray) / Hsien-ko (Senpu Bu) / Dr. Strange (Bolts of Balthakk) last night.

Team Virtues:

 1. If I get Dr. Strange up there backed by Shuma-Gorath and Hsien-ko, I feel borderline invincible. The combination is just as strong as I thought it was.

 2. Able to deal with a huge variety of playstyles.

Team Weaknesses:

 1. If Shuma-Gorath dies, Hsien-ko has to survive incoming mix-ups and take chip - gah.

 2. The biggest problem - when Dr. Strange dies, Shuma-Gorath backed by Hsien-ko isn’t actually that good. He’s too slow for it to work well. Hsien-ko backed by Shuma-Gorath isn’t too bad, but it’s not good either.

 3. The idea behind the team is Dr. Strange using Hsien-ko while being able to protect her. Unfortunately, with Shuma-Gorath on point it takes 2 bars to get Hsien-ko armored, and then I’m without meter for protecting her. It’s not reasonable for me to try and wait for 3 bars most of the time, either.

 4. Two low damage characters. Dr. Strange does good damage, but Hsien-ko and Shuma-Gorath don’t, even in their full combos (which I admittedly can’t do).

 5. No good use for X-Factor outside of Dr. Strange, so if he dies there’s almost no chance of making a comeback.

All of this leads me to what should be an obvious conclusion: Hsien-ko/Dr. Strange rocks, but Shuma-Gorath needs to be replaced. I don’t think Amaterasu is a contender because she would have problems similar to Shuma-Gorath in getting zoned (my opponent was using Morrigan/Hidden Missiles). Right now, the team weighs too much on Dr. Strange, so I think I need another character that can really abuse Senpu Bu and Bolts of Balthakk. Doom is definitely a candidate for this, since he is good at getting in without using specials so he can call Senpu Bu at any time. The character also has to be good on point, because I don’t want Hsien-ko or Dr. Strange taking damage so I can preserve the former for her assist and the latter as my true point character once I get him in. I also felt like my meter was completely wasted in going from Shuma-Gorath to Hsien-ko, because Hsien-ko just tagged out. I’d like a setup where Hsien-ko can follow up after the DHC to try and TAC glitch the opponent (since she’s not susceptible to TAC counters while armored, though the TAC itself can still be countered).

Current thoughts:
Doom (still)

Skrull - gets full combos from Bolts of Balthakk, high damage and health, good DHC to
Hsien-ko through Skrull Torch (I assume), Senpu Bu gives him nasty command grab setups, excellent user of X-Factor

Spencer - gets in for free, loves Senpu Bu for mix-ups, Bionic Arm to Rimoukon is a good combination, big damage, good X-Factor user, and slant shot is a good assist for Impact Palm into big damage

I think I’ll give Spencer a try, but I’m open to other suggestions, as always. I’m also considering Morrigan.

if you go Spencer, TK-Bomber after calling bolts will make the second one of them juggle the opponent, allowing an extra up-grapple.

it is really WTF, but it works.

How good would Viper/Strange, Strider/Strange, or Vergil/Strange be? Looking to explore these three after finishing exploring Dante with Strange/Ammy.

Viper/Strange is very good. Here’s some of the things you can do with their assists.

Nice Video! Well I guess I could run that team for now since I know most of Viper’s neutral game and combos. Marlinpie 2.0?

Question for all of you:

Which is the most broken team you can fit Strange in?

I’m done working my ass off to try and win. I want chars that win easier.

Wesker/Vergil/Strange is good, I’m using it, but as crazy as it may sound I think that a Strange-team could be cheaper.

What do you think?

Team update:
I played 120 matches with Spencer/Hsien-ko/Dr. Strange today, and 50 matches of Doom/Hsien-ko/Dr. Strange. I don’t feel as though either is a clear winner. The Spencer team has better DHCs to Hsien-ko’s Rimoukon through Bionic Maneuvers and Bionic Lancer, but Spencer’s assists, while good for a lot of teams, don’t feel very helpful for Dr. Strange or Hsien-ko. Spencer backed by both assists is really monstrous though, and once he dies Dr. Strange backed by Hsien-ko is also very hard to deal with. However, I felt as though Spencer was pulling the main weight of the team. I’ll add that Spencer might be the easiest character I’ve tried to play in the game. I’ve never gotten over a dozen OCVs with a new character before. I also got a compliment on my Spencer play and on my Dr. Strange play, which is flattering since I don’t feel as though I’m good with either. The biggest problem with this team was small characters like Amaterasu, who can pretty much ignore Bolts of Balthakk. It turns into a neutral game between Spencer and Amaterasu, because your opponent won’t be able to get assists out thanks to Strange.

Doom/Hsien-ko/Dr. Strange builds better meter than the Spencer team, but Doom didn’t feel as strong on point as Spencer did. That might just be me, though. He was a lot more versatile than Spencer, since Bolts of Balthakk combined with Doom’s projectile repertoire allowed me to outzone a lot of teams. People pretty much always had to come to me if I wanted them to. This team was definitely stronger for Dr. Strange, especially if I kept this lesson in mind: if my opponent jumps, I teleport. It’s a pretty long fight though, as Dr. Strange doesn’t have any great ways to destroy characters that are superjumping around the screen. It’s definitely a team you need patience for. My hunch is that this team is slightly superior to the Spencer team, but both felt strong despite me not being great with any of the characters.

I beat a surprising number of people with Hsien-ko, once even reverse OCVing someone. I’m not going to pretend she’s secretly some great character, but I felt she was very playable when backed by Dr. Strange, and faired well when backed by Strange and Doom. You have to play very patiently, but that’s Hsien-ko’s nature.

I also had someone ragequit against the Spencer team, which was the highlight of my night, even above reverse OCVing with Hsien-ko and beating several XF3 characters with her (people just don’t seem to know what she can do).
