Disagree, Strange with 5 bars is in different tier status to meterless Strange.
Point strange is not that good because there are a ton of characters that have a favorable matchup against the Dr., and Strange needs some space for placing EOA or for doing his mixups, so he is not the ideal match starter character.
I would rather call Strange the ultimate TOD character when in XF-Lv2 / Lv3
Well, X-23 def. tops Strange on the XF 2 free TOD since she can guard cancel to get an almost free kill on 2 characters as long as she has a 1.5 meters stocked. So as long as I don’t burn my meter, Strange dying gives me what I need for 2 free kills. So I’m not too worried about him getting his teeth kicked in, in the grand scheme of things.
What I would like for the end game is someone that can counter bad zoning matchups and has meterless frank level up options and isn’t boring as fuck to play (and, personally, that sounds like all sorts of Doc Strange.) Almost any crumple is a free level 4 frank and Cart does a pretty solid job of creating space for zoners. That, coupled with teleport, should be able to get a free combo/crumple any time cart connects, set up an EoA on any block or superjump. I’m pretty sure lv.2 FoFs can be used to set up hard tag combos for situations where you’re not close enough to the corner to use a crumple hard tag option.
I’ve been thinking of a Haggar/ Strange/ Arthur team or maybe a Strange/ Haggar/ Arthur team. I can combo off of haggars grabs with daggar assist (without using up my ground bounce either) and lariat + daggars seem really good for strange.
Dante wasn’t my style and I got bored of playing Doom since Vanilla pretty much. Figure some other person will have better success with Strange/Dante than I will since I couldn’t get used to Dante’s neutral game. It’s good, don’t get me wrong, but I felt like giving more underutilized characters like Jill and Ammy a try, and they worked.
Zero/Strange/Dante is super busted. Faltine loop into Lightning loop? Yes please. But not for me though, I can’t stand Zero even when I’m the one using him lol.
I’m thinking about replacing Ammy with a GTFO assist with some invincibility, since Strange will get mauled being the point char, and Cold-star wont deal with DIIIIIVEKIIIICKers and such. I’m tending to go Akuma. Frank would be awesome if he didnt require the team to play for him. Any other options worth looking at?
Strange in 2nd with a good point deals with annoying point chars. Seriously, consider it dude. Me and Serp have been thinking that’s the best spot for Strange.
(Spencer,Wesker,Dorm)/Strange/Ammy, IMO. I’m not a fan of starting Doom so I wouldn’t recommend putting him up front.
What’s the best strange assist to use? EoA is really good for corner resets and stuff, but the bolts are also really good at locking down. not sure about daggers
I mess around with these three options and Strange/Ammy all the time lol, it is really good. I’m gonna try Wesker/Strange/Akuma next, and Strange/Doom/Akuma after it
In time: I agree with you guys, Strange is probably great as a 2nd. But I dont care about getting bodied, so I’ll still try and run him on point :3
I would say Bolts. Mix-ups with Wesker that give you forever to confirm, and the OTG -> Pipe with Haggar will actually combo really well with Bolts assist.
I swear that every single post of mine on SRK is me asking who to use… lol
Anyways, every time I see Doctor Strange on the character select screen, I keep thinking “One of these days I need to just start using him on a team that is actually built for him.” and I guess today’s that day. Problem is I have NO idea who pairs well with him. I’d really want to put him first, but reading the thread, apparently he’s better in the second spot.
And well, the only characters I have any real experience with are Chris, Iron Man (kinda), Ammy, She Hulk, Spencer, and Tron. Do any of them pair well with him/help make a well rounded team? The only team I’ve tried with him in it has been Tron/She Hulk/Strange, which totally sucks to be honest. I want to have Strange on a B team, since I always switch between my Chris team, and my Tron one, but eventually make him part of the main one, if that makes sense.
I wouldn’t mind trying someone new though, if it helps me make a more rounded team.
I was leaning toward Shuma-Gorath/Dormammu/Dr. Strange last night, but I think, instead, that I want to give a shot to a team that I have been thinking about for roughly 6 months, but never wanted to play because I hated Dr. Strange:
Dr. Strange (Bolts of Balthakk)
Dormammu (Dark Hole)
Morrigan (Dark Harmonizer)
Dr. Strange plays the delay game while building meter. He can make good use of the meter for himself to punish assist calls and such, too. THCing between Dormammu and Dr. Strange does let both Spell of Vishanti and Chaotic Flame hit, but I haven’t tried the DHC yet. DHcing to Spell of Vishanti and Stalking Flare hits for only part of the flare.
As soon as I have some meter built up, I DHC Dormammu in and play the Dormammu/Morrigan synergy up as much as possible. Lots of Stalking Flares, in other words. Dr. Strange covers Dormammu’s biggest problem: beam hypers can no longer stop Stalking Flare since I can now DHC into Seven Rings of Raggador.
If my opponent has a keepaway team with something like Vajra, I’ll just turtle with Dr. Strange while calling Morrigan to build meter to kill the assist with Spell of Vishanti XFC Spell of Vishanti. If the opponent has a rushdown team, play standard Dr. Strange keepaway. If the opponent is teleport rushdown with Hidden Missiles/Jam Session/Vajra, I start the fight with Dormammu or Morrigan on point instead, and use Bolts of Balthakk to shut down the opponent’s assist while having a strong rushdown game myself.
makes a lot of sense, Karst. And the DHC works between SoV and Chaotic Flame, but you need to DHC asap so the CFlame will hang the opponent and wont let him go skyhigh.
mm @Karst, not sure about playing Strange on point with those assists, basically any strong rushdown point character will break through Strange defense very fast. Dieminion plays Strange + dark harmonizer and we all see how his Strange is always demolished when V.Joe dies.
If Strange can put out an EOA with the help of Dark hole, or if the other player knows nothing about the matchup and is lamed by jump up-back > delay > Impact palm / dagger L, then it will be ok, but if you are going to face a Wolverine / Cap. America / Vergil / Taskmaster / Wesker / Spencer then your Strange will be in a very dangerous situation.
My first day with Strange was pretty decent. I had a positive win record with him on point. I spend a lot of time superjumping and doing qcb.M, qcb.H, rdp.M for mix-ups and combo starters. I’m used to playing Phoenix and Dormammu on point, so “run away and don’t get hit by Wolverine” is an old time favorite game of mine. I just need to learn better setups with Strange post-knockdown. I feel like I should save meter as much as possible.
Maybe I’ll switch Dormammu to Purification assist for Dr. Strange to have a little wall up, but I have a feeling Dormammu will just get killed if I do that…
Definitely liking how this team is going, after giving it some time. Slant Shot + Teleport is hilarious on incoming characters along with getting two crumples during combos, and Cold Stars gives tons of time to set up glyphs/EoA and covers Strange being unsafe on, well, everything but I’m not too sure whether I should be using EoA or Bolts assists. Daggers seems kinda awful, IMO.
PS: holy hell Flame loops are fun. Took forever to get the timing, but I can do it consistently now, love it! Once I get my gameplan with Strange down, I know I’m gonna have some great fun with combos
Nvm anything I said about Dorm. Viper/Strange/Ammy is mad retarded you guys. lol. I feel like this team can wreck at high levels. Viper already does an excellent job controlling the screen but pair that with probably the best DHC in the game when you have meter going is hella scary. Oh, and 1.1m midscreen raw tag combos off an EX Thunder Knuckle or Focus Attack? YES PLEASE.
Viper/Strange seems like Viper/Doom (Beam) to me, just that you’re basically trading Doom’s mobility and a more generic (read: user-friendly) assist for probably the 2nd most damaging character in the game next to Zero and a really scary DHC for punishing stupid stuff. It’s kind of an even tradeoff for me because I feel you’re not really doing all that much in neutral if your options aren’t stacked, like running both Missiles and Vajra for absolute screen control.
I’m gonna try to stick with this team because I’ve always wanted to get good with Viper. My main in Vanilla + my beloved main in Ultimate = can’t be a coincidence that they work fairly well. Just hope I have time to learn Viper’s neutral game though. It’s gonna take quite a while…
