"We finished practicing now?" Cody Match-up Thread

I originally thought Hugo was really easy to keep out with Cody, but if the Hugo is varying his jump in normals/timing of them, he can be hard to AA consistently without trading.
The trade is almost always in his favor (especially with jump HP ouch).

I feel delayed bad stone can be good against all grapplers until they have meter or a reliable way to punish the start up.

picking up the knife helps.

I don’t think it’s all that bad. But people should be picking up the knife.

I think Hugo is pretty bad. I could be wrong but from what I’ve seen, all his wins come off gimmicks like random ex lariat. Hail Mary ultras. Etc.

That is your solution to 95% of matches it seems lol.

he’s a good character. Just hard work. Though most of the recent matches i’ve seen are hit/miss.

Probably because most of the matches i’ve commented on the knife actually helps out. (Though to be fair knife helps out in grappler matches.)

That and because it’s a tool a lot of Cody players still ignore.

They ignore it because you lose mor than you gain :frowning:

you lose slow projectiles for a 3f cr.jab, further reaching normals and some chip?

I’ll take those chances. :coffee:

Rocks/delayed rocks/fake rocks is a very strong tool to give up.
Knife jab may be 3 frames but it has worse active frames recovery hit block stun and isn’t cancel able. Your footsie damage is worse with the knife. How are you using knife jab that makes it that much better?

Oh and the hit box is worse :frowning:

Unrelated jumpin os throw beats rose ex spiral

You still have fake knife (which is still a good option between throwing it and not throwing it.) and if you do throw the knife, you get rocks back.

cr.jab with the knife just means Cody has something to mash out of in pressure if need be in matches that he needs it. (primarily Abel.). It not being cancelable isn’t that huge of a deal considering you’d be linking it into cr.short if you got the hit confirm. 3 frame chainable normal? i’ll take it.

not to mention you get the better s.forward hitbox for footsies.

Stand forward is a pretty situational tool especially against Abel :3 agree to disagree I suppose.

st.forward was in general. not specifically abel matchup.

3f normal against abel makes a huge difference against a blocked step kick or pressure.

I wanna know how you guys approach the C. Viper matchup. So far I’ve been losing a lot against her and having major problems.
I either:

  1. Get poked by cr.mp a lot
  2. Get hit with thunder knuckle during my blockstrings
  3. Get seismo’d to death.

Good Abel can time fierce to trade with 3 framers fairly consistently. How do you deal with stand short with the knife?

Being outside of stand short range (which is technically step kick range.) Generally want to be right outside that range to counterpoke with jab.

I haven’t done too much of this match in Ultra (maybe only 2 games against a viper?) but cr.MK at least is a issue now. If viper is getting TK crazy, you could stagger your blockstrings. As for seismo, you have focus, blocking (probably best), and now somewhat crack kick. You can neutral jump.

Normal cr lp interacts better with st lk step kick and leads to more damage tho plus you don’t lose frame advantage for traps that Abel struggles against

Does anyone feel like the Gouken match got a lot more annoying after his EX.Tatsu buff ? That thing has a huge range now . I just don’t feel as confident in approaching him as i was in the previous versions. I don’t think it changed the match-up fundamentally but i think i need to be more careful approaching him.

How are you getting ex tatsu jumping? Stay on the ground cr jab buffer is strong along with the new slide make this match feel easier IMO. Delay wake up also helps us much more than him.
Delay back throw is still great for baiting reversal now we don’t corner ourselves  the risk/reward on ex tatsu is huge and if you can get him to burn 3 bars its big as gouken is one of the more meter reliant characters

How do you guys deal with Kens f-MK?
I rage at the move.

c.lp buffer mk ruffian does well against f-mk, it’s either that or stay at the tip of the range and whiff punish

Focus attack works too
