"We finished practicing now?" Cody Match-up Thread

One of my best matchups on ranked is against Makoto. I think throw beats all of her wake-up options (except ultras). It’s risky to use anything else on her wake-up (if she has meter) until you’ve conditioned them to tech on wake-up. Makoto players love backdashing though, so you can OS f.HK on your jump ins, or OS mk.Ruffian from cl.LK on her wake up. Also, punish all blocked Hayates with cr.lk whatever.

I don’t find the Makoto match particularly hard myself. Seems very even and it’s rare that I find Makoto’s who make me look free, though they are out there of course. What exactly are you having trouble with mapleleafs?

I really have no idea how to play the matchup and unfortunatley i havent been able to find much advice

Also I tend to get caught by that command grab a shitton during frame traps and rushdown

I usually make sure to keep Makoto very honest and let the player know immediately that I’m not afraid to go toe to toe when she does get in.

Makoto is usually played in a very eager way. Most Makotos, even good ones, aren’t always patient. Especially vs a meterless Cody. Good to throw out a poke with a buffered mk ruffian to catch the inevitable dash in. Keep her out at first and let her get knocked down coming in, then go to work.

Much like the Rose match, using option selects is crazy important. Makoto loves backdashing. Reversal bait and stay just out of grab range.

Cody can punish Makoto with cr. LK xx whatever with just about every special tries.

Again, keep her pressure honest. Throw out a zonk during her silly pressure. Hit or miss, she will be thinking about it for next time.

gotcha thanks for the tips. def need to start using cr lp buffer mk ruffian more, such an awkward hand positioning though. Practiced it abit and i think its so much easier to just use 1 finger for both the lp and the kick vs 2 fingers un-intuitivley lol.

I also need to start practicing option selects more. Havent really practice them much to catch backdashing and i get fucked for it when i play someone good and fuck up my strings when i try osing.

Edit: the cody forums seem so lonley lol. im used to SC2 team liquid forums where shit is posted by the minute. i feel like i see less regulars than i can count on my fingers :frowning:

I find it very awkward myself and more often than not will use cr. LK xx MK Ruffian or cr. MP xx MK Ruffian for that very reason.

It’s because people are playing a lot of different games right now. No specific forum is active because the player base is spread out.

On a side note, i’m trying to come up with some alts for cody and iv been struggling. i used to ryu but i find him a bit bland now, i used to play akuma back when i sucked but his health is such a bitch at my level.

Just a couple questions to make it easier to see what im looking for

Who is a char that covers cody bad mu’s?
Who is a char that can zone and covers cody’s bad mu’s?
who is a char that can frame trap cody style?

Im not just looking for someone to cover bad mu’s but that is a perk, im mainly looking for someone with a similar play style or one that can zone while not sharing shitty matchups with cody.

Well, I don’t think any character covers all 3 of those categories. However, quite a few characters cover 2 of those.

For example, a character who can zone and covers Cody’s bad match-ups is Sagat. He would cover all of his bad matches as 6-4, 5-5 and even 7-3 (Zangief) except C. Viper, Cammy or Akuma, although all 3 of them are very winnable matches. Sagat can have trouble with all three of them. Most other zoners like Gouken, Sim, Juri, and Guile only cover so many of them. I plan to dedicate more time to Sagat myself for this reason as I’ve always liked him. Hard to do that when I spend all my time with Cody and Juri.

Good frame traps/pressure game? I guess you could go to Cammy or Makoto for that.

been messing with sagat in training today and he seems to beast lol. Now that i can fadc his FACD ultra seems so easy and does so much damage. And raw ex TU to ultra 1?

that shit cray

Its kind of a bitch that his one hit confirm link ala cr lk cr lk is 2 frame :frowning: not that bad but i can tell im gonna be pissed when i drop it for a loss online

Edit: ironically when i was more noob i was tiger shotting all day unsafley, now when i play sagat i dont tiger shot enough safley rofl

Yeah, Sagat’s hit confirms aren’t simple compared to most, but if you can land Cody’s 2 and 1 framers, Sagat’s combos are easy in comparison to them. They aren’t really too hard in the first place, just not brain dead easy like Cody’s, Ryu’s, Seth’s, etc. hit confirms.

He only has a few go to combos.

cr. LK > cr. LK > cr. LP xx finisher
cr. MP > FB > FADC > cr. MP xx finisher
F+LK > cr. LP xx Finisher

And the most bad ass combo would be:

j. HP xx HP TU > FADC > Angry Scar > Ex TU > U1…Epic combo

You can never go wrong with pocketing Akuma.

Edit : Sorry didn’t completely read your post Maple, but IMO i find that dudley has the closest style to Cody in terms of frametraps/mix-up. Also a tip against Makoto is to know the space of her dash and stay within that range and throw a pre-emptive jab, if she were to ever dash forward your jab would interrupt her dash. OS EX CU is also what I use when I have bar, i believe it beats all her options.

whats the best punish for a blocked random ex flying barcelona attack? i cant anti air it with back mp consistently… focus attack is no good since it hits 2 times or he opts to go for the throw. i cant really recreate the scenario either… with ken i used to anti air it with down hp everytime. is sliding underneath it and going for a punish doable?

Regular zonk if you have it charged, otherwise it’s depending on the position on screen: cl.HK, j.LK or nj.HP. But zonk is the most reliable option from what I know.

Cody’s weaknesses are def his wakeup, retreating, and without EX his approaching can be difficult against certain chars.

Plus (IMO), while is pressure game is top notch, his actual mixups are pretty binary. When I face a Cody there is very little reason not to just hold down back all day. Lots of Cody’s moves whiff crouching opponents, his overhead isn’t any slower than others but it is extremely telegraphed animation wise and unless it hits standing it leads to nothing. His badstone sadly has lost a lot of its power since Alpha 3 (it used to have the advantage of being around 80% more stun than a normal fireball, and in Alpha series fireballs lost damage the longer they were on screen. Plus his rocks came out higher up, so he could throw them OVER fireballs. So what would happen is you throw a fireball at Cody, he responds with a badstone. His badstone goes over your fireball, hits you for 8-9damage, Cody either recovers fast enough to block your fireball, or if he is hit by it only takes 1-3 damage. Net win: Cody.

Still love the criminal and I think he has a strong neutral game and pressure game and while he has no real “go to every time” anti air option like a shoto with c.HP/DP his anti air options are extremely formidable making jumping at him both painful and difficult. (Just ask any Adon or THawk how they feel about every Condor Dive and Jaguar Tooth getting stuffed free by a s.HK for 110damage.)

I do wish that they’d make Zonk a little safer on whiff though, thing has such short range and is SO whiff punishable lol.

Cody should win in term of footsies, people focus way too much on frame traps and pressure (which is easily countered with a reversal): play footsies, bait reversals and know your setups. That’s pretty much what Codys should do. But that’s easier said than done.

(posted this in the wrong thread the first time)
Anyone know any decent Rose players who could run some sets with me as Cody? Need match up experience.

I’m on 360 and PS3. East Coast, US.

To answer Seikano, I don’t quite know how to go about the Rose match. Can never seem to get a read on what she is trying to do or what her set-ups are. Do we have a non-meter move that will stuff/beat Ex Soul Spiral by the way?

I think I just need to put in the hours against her. She’s always given me trouble as Cody.

Well when your on we can run some sets, but I’ve seen s.mk beat it

Footsies with Cody is pretty unique, he has the largest discrepancy between his forward walk speed and backward walk speed (percentage wise) in the game. Most characters it is 15-25% slower walking backwards than forwards. Cody walks 37% slower backwards than forwards.

This combined with his terrible backdash makes it difficult to make an opponent whiff a move (unlike when you had the v-ism Yoke dodge in Alpha3) but he has that amazing focus, a solid (but not amazing) forward dash, and as we all know some AMAZING hitboxes on his normals. Not saying he isn’t good at footsies, he is quite solid actually. I just find that like Makoto, playing footsies with him is a whole different beast than anyone else due to HOW you have to play footsies. Cody walks slower backwards (significantly) than even Zangief.

You make a very good point. You’re quite right saying that. But footsies are not just about walking forward and backward trying to make the opponent whiff moves that in turn you will whiff punish. It can be picking up a spot on screen and fighting for it, using different normals in different situations. Focusing on the ground game and still being able to anti-air etc.
But yeah, you’re right, if Cody had a better walk speed he’d be so much better.

Well yeah, you’re correct that footsies aren’t exclusively about shimmying and whiff punishing, its a part but I’m not sure it is even the BIGGEST part. But a solid walk speed allows you to control positions better, and make sure you keep yourself in your ideal range for whatever you are expecting or planning. A faster walk speed is also handy for baiting people on wakeup.
