"We finished practicing now?" Cody Match-up Thread

I did a lot of tests against a lot of characters.

I found out that against grapplers if you do a jab criminal upper at the tip they cant spd it. Which is great because if they try to spd you anyway, free ultra2. By tip I mean tornado only not with the fist. This makes it an excellant poke. Also cr.strong and fw.Rh are good against T Hawk and Hakan.

It is very easy to U2 t hawks st.rh on reaction if you are buffering. and possible on his st.fierce. His st.fierce is possible to counter poke with cr.strong, f.RH, and a well place st.RH. His cr.strong is a bitch but it is possible to counter poke with your own cr.strong buffered into a CU. Using ex rocks is really good in this match up, since its 2 hits you can hit confirm into U2 pretty easily

Gief’s st.strong is beatable by rapid jabbing at the tip of his fist, jab CU also works really well to stop it. His st.rh is also very easy to ultra2 on reaction if you buffer an ultra. His st.Rh also loses to cr.strong really consistently. Be much more careful with rocks as ex green glove.

Against blanka spamming cr.jabs will beat out his balls. A blocked ball can be punished with ex ruffian or u2. If you block a ball you have to wait a split second than ultra 2 to get all the hits. You should practice that in training mode. If you get hit with a blanka ball it times it for you and you can just reversal ultra 2 to get all the hits.

All of hondas headbutts can be punished with U2. b.strong beats out his butt splashes coming down.

against guys and akumas demon flips you can just do cr.mk to go under them and punish.

Akumas demon flip kick beats out b.strong pretty consistently, RH ruffian beats out demon flips clean though. If akuma does jump back fireball when he is pretty close, as soon as you see the fireball you can EX ruffian. If you do it before the fireball it will miss because of how he floats for a second.

B.strong beats out ex headstomp and devils reverse. If you block an ex psycho you can punish with a reversal ex ruffian. If you are a little father away a normal lk ruffian will hit.

nj. jab will hit shotos that try to hurricane kick out of the corner, very easy to do on reaction.

you can cr.mk under tiger knees.

Zonk knuckle on reaction is really easy to stop all of boxers dash punches.

preemptive LK ruffian is really good at stopping dhalsims st.fp.

RH ruffian kicks stop all of juris dive kicks clean. B.strong also beats out all of her pinwheels.

B.strong and RH ruffian beats out vipers flame kicks consistently.

My hardest match up has been Ryu for sure. This is seriously aggravating because it’s been a while since I’ve had major problems with that douche.

My easiest match ups have been Zangief (surprisingly, but Ruffian Kick owns him all day), Makoto (but she’s simply not the same character she was in 3S, her power is drastically decreased from what I can tell), and Dudley.

Dudley is fierce but I’ve definitely applied the Cicada method to him. Keep him the fuck out. I like to throw rocks sproadically, use cyclones sproadically, and just generally be random. If I get the knock down and I can grab the knife I’ll take it because then the match up is decidedly in my favor until he hits me.

Alright, about the knife…

It really is good. I’m sure after time we’ll be able to tell which characters are the most important ones to use the knife on…but it adds range+damage to all of your punch attacks including chip. For any characters that you don’t want to have right up in your business (Adon, Zangief, Hakan, T Hawk, Balrog, Akuma, etc.) this allows you to space your opponent out while you stab at him and he still takes damage for blocking it. It is a great tool…just don’t get too attached to it. That pick-up animation is really fucking easy to punish.

Great info.

Specifically, the blocked Blanka Ball punish with U2 is amazing. I thought it was accepted that U2 couldn’t punish it (and I tried it in training mode with no success), but since you said you got it, I just gave it another try, and I can confirm, this does work.

At first, it seemed like the timing was so tight, that it wasn’t practical, but I think I figured out the issue and was able to do it with near 100% consistency after only 2 or 3 minutes. It seemed like timing the ultra isn’t the hard part, it’s the fact that getting the first wrench swing to hit it so extremely pixel perfect. I think the main problem with that is that since you have to delay the ultra so that it’s not reversal, when you’re inputting the ultra motion, each “back” input you do for the QCBs can move you backwards slightly, which makes the wrench more likely to miss on the first swing.

The way I rectified this (and made my accuracy for punsihing the ball almost 100%) was to immediately do the ultra motion after blocking the ball, while I was still in block stun (as if I were going to ultra as a reversal), but then letting the stick go back to neutral, and simply timing my PPP button press to the right time as Blanka came down. This ensures you don’t move yourself backwards at all while doing the motion, and the input leniency is so high in SF4 that the ultra still comes out without a problem.

Also, I guess I should note that even with the above method, I wasn’t able to do it when I blocked the ball crouching. Had to stand block to get the Ultra to punish. But that’s fine with me…this is going to help that matchup significantly.

Just a quick tip:

You can punish any shoto tatsu with RKs. Even better, if you do ex rk while the tatsu is active, they will be in a juggle state and you can follow up with ex cu for ALL hits. The only problem with this, is u have to do the rk from about midscreen away from the tatsu, or you’ll be hit out of startup.

I just tried that and couldn’t punish LP.HeadButt and EX.HeadButt with U2 unless in the corner and close to them. I tried blocking high or low but I couldn’t land it.

As for Blanka, you can actually punish his horizontal balls on block even if you blocked low with a LK.Ruffian, but it seems quite erratic. At first I thought that you had to wait a split second so the Ruffian doesn’t come out as a reversal but it worked inconsistently, maybe it’s just that the timing is tight though. But then I noticed that I could launch the Ruffian as a reversal and sometimes it would hit and sometimes it would whiff, so there’s definitely something I don’t understand here…

also i’ve used cMK to slide and stuff them kicks as well.

from what I’ve read, is ex Ruffian a good wakeup if you’re getting pressured?

Adon does not like Zonk Punch at all. I’ve been able to counter all of his specials except for the Jaguar Rising with a regular Zonk. It’s a pretty easy matchup in my opinion, just keep him the hell away from you and let him come to you. Usually he’ll try to do so with a Jaguar Tooth, which is easy to counter with Zonk on reflex. Basically, the moment you see him touch the top end of the screen, release the button and it’ll clock him good.

im havin a cunt of a problem with juri’s the dive kick is molesting me like no tomorrow where she hits you 4-5times whats a good counter to that ?

god I just lost 10 matches straight vs a very good akuma…any tips? his roundhouse is very annoying and he just continued with c. lk or c. mp in fireball.

I play Juri , So Ill tell you. The dive kicks are hella unsafe on block.

stay on the ground and block… she may as well be -1000 after it especially if they went for more than 1 hit and you blocked.

hmmm i play chris a few times lol. He wont pick up the knife vs a top player because it would be taken away from him very quick. the knife is good for zone/footies. not if you want to rush down or gain the life lead again. the knife is situational and a good player will know how to take the knife away from you. Make sure you cody game without a knife is soild before you pick it up. if not then don’t pick it up at all.

i commented on this before, ex rk will catch a blanka ball as long as its not full screen ball. like i said if your getting hit or blocking full screen balls then you need to work on your reaction time, bingo/ex bingo and rh. rk beat any ball he does. there is no reason to block a full screen ball.

in what way does guy lose to the slide?

I’m having trouble with Vegas that spam that stupid backflip. Any tips on getting them to cut that out? Or how to counter it?

i’ve been manhandling vega’s lately.

without meter, always pressure him. if he backflips, hit him with Ruff kicks. Throw rocks at him until his claw falls off.

He can do all that stuff to Blanka Balls? Sheesh, will do.

yeah, i was pretty thrilled to get revenge on the blanka who annihilated me with balls when i first tried to play Cody.

btw, can we get this thread stickied?

So this might just be the lag, but I played like 50 matches against Guy tonight and it seems like if you Bingo at Max range he can’t really punish it…though near the end my friend started doing the tatsu and that worked but I think by then I wasn’t spacing the Bingos correctly.

Anyone know if Guy has any meaty punishes for a blocked Bingo? Or is relatively safe to spam it in this matchup?

I just learned something the hard way. I was playing vs Adon and got him dizzy. I did focus crumple and then the super. The super completely whiffed! WTF?! Not sure if this is character specific or not. But anyway, if you get someone dizzy just do raw super or combo into it.
