thank you zukuu! it’s been a while i was checking this forum and you help me a lot in learning cody

How do you exactly deal with Rose’s ultra safe offense :confused:? You’re going to get counterhit by c.mp after drill sometimes if you poke so is there anything you can do in this match-up other than get some distance and fish for jump-ins or a lucky whiff punish? Drills are seriously retarded :mad:

just block. she doesnt has a overhead so it’s easy to “sit it out”. but drills ARENT SAFE to begin with, only at certain distances they become so. sadly cody has rather slow reversals. however, if she does close c.mp xx spiral arrow none is safe. lk arrow is -8, mk -6, hk -4 and ex -6. all have 6 active frames. they’ll need at least 1 or 2 whiffed active frames to make it safe against cody with hk arrow(s.lp 3 frames startup, c.lp/lk 4 frames). just get a feeling about which version she used and the distance. but again. simply blockin will do a good job.

There’s nothing safe about Rose’s offence. If she’s chipping you away with c.mp >> Soul Spiral simply charge a Zonk and knock her out of the Soul Spiral. Rose has only got a few true blockstrings and c.mp >> Soul Spiral isn’t one of them. Aside from that on knockdown, you can OS an EX Zonk to beat all her options.

Also it’s usually best to AA with HK Ruffian since she has such a high and floaty jump. Apart from that you just have to be patient and what for an opportunity to get in. You can actually WIN a fireball war with Bad Stone since she can’t use Soul Reflect against them. Therefore, you should be making her come to you, then you can take advantage of Cody’s superior close range game.

I know it’s not safe, but it’s not punishable. At least not without a guess. If she does c.mp xx soul spiral and you zonk, you get a clean hit. If she does nothing, you get it blocked and she gets a free c.mp xx soul spiral cause her c.mp is a 4 framer. So it’s a giant trade-off.

The big problem I run into is that zonk keeps going over her damn head cause she’s so short when she’s sliding. Shit’s annoying. Best jump-in against her c.hp is what? Jab or rh?

You need to react to Rose canceling the c.MP, not just the c.MP itself. Basically, every time you block a c.MP (or c.MK), prepare yourself to release the Zonk, and only do so if you see her cancel the animation. She either cancels it into a Spiral or Fireball, and you win either way. Also, keep holding down back while you release the Zonk, so that if you mistime the release, or there’s no gap for some reason due to her being too close, you’re sure to continue blocking.

Me vs Arturo

You can see this (and what I talk about in the next paragraph) in this match. At around 11:15, you can see I block for a long time, and Arturo is doing lots of c.MP. I’m blocking because I’m looking for him to cancel it into a Spiral, but since I hit him with it twice in the first round, he stopped doing it. Then he finally does it after that, and I tried to U2 instead of Zonk, and got hit by the Spiral, cause I was still doing the Ultra motion.

Also, the fact that you beat her in a fireball war can’t be exaggerated enough. There’s a lot of ways Cody can take advantage of her Fireball. From EX RK range, you can easily react to her Fireball with EX RK because her fireball is so slow, so any good Rose wont even really be trying to throw them. Also, if she gets a Fireball off from mid range, it’s very easy for Cody to c.MK under it, so that you don’t lose positioning by having to block it, and let her start pressure.

On top of all that, her fireball is so slow that in some situations, you can throw a LP or MP Rock a little before the Fireball gets to Cody and the trajectory of the Rock will make it go over the Fireball instead of trading, but Cody recovers in time to block the Fireball because it’s so slow. This takes practice though, and is still dangerous, so I don’t really use it too often. I need to mess with it a little more.

So I got a problem, everytime I play against Seth with my Cody, It seems like Seth makes a combo video out of me.

How do I approach Seth with Cody?

What are people’s opinions and reasoning behind which in each match-up? I do not have solid reasoning behind my choices in every match-up so I want to hear other’s opinion on the matter.

Abel - Hell if i know, still working on not getting slaughtered by c.lk/TT mix-up
Adon - U1: focus is risky vs adon, and it’s easy to land an occasional RH RK against jaguar tooth/kick
Akuma - U2: sweep is -9, air fireball done incorrectly is free ultra, eagle eyes, psychic or OS teleport punish
Balrog (Boxer) - U2: On reaction punish to ex anything, sweep -6 (hard reversal), bait out mid-screen dash punch for free ultra, easy to land level 2 focus, punish whiffed/blocked headbutt with bigger damage
Blanka - U2: Punish hit/block up ball, blocked blanka ball (ryan hunter tutorial), whiff electricity punish, -7 sweep!
Cammy ? U1: easy to anti-air dive kick done poorly, ex zonk fadc her counter-hit block strings easily, blocked cannon spike punishable with dash-in c.hp xx rh rk fadc ultra, lacks punishable specials for ultra 2 without big mistake from her, focusing difficult with c.mk xx drill or c.mk xx back knuckle
Chun-Li ? U2: I find her easy to counter-hit with certain setups and she is susceptible to eat big damage depending on her decision making (block a sbk, whiff an sbk), badly done cross-up command roundhouse (auto-correct U2), on reaction punish to flip kick, she is easily hit by FA level 2?s
Cody ? U2: I think cody as a character is susceptible to his own punishment. Bad reversal that?s hard to time, U2 punishes blocked zonk, non-lp CU, non-lk ruffian kick, etc.
C.Viper ? U2: OS jump-in ultra beats backdash+ex seismo, OS s.lk beats backdash + seismo, eats counter-hits often unless she suicidally throws out hp thunder knuckles, ex burning kick -12, U1 ain?t a bad choice though considering how often she?s airborne
Dan ? U1: RH RK all day
Deejay ? U2: all dread kicks -6 or worse (easy reversal), ex mgu on block is usually free ultra because if he mashes it goes -9 and if he doesn?t, usually the last hit will whiff unless he did it point blank meaning free U2 as well
Dhalsim ? U2: focus heavy match-up, os s.lk or os jump-in with U2 hits both backdash and back teleport
Dudley ? U2: Sweep -8, EX MGB -8, f+hp and hp are focusable like crazy, wakeup U2 cause you know he?s going to overhead you every chance he gets (no j/k ?_?)
E.Honda ? U2: reversal fp headbutt, big punish whiffed sumo splash, big punish whiffed fp hhs, reveral blocked super, reversal S.HK (THE LOW IS U2 PUNISHABLE!)

for Abel i use U1 because the guy has beefy health and its easy to hk.ruffian his rolls and whiffed grabs/falling sky

against Seth, i get ready to hk.ruffian his wall jumps because they often start his vicious mix ups. two or three well executed combos can finish seth in a couple of seconds, especially if he gets stunned. its kind of who can get the other stunned first. rmbr that ex.ruffian can go under his ex.booms; the timing isnt that hard but the range to do it can be fatal if he recovers in time to do the vacuum move. im also guessing you get hit by his srk when he is on wake up, so safe jump and/or bait by backdashing etc.

u2 against pretty much all. depending on the player against gief and fei long u1.

Does anybody have any particular reasoning behind gatorinnguru’s choice of U1 for most match-ups? (he uses U2 against blanka, rog and dictator tho)

What do you do against Abels U2? Its crazy.

it depends where you stand. near him => jump over him. halfscreen away => jump back. it reaches quite far but not full screen. so measure the range. midscreen: wait till he let go and jump THEN not straight after the ultra flash, he’ll most likely bait you and charge it for a few seconds. do a airborn move (no option for cody because he has none), ex zonk throw immun, same as ex cu.

Coming from an abel main, Anything that armor breaks or has multiple hits should do the trick. So Ultra2 - Zonk - Ruffians - CU/EX CU.

Or… what Zuk said as well. Depending on the spacing. Jump back or jump over. But jumping over is weird because you still have to becareful since Activation of U2 moves his hitbox backwards as well. So, you may think your jumping but in fact you’ll land right in front of him.

its combo utility i would imagine. Idk forsure. Perhaps he doesnt wanna rely on counter hits and whiff punishing alone that coincide with u2.

I’m not one to complain about things in a game usually, (except things like obvious glitches that aren’t patched, which isn’t too relevant in this game) but Abels U2 is so strange and different from every other ultra in the game. I don’t know what the developers were thinking here. I haven’t come across it too much tho, except for yesterday. As soon as the Abel got it he just spammed it out immediately and clearly won the match because I wasn’t sure what to do. That’s my own fault I supose.

EX zonk and general reaction and anticipation will do wonders, You can actually back dash his ultra to if you can anticipate when he’ll release it.

Don’t know if this is posted in here somewhere already or is common knowledge (it’s not in the akuma section on the first page i know that much) but i’ve been dabbling with option select and i found that if against Akuma you do a jumpin with OS mk ruffian and he teleports backwards you can catch him with U2 every time as far as i can tell.
Don’t have anyone to test with though so this is just based off of recording Cody doing the OS and trying to get away with Akuma, and of course it’s a jumpin so it could easily be SRK’d but thought i’d mention it anyway.

Are there any OS’s to stop blankas ex rainbow ball while hes in the corner. I tried OS stand fierce in a match and that didn’t work, perhaps i timed it wrong, idk. any ideas?
