We are the Guardians of the Galaxy - Rocket Raccoon Team Building Thread

Warning: incoming theory fighter wall of text…

I’ve been trying to come up with the best possible Rocky teams and it seems like the general archetype is Rocky/shot/pin (not necessarily in that order). Shot (fullscreen projectile cover) is more important than pin, but some assists sort of act as both a shot and a pin (e.g. Sentinel drones). Here’s a list of assists worth trying with Rocky:

Shots: Doom (beam), Ironman (beam), Magneto (beam), Hawkeye (arrows), Taskmaster (arrows), etc.
Pins: Ammy (ice), Dante (jam session), Dr. Doom (missiles), Sentinel (drones), etc.

Beyond that, I think we can safely agree that Rocky is not an ideal anchor. He has a safe dhc (spring trap), so he works very nicely first or 2nd. For the sake of simplicity, let’s assume that we’ll be placing him on point. So we have Rocky//.

The 2nd spot should have a safe dhc and the 3rd spot should be an effective anchor. Both 2nd and 3rd should have assists that meet Rocky’s somewhat specific needs. Given this much, here are some ideal candidates for the 2nd and 3rd spot:

2nd: Ammy, Dante, Doom, Sentinel
3rd: Ammy, Dante, Doom, Hawkeye, Ironman, Magneto, Sentinel, Taskmaster

Certain combinations won’t work (e.g. Ammy and Dante leaves Rocky without a good shot assist). Of course there are other options (I’ve personally been messing around with Storm in the 2nd spot), but these seem to be the most logical partners for Rocky.
Anyone want to comment, agree/disagree, or expand upon this?

Glad you guys like my Taskmaster recommendation haha.

I agree with Drowsy. I think Rocky ideally needs a pinning assist and a projectile assist. Right now, I can’t really find a suitable assist for combo extending aside from wallbounce ones, though maybe Hidden Missiles could work. Rocky’s more effective with two assists IMO.

I also agree with Drowsy’s selection of assists and I’m thinking of using RR/Sent/Dante right now. Jam Session also AAs well too, which is a plus. Still undecided on whether I want Sent as the anchor or Dante to be the anchor. I dislike Sent without assists, but Dante benefits from Drones a lot. Thinking about Hidden Missiles too and whether to add Doom…

Might be some possibilities with Spencer’s Slant Shot, though I failed to find anything last time. :frowning: But I know people were mentioning stuff to do with it. Planning to expriment with Oil Bomb and Slant Shot for possible mix-ups/resets and general extending.

What do you guys think about Tatsu assist for Rocky?

I use RR/Hawkeye/Doom and I feel Clint works pretty good with RR in respect to DHCing in or out. Super scatter is more situational but it pushes back on block, and Gimlet is great because in some circumstances you can counter punish and even if they aren’t that great you can always go for a Mad hopper from RR to DHC him out to restrict punishing the DHC in on some level and you get a few seconds of space control off the trap as a little bonus.

Additionally I think good RR synergy means good compatability with Mad hopper. There have been times where someone jumping is in on me when I have low life (so always LOLOLOLOL!) and I’d Mad Hopper then DHC into Hawkeye’s super scatter. Because they’ve pressed a button they’re going to get launched by the trap and super scatter will hit them for extra damage and push them further away and that’s all at the cost of a hit or two on Hawkeye.

I think looking at what works as a DHC from Mad hopper on hit or block (particularily what it can make safe that isn’t normally) is an important factor to consider. I think I was very lucky RR and Hawkeye seem to work pretty well together. They can DHC in and out of each other on block both ways with reasonable safety and on hit for easy additional damage from the DHC.

Of course this is without factoring in my anchor. RR dying is almost guaranteed a lot of the time and my other 2 team members are hawkeye and doom.

I think Mad Hopper in general’s something I need to look into more, it’s a great hyper.

I can’t believe no one really hasn’t tried Mad Hopper. It’s more than just restricting movement. If you have Hawkeye you literally can just go a BnB with Rocket end with Hopper DHC into Scatter and Gimlet if you have the meter. Anyone with a Hard or Soft Knockdown after their Super and you can DHC into it and go for another super. Oh yeah you can even juggle it in the corner if you want to piss off your opponent and waste meter.

Yeah I’ve been saying horizontal + lockdown for weeks haha. I’m with Duffath on this one as well, Rocky/Hawkeye/Doom just feels really solid and seems to not only cover rocket’s weaknesses but actually turn them around pretty well. I never used Mad Hopper a while ago but I’ve been getting in the habit of using it quite a lot, it deals with those annoying situations where an air approach seems impossible to defend as rocket, it also allows a practically safe DHC into Hawkeye as duffath said. Plus it is just a good space control move, they either have to avoid it or block it (giving you the momentum and free pressure) so they only have 2 options, teleport (which is kinda annoying as rocket obviously) or jump, which you can be fully prepared for and it’s not like rocket is defenseless against jump ins, just have your pendulum ready to go haha.

Exactly lol for me I use Hawkeye with Rocket and it’s really good I also use Frank West’s Shopping Cart and I’m looking into Nova’s Centurion Rush since it’s overhead and can possibly cover Rocket. I don’t use Doom sadly so I’m trying to think of ways to cover for that. I use RR second on my team and it’s not that bad.

I haven’t looked at the guide for a bit, but I’m pretty sure even if mad hopper is blocked as soon as it becomes active it’s safe on block or at least very hard to punish. The main way my friends deal with it outside avoiding it is to empty jump in and block it and the main thing I feel I should get used to is seeing that coming and using it to score a mixup. I’m not sure if it’s a soft-unblockable or anything because I don’t think mad-hopper hits low but you should get at least a high low and and perhaps even time to call an assist and teleport giving you a left/right/high/low mixup, although that actually feels like it could take a little too much time to set up. You can always do things like crossup teleport if they’re jumping onto it blocking and additionally if you have them cornered with mad hopper because RR can crossup in the corner with his teleport you can teleport and push them into it with your body.

I looked into Akuma’s tatsu and found that it doesn’t work so well with Rocky. It knocks them sorta high and stubby limbs don’t help with converting into combos.
He pretty much needs either a beam or arrows.

I think the best comps for RR as of now are Rocky-(log/spitfire)/Doom-(beam)/Ammy-(ice) and Hawkeye-(arrows)/Rocky-(log)/Doom-(missiles).

It looks like Rocky and Doom might be BFF status. Doom & da 'Coon.

Edit: Not sure why I didn’t consider this before, but the person DHCing with Rocky should not only be safe but also ideally be able to combo off Rock’n’Roll. His low damage sort of demands it. : /
That makes things a whole lot trickier…

Not really, you can just go for resets, it’s easy to get 1 million of one reset and there are probably millions of reset opportunities we’ve yet to find. Also if you have the execution, the boulder loop can turn into a ToD combo… but uhhh… I’m not even close to that, I can do like 3-4 loops lol, the timing seems to keep changing.

I think there are enough situations where an opponent will have ~100k left that warrant a DHC for the kill.
Imagine landing a combo on Zero or Strider and doing the usual 600-700k bnb (I don’t see anyone breaking 700k). It’s just not enough to kill in many critical situations.

Well most things can DHC out of Rock n Roll really, like Hawkeye’s Gimlet or Doom’s Photon Array. I guess low health characters it would be a good idea to use that extra meter, but if they have 900K+ I think it would be wiser to go for a reset and kill with 1 meter anyway, beacause a DHC probably won’t do it, unless it’s like Devil Trigger or something.

Bleh lol. Thanks, for some reason, I forgot Rocky’s normals aren’t ideal up-close.

@Tomo: did you post your resets somewhere? And @Duffath: I think Mad Hopper’s +8 on block? Not sure, I remember someone mentioning that. Come to think of it, wonder if we can score unblockables with Mad Hopper and a pinning assist? Perhaps even on wake-up?

Yup I absolutely agree.
I don’t play Dante, but that devil trigger idea has a lot of potential. Gotta hit the lab and try that out. Something like Rock’n’Roll super DHC’d into Devil Trigger, then teleport into hammer, otg combo. I guess it depends how much you can combo off the otg without using Million Dollars. Otherwise you might as well lvl3 with RR I guess.

Try Shopping Cart. I know everyone says you need Doom but West helps a lot seeing it pins them down and you can pretty much burrow in front or behind depending on the situation. But he does need a projectile or lockdown assist.

reading all these posts makes me want to sell out and pickup doom lol.

i guess im another who got “lucky” and decided to play hawkeye with RR. only difference is i have Dr.Strange 2nd with agomotto. idk if this could be considered as a pin, since it lasts 10hits long. i initially picked it as a get off me kind of assist, but now im looking at it on the offensive end.

Well after playing in a lobby with my friends I’m surprisingly running Vergil Rocket Raccoon and Strider lol Lowest health but it worked out pretty fine. I’m not tier whore I just use Vergil cause I have a think with mix ups and he DHC’s so well with Raccoon and Strider’s Vajra is just awesome in some cases. I was getting ground bounces with it and didn’t even realize. Also to mention the whole Orbs with X-Factor is just evil.

Sounds to me if you can keep your opponent blocking long enough to get it to come out on top of them then you should be looking at a nice chance to set up boulder unblockable

Hopefully the guy in the tier thread (Motempest I think?) will come and share some of the tech he was talking about. He definitely talked up strider though and had some excellent points. Maybe RR/Doom/Strider? Plus then you’d get to run the ever-popular stridoom for nostalgia heh.

Also I think a lot of people are discounting RR’s spitfire assist. The log trap is great, but I think spitfire is slept on atm.
