Well, against chicken blocking, the high/low tri-jump mix ups get defended against pretty easily. The ideal thing to do is read the chicken block and TK Hurricane. If you can do that like 70 to 80 percent of the time, you’d have no problem at all with chicken blocking, so learn how to do that on reaction.
Aside from that, it’s really just a matter of applying constant pressure with Strikes and keeping whatever block strings you have tight. Lock down assists play a big factor as well.
my biggest problem so far is trying to figure out Thors moveset and how i should be looking to “play” the big guy. before i dropped umvc3 i was playing Cap/Ghost/Sent. Caps moveset and approach are embedded in me at this point. as is the other two. but cap doesn’t have air mobility the way thor does, completely different animal. so my question what in training mode should i be practicing to get in on an opponent
For wanting to get an understanding of Thor, check the first post of themain Thor thread. It goes over everything you’re asking for, which essentially boils down to air movement, Mighty Strike pressure, and Hurricane reversals. Once you get that down, it’s just a matter of learning his hit confirms from Mighty Strike, and maximizing the damage you get from your combos, and that’s all found in the first four posts of the combo thread.
If you have any questions concerning that, find anything hard to understand, or need some tips on how to get your fundamentals down, feel free to ask.
quick question: how do I switch sides after a side exchange into Thor in the corner? tried dashing df. (and pressing H to move further) but that doesn’t seem to work all the time.
thanks in advance!
The only way to side switch that I know of is: late j.L (hits in the back) xx L.Spark, air dash forward, j.L, j.M xx M.Spark xx Tornado (or just j.S instead of Tornado if you have an assist based extension after uncharged H. Smash or a straight up OTG assist).
Hey I have a question, and forgive me if I’m asking in the wrong place or if its been asked already,
But advice do you guys have against the new bullet hell thing? You know the whole morri-doom projectile spam. I haven’t encountered to many of them and that seems to be on the rise, so when I do encounter them i want to be prepared.
Well when it comes to the Soul Fist stuff, Thor’s good for getting through it. His best option when facing the flood is to get to the top of the screen and wait it out. Super jump, air dash up, or :h: Sparks twice, fly, and two more sparks. That will completely avoid all the soul fists down below. As for the missiles coming at you from Doom’s assist, you could time your Sparks so that the missiles get destroyed before reaching you, taking essentially no damage. Or you could purposely take the hit. What’ll happen there is after Thor recovers in the air, he’ll get all his air actions back, which means he can Spark three more times. You won’t be able to fly again if you already did it, but that’s okay.
Once Morrigan has no meter that means she’s not able to use Astral Vision. That’s your opening to run down and fight her like you’d normally want to do.
But be cautious and be careful. Morrigan has some amazing rush down pressure, and Thor’s not that good when fighting off rush down pressure without select assists to give him room. Make sure you kill her off a touch. If she called missiles and they’re coming down during your combo, cut the combo short by ending it in a snap. That way the her missiles won’t combo break you and she won’t get the offensive.
If you have enough meter and the opportunity arises, mighty thunder will snipe the doom assist and clear the screen for a DHC in (unless she’s in astral)
The air dash down forward does work. The follow with mighty strike M keeps them in the corner. Or you could just air dash down instead and improvise from there
What’s everyone’s B team? If Thor needs to send for backup who does call on? Right now I’m having trouble deciding so I’m hoping you pool some ideas from you other asgardians
I’m still trying to find a suitable B team but the ones I’ve been using are Thor/Trish/Doom and Thor/Hulk/Doom but right now I started trying out Thor/Rocket Raccoon/Doom.
I use Hulk/Thor/Dormammu. Unlike Thor, Hulk is really strong at the beginning of a match, so there’s a good chance to kill. And those two do stupid damage together, with both extending each others combos with their assist. You can also play multiple orders. Hulk/Thor/Dorm, Thor/Hulk/Dorm and Dorm/Hulk/Thor are all fairly valid and get safe DHCs (unless you DHC into Hulk. Can make it safe, you have to set it up). You can also zone decently with Hulk, with Gamma wave backed up by Spark for beefiness or Dark Hole to absorb counter-projectiles. Also makes it hard for he opp to call assists.
If you run Purification, you can combo off Hulk normal throw which is a big deal. And of course, every Thor knows that Purification severely opens up Thor’s combo potential. It’s a well rounded squad that does good against chars/teams that have problems with Hulk. But all in all, it’s still too honest of a team. Not enough derp and gimmicks except for the incoming stuff and the good ole, XF Mighty Punish into Chaotic Flame that kills just about every character.
A Thor team Thor a/Felicia b/Vergil y. Rapid Slash assist gets great incoming mixups for both. Hard tags are great, front and back ground throws for Felicia are great and high enough Mighty Tornado>Kitty Helper> hard tag to Vergil>cr.H>Stinger>etc builds a good amount of meter. DHCing the first uppercut hit of Dancing Flash to Tornado causes a float on most and soft knockdown on unorthodox characters (MODOK Shuma) x-factor SSS or sword loops. With characters like Felicia and Thor you have to get used to non-ground bounce sword loops in the corner that are less lenient than the usual.
B Thor team Thor a/Hulk a/Haggar a. Of course its main pro is the 3.65M health. Lariat has good coverage for Thor, resets, and extensions. SSS is possible from Lariat>OTG H Mighty Smash>SSS. Mighty Tornado and Mighty Punish> Gamma Crush hits hard. If my opponent can’t keep Haggar away I’ll sometimes start him. I get near 950k meterless with Haggar and both assist. Thinking about switching to Mighty Smash assist with Thor for THCs w/Haggar.
Both teams aren’t the best Thor teams by any means. I feel better with my A Thor team because of more versatile anchors.
I play Thor/Dormammu/Doom and Thor/Dr Strange/Ammy as main teams, but have some trouble with people that pick point Hawk, point Vergil, and point Spencer, so if i was smart i would pick a Wolverine team to deal with those players. But im not (not into Wolverine…) so i have a Wesker/Strange(bolts)/Vergil alt and a Morrigan/Strange(EOA)/Doom(missiles) alt. Also have Nemesis/Arthur/Doom, Nemesis/Wesker/Arthur, Hsienko/Vergil/Doom and Firebrand/Strange/Amaterasu sub teams but im not that good with Vergil, Hsienko, Firebrand, Arthur and Nemesis sucks.
I like those alts Thor needs more a little more umpfh at times and different characters from the high tier echelon doesn’t hurt any to get you out of tight spots especially in tournament play. I had vanilla MVC3 a week before release and I sat in the lab with Thor almost exclusively and swore by him due to Seth Killian. My vanilla squad was Thor/Storm/Wesker
