We are gods, 'tis our purpose to set aright the path of lesser beings. - Q&A Thread

Any general question you have about using Thor’ll be answered here.

When the questions start coming in, I’ll update this post with a helpful little FAQ.

I’ve always tried to learn Thor but I’ve never been able to do well with him. Can anybody give me some good advice regarding movement and punishes? I’ve always felt I’ve been playing a slow pace with marvel compared to the more advanced players I see on streams, especially so with Thor. I hear he has good air mobility, so what sort of things should I be doing? Secondly, what can you do to punish people who whiff moves or if you block their attacks? Crouching light is seems way to slow to do anything.

Thor’s main means of movement comes from the air. Air dashes, tri-jumps, and Mighty Strikes will get you in fairly reliably. It’s often best to cover his approaches with a beam assist of some type to keep grounded enemies in place as he closes the distance. Against those who like to stay in the air, a good anti air assist would work wonders, too, but the movement all comes from those three things.

All of Thor’s grounded normals are too slow to punish whiffed moves, but his command grabs are insanely fast, and have the range necessary to do the deed. Being able to perform a full combo off of them makes them an essential asset to Thor’s game. The sooner you learn the ranges of them and the speed, the sooner you’ll be bodyin’ people for makin’ mistakes.

Check themain Thor thread for a guide on how Thor works and the best way to play him.

Should I use a pad or stick? or both?

Whatever you feel most comfortable with. The combos and resets and moves all work the same way. I personally use pad because that’s just the way I play games.

As DJ said it’s up to you really. I only converted to stick because of pad compatibility issues between ps3 and xbox. Which a lot of my friends and some of my fellow community players in my city suffer from.
A stick , so long as it’s modded, works on any system. If not, just use someone else’s stick. But this is just my view. Otherwise unless you’re hardcore with FGs and think or already do compete I wouldn’t suggest stick because of the hefty price for top quality ones like Madcatz’s TEs.

Does anyone here think we should compile a list of stuff to punish Mighty Hurricane/Mighty Punish with?
I’ve been wanting to do this for the sake of getting the most out of (in my opinion) Thor’s best asset: his special/super grab potential.

Like against Strider’s Vajira kick and Wolverine dive kick, use Mid-air XFC~Air M-Mighty Hurricane. Or blocked Spencer f+H, use H-Mighty Hurricane.

Anybody with me on compiling such a list?

Sounds good but wouldnt that be a pretty long list? i mean there arent going to be a whole lot of moves that cant be punished by mighty hurricane when you also take XFC into account. I think it would be better to ignore XFC and just focus on what thor can punish with only his grabs or if you want to include XFC just focus on more specific moves.

I only wish to include XFC because Thor is usually the character I will use XFC with, whether it be off my air combo Mighty Tornado, XFC, air dash down-forward~j.H (whiff), ground H-Mighty Strike… or to punish stuff that would otherwise not be punishable by just blocking alone.

H grab punishes wolvie dive kick anyway unless he hits you around chest level. Also vajira kick is -5 on block no jumping required. if you chicken block it its even worse so you really shouldn’t have problems with that. Id say Vajira as an assist is way worse for thor but if its really bothering you wait till they errantly call it and then do mighty tornado dhc to whatever and lol as strider dies.

isnt thor actually one of the few characters with a good way of punishing the vajira assist? mighty spark works pretty well against it, someone made a post about it with a video awhile back.

It would be good to do a mighty punish/hurricane list. I know recently I hurricane’d Morrigan out of her rocket super.

Yeah, it’d be a great idea to compile a punish list. Maybe a full list of things, and then say which ones require XFC. Maybe even say which strength of the Mighty Hurricane you can punish with. We could keep it updated as more things get discovered and such. You guys think this would deserve a new thread? I wouldn’t mind making one.

The M.hurricane is gdlike, it can punish Superskrull inferno, Dormammu Chaotic flame, Wolvie Fatal claw, and Spiderman maximum spider on reaction. I know because i have done it in real fights. Also can punish Cap America shield anti-projectiles hyper, but the timing should be precise.

I have three questions about approaching with Thor.

When’s the best time or situation to do charged mighty strikes against the opponent?

Air :h: vs Air :s: which one is better?

What assists benefit Thor the most? Like for example would a get off me assist and a projectile assist be good? Or is Doctor Doom’s hidden missile assist essential for Thor?

1- It depends on what character you’re facing, as long as you’re in a position where there’s little or no risk of that character hitting you out of mighty strike then you’re good to go. But generally its used as a new character is coming in, as an anti air, or during a SJ, just make sure not to do it too close to the opponent or in a position thats easy to hit confirm of.

2- They’re both good hand have their uses, i personally like to use air H when it comes to tri-dashing (but you have to SJ pretty high before the air dash for it to come out). Air S is better for box dashing imo (SJ + dash forward) and is amazing for corner resets.

3- The assist that benefits thor the most imo is a lockdown assist, pins them to the ground so that you can go for mix ups and a lot of them can also be used for extending combos or to help with his zoning. That being said i dont think there’s any kind of assists thats absolutely essential for thor, but i think you should atleast have 1 assist that either locks them down or helps you get in (projectile, beams etc.). A get off me assist is pretty good too although i prefer to go for projectile assists, but there’s no denying that they help out thor against the crazy rushdown characters like wolverine.

Doom’s hidden missiles assist isnt essential, plasma beam and molecular shield are both great assists as well. But he gets the most out of hidden missiles imo so if you have doom on your team i would go with HM. Thats assuming that you know how to properly use them ofcourse, as in using them as a lock down, for zoning, to extend combos and to setup command grabs.

What is Thor supposed to do under pressure by a char like akuma. I played Thor for the first time online today and found myself getting raped by this akuma that tore him apart. Im also not very good at maneuvering with Thor, does that just come with time or is there something specific i should know?

other than the obvious push blocking, the only thing thor can do under pressure is go for grabs since he doesnt have any other fast moves. If they throw out anything that is negative or neutral on block then you can go for a mighty hurricane but you have to be in range, mighty punish is even better since its invincible from the 1st frame.

Ofcourse there’s always XFC > mighty hurricane/punish if you’re willing to burn XF. But thor doesnt do very well against pressure, that being said if you’re fighting akuma and they throw out a tatsu you can push block it then hit them with a cr.H.

For those putting Thor on point… how are you dealing with the start of the round?

His walk speed is ass… so there is nothing I can do if I walk backward. I basically am instantly opening myself up to either an instant overhead, a low catching me jumping… this is before we consider 1f throws.
