Ways to improve my game with Ken on 3s

Again, this is not following the topic, since you have derailed this thread into an anti-Ken thread for whatever the fuck reason, but listen - if you whiff a karathrow with Chun, you just whiffed a throw and you are open to be punished. It doesn’t set up the c.mk into super any more than walking up and randomly doing a c.mk, since you don’t kara throw with Chun with a c.mk. That isn’t much of a setup at all, and certainly not gamebreaking by any means.

Why are you bitching about Ken use anyway? That’s like bitching about people using Magneto or Cable or Storm or Sent in MVC2… tiers are there for a reason. It’s great to use different characters during casual play, but the top tier characters simply are better and give the player using them a better chance at winning. Top tier in 3S is Ken, Chun, and Yun - of course you see an abundance of people using them. They want to win, can you blame them?

All you guys are sitting here playing fucking theory fighter. Sure, a great player will win with whatever character because of his skill, but when you are talking about higher level play, you want to tip the scales in your favor as much as possible, and one of the ways of doing that is using top tier characters. 3S is not exempt from this. Not saying that it’s impossible to win with characters that aren’t top tier (think frankie and his denjin Ryu) but I imagine you are catching my drift here.

…I could sit here and bitch about Yun and his bullshit ass GJ, but then I would be no better than you bitching about Ken in 3S.

Ki Shima - people don’t get “used” to people playing Ken, Chun, or Yun because they have so many options. That’s what makes them top tier… Yun for example, can target combo, cancel into GJ, and even if blocked, you don’t really know what is coming - low hit, overhead, tick, command throw, regular throw… you guess wrong, you eat it. I just pretty much named a shitload of options that Yun has, and sure, I’m “used” to seeing them, but it’s pretty much a guessing game. Characters that aren’t top tier don’t have a shitload of options like that.

IMO, ^this^ is the best post so far.

I agree with you Ducky Im just quite frankly sick of seeing Ken…thats like it…all it is to it…and some people here agree with me…its like oversaturation…but I totally agree with your post though.

To start.

Things you really shouldn’t do that you did.

Don’t sweep so much.
Don’t just stand over him after a knockdown, do the walk back and forth, crouch dance, whiff quick high/low moves ie. jabs and shorts to confuse him on where to block, etc.
Don’t use tatsu on the ground, at all.
Edited - Don’t shoryu everytime you wake up, blocking/throw tech if you smell a throw coming/parrying (if you can see it coming, NOT a guess parry) are you best options, a wake up shoryu here or there is ok, but don’t do it eery time.

Things you should do.

learn how to properly use, but not whore, the j. forward kick crossover/amibiguous crossover mix ups.

learn all his anti airs, and when to use which ones.

learn all of his different hit confirms into shippu jinrai.

V
low short x 2(3), shippu
low short, low, jab, low short, shippu (may be easier for you than short, short)
low strong, shippu
stand strong, shippu
close standing strong, close standing fierce (xx fireball) xx shippu
back + forward kick (2 hits), shippu on crouching characters
uoh, shippu - trickier than most… usually needs to be either, or a mulititude of the following meaty/specific range/on crouching

there’s others, but those are probably the most useful ones I can think of now. After you’ve got the execution down, learn when and where it’s best to use them (range, punishment situations, etc.)

then learn how to mix up throw games and footsies to start mind games that can set up your intended combo.

also try learning what pokes and other normal moves can be hit with a shippu on reversal.

after all that is down pat, try learning kara shoryu… it’s not REALLY necessary to Ken’s game, but it helps alot, especially in punishment situations when you don’t have meter.

edit: I bet all this has been said already, but I’m too lazy to read the whole thread.

whats a tatsu?

Tatsumaki yadayada don’t know the exact spelling… senpuu kyaku i think.

It’s a hurricane kick.

ok thanks ill be aware of that

lol @ the retards who are “sick of seeing Ken.” This guy is a new player. Do you know what that means? It means people are actually fucking playing 3S when the game (and all other 2D fighters) could be as good as dead right now. At least people are playing the damn thing and it’s still attracting new blood.

If you want to prove that your local Ken scrubs aren’t good, pick another character and beat them down.

Edit: Sorry for all the swearing lmao

Dude listen I and speaking from a tournament perspective…I am sick of seeing Ken. I do play 3s and compete in it so I still play it…it just seems there are so many Kens bottom line. I do play other characters besides Yun also BTW and do so in casuals.

Matter of fact the practically good thing IMO of all this Ken oversaturation is when I play a Ken in a tournament its like a “been there done that” feeling…I love fighting Kens bc I play them all the time…its like it will take a special one to really beat me…bc I see the same shit ALL THE TIME.

Would you rather see zero kens and 2 players at those tournaments?

DUCKY ur absolutely right, this is what gives people a sense of arrogance when using them, it feels great lol

broken characters are needed, i wont debate any longer because i kno this already

i rather see more people playing and getting good with yun than scrubby ass ken

Nah I’m glad there are people playing in general…

Hahahah I agree with the post about Yun though…lol

I’m just gettin’ into 3S myself and I play Chun. Yea, I said it.

Chun was my first character too. Then I learned Ken. Then I tried Urien. But I still hate this game (That’s right ParryAll I said it again), so I don’t play very often.

wot? i missed that part, or is that sarcasm?

Chun to me is better than Ken because theres less Chuns in the world than Kens…yes they are the most you see but still Ken is more.

If Bill Gates had a dollar for every Ken there was in the world, he’d be RICHER than he is now…lol

do you know what kind of character ken is? Ken is 3s. You can tell alot about a person by the way they play ken. Ken has no bullshit that’ll get you damage everytime so you have to work to land a hit.

btw how many tournaments have you been to? Since you came to Dallas, I think two: the regionals and the oklahoma tournament.

Thats true all you say is very true but still from the whole Phong Ken is really played out…IMO thats just how it is…

And judging from every tournament I see(online also not just in person there’s more ways to skin a cat) I just see many many Kens…too many for my eyes to take…which is like why now I refuse to play him.

QFT.

Every 3s player should learn to play Ken. Learning to play Ken teaches you the fundamental core of 3s. Every aspect of the game is involved in playing Ken. The only thing he lacks is a kara throw, and he has kara DP to make up for that.
