Ways to improve my game with Ken on 3s

the fuck…? all that i see is fanboy penis-size contest when i guy asks for advice on his game… that and "play low tier hur hur…"
first off… BLOCKING IS YOUR FRIEND. like 3 attacks were blocked in your video TOTAL. just DOWNBACK. block one of your buddy’s 4000 sweeps and super him in the ass. etc etc etc. im too lazy to find a basics thread but go here: http://www.shoryuken.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=88 and read read read. or even better… (you srk bitches will probably kill me for this)… go to gamefaqs.com and learn basic target combos and strats and whatnot.

Um… there are like thousands and thousands of Yun players who are pretty cookie cutter GJ whores. You’re not original.

Daigo didn’t change the dynamic of 3S tournies at EVO, either. I knew plenty of people who could parry that super before EVO, the only thing about it was that he did it under a great deal of pressure. On a side note, it was never really safe to spam the super for block damage anyway, since anyone who plays the game well at all will either parry the last hit and punish you or start parrying after the first set of kicks. You can’t hit confirm the super after a kara throw, wtf are you talking about?

This thread is awesome. It turned from advice to the guy for improving his game, to how hot Chun-li is, how Ibuki needs to wear some real ninja clothes, and how Ken is sexually superior to Ryu.

In addition to what Ducky told you, it was 2004. In 2003, Daigo lost to KO.

Dude listen I mean they will set it up via a Kara throw…set up the Hit confirmed Sa2…think about it…you bite Karathrows it sets up the Cr. mkxxsa2…

Daigo lost to KO both in 2003 AND 2004…

And fact remains more people after that wanna parry Sa2 after the fact…even though Im sure without a shadow of a doubt that there are people that could before…now its almost dare I say it…mainstream… I mean duh I knew about parrying the last hit yeah…but I’m talking about what Hokage said “Unleashing the beast”

Someone pointed out that people play Ken bc hes easy to use…I agree…Yun is harder to use… I dont wanna be in the “sea of Kens” out there.

You need to stop posting. Or at least stop using those annoying smilies in every single post while talking about dumb shit.

Also Dark Geese, you can’t look down on people playing Ken if you’re playing Yun. Either way, it’s unoriginal. Harder to play or easier – it’s still completely cookie cutter.

Yeah I agree totally with you. DaDesiCanadian…I just dont wanna be playing the person everyone plays…harder to distinguish myself…

When I do play I do my best to add flavor to my style…so as to differentiate myself from other people…even though in the end the majority of it may be cookie cutter, I do try to to different things then going “TOTALLY BY THE BOOK”

You distinguish yourself by winning and beating everyone else at a tourney. Who cares if you use the same character as everyone else. If you play Ken and 35 other people use ken and you win guess what, you have the best ken at the tourney. Basically its all about winning. Do whatever you gotta do.

Amen…best post I’ve seen yet by archetype…and as you see…if I’m wrong I admit it…if someone says something better than me I admit it!!!

Good post!!!

i agree its all about winning but wait who cares? maybe u will if u gain something but people want to play 3s not ken. maybe every1 should follow ur philosophy so 3s can swiftly die, just ken will bore people straight away

debating against him is as important as saying sean sucks. its not about just winning its about proving a point

“sean sux” “no ken sux”

Rivalry.

for reals man, i’m so sick of ken like you are. there are too many fuckin ken players and only a handful of yun players. why is that? ken is the scrubbiest character in the game. its no wonder everyone in the USA just whores ken and chun.

Dudley ftw

QFT.

UOH is not Unblockable it means Universal Overhead.

Exactly my point. I don’t think 3S will die because people play Ken too much, but even at the highest level of play, any Ken vs. Ken, Chun vs. Chun, or Ken vs. Chun match will automatically be boring as shit, unless you try to chip Daigo with SA2 at the last second.

Although I’ll admit, when I first started playing 3S in 2000, Ken was the first character I learned. But now it’s 2006 and we all know how boring Ken is, so if you want to get the most out of the game from the start, try someone fun like Q or Hugo first. If you eventually want to win local tournaments and feel like the only way you can do it is with Ken or Chun-Li, that’s up to you. But some players do very well in tournaments with characters like Q, Ryu, Dudley and Alex because they practice hard and refuse to scrub out. To me that’s more fulfilling than sticking to one character and spamming the same shit everyone else does.

Amen to Ouroboros and BenMonkeys posts too…just seeing Ken makes me sick practically…I HATE EVEN PLAYING WITH HIM IN CASUALS when I’m fucking around for shits and giggles…Seriously…

Everybody and their fucking momma(and AND THEIR MOMMA TOO!!) plays Ken…its like a Ken epidemic or something OMFG…

Out of 5 match vids I’d say like 4 of them have Ken in them…

Ken is worn out like J.Lo’s pussy…lol

I want examples. I’m well aware that Kuroda plays Q and Kokujin plays Dudley, but someone should give examples for the others. Outside of Kuroda, I haven’t seen anyone playing a tournament-winning Q. Not to mention that Q versus, say, Yun / Chun / Ken is A HORRIFIC FUCKING MATCHUP if you play Q ( which I do ). You can tick lp into Capture And Blow, Dash Punch High x2 if you charge partition but charge partitioning is HARD to learn when you first start playing, and learning his close MK into super which is his best and easiest damage option with meter ( in SA1 at least ) is hella harder to do consistently than picking up Ken and learning c.lk x2 xx Shippu. Telling this guy to learn Q effectively which would take a MUCH longer time than learning, say, Ken or Chun from the outset of his 3s game is kind of stilted. And I want examples of when the last time someone won a tourney with Ryu or Alex  I simply fail to see how practicing with Ken at the outset equals “scrubbing out”…you can learn more than one character, ya know.

My friend Joey McFarland plays a beastly Q…screename???

Ultimate Faust…

Here’s an almost totally unrelated tiers rant…

Trouble is, because Capcom doesn’t release new games at all, we’re stuck playing old games. Which introduces a new kind of dynamic with playing tiers.

When a new game first came out, people would fiddle around with everyone, learning the game and the engine before finally understanding why the top tiers are top and using them.

Now you have a new generation of players who get laughed at and derided for using lower tiers, and instead they’re forced to immediately switch to using top tier at the outset. Not just because they don’t want to look like scrubs, but because it’s simply impossible now to compete decently in the scene using the low tiers. So this new generation is only learning one part of the game.

3S has a very difficult cast of characters, they’re all different and well… weird. People trying to learn the other characters have a difficult time of it, because they already have the handicap of being new, and in addition to that, as cricket_egg mentioned, characters like Q have a terrible matchup against the higher tiers to begin with. Plus, new players will gravitate towards the shotos, because they’re familiar characters with familiar styles.

That’s why you’ll be seeing a lot more Ken’s.

I didn’t say people frequently win tournaments with Ryu or Alex, but they can do very well in them. An extremely good Ryu player won a New Orleans tournament last year, I’ve placed 3rd/4th with Alex and Hugo before, and you’ll see some of the best players in the nation destroying Ken/Chun with Ibuki/Dudley at Einstein’s in Austin.

A new player could easily learn Q’s basic stuff and have plenty of fun. Simply starting with knowing when to taunt x3 and linking supers from dash punches is pretty easy stuff. Ryu is also basic but IMO more fun to play then Ken, partially because all three of his supers can be used effectively, whereas everyone who plays Ken only sticks to SA3.

Why do so many people care about tiers, why not just play as your favorite character and let it be, there’s no need for elitism here. Ken is a badass dude, he’s like nearly Terry Bogard’s equal in pure awesomeness and he’s a good fighter on top of that. “Scrub” or not.

I like to play Ken occasionally myself, so if I’m a “scrub” then, so be it.
