Way to go, Jared Loughner: Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D) shot in head

“planned ahead” and “my assassination”…those notes should kill off any insanity defense then. His life is done… you know it’s death penalty time. Too bad we don’t broadcast things like that live.

Yup, just the killing of the federal judge makes the guy a candidate for the death penalty on the federal level. Even if AZ did not have the death penalty, which is does, this guy is fried. Should send him to Utah for death by firing squad

Yeah, she’s truly have bravery for standing up to that deranged nutjob after being shot by said nutjob.
As for the WBC, people just need to ignore them. HOpefully there will be some folks going to counter protest them such the Freedom Riders and the such. Although, having the WBC being wiped out by a crazed gunman would be nice but fighting fire with fire ain’t usually pretty.

I hope with the six murdered victims including the little child this warrants more than enough motivation for a judge to issue a death sentence.

Indeed. Sadly, fear does get to people in tragic cases like this and to be honest myself, as much as I believe giving up your own life to protect the lives of others, I would had frozen in fear if I was there. True props for the brave woman and men who took that bastard down. And you’re right, 9/10 times, these cowards kill themselves because they don’t have the balls to face their sins.

The one thing I pretty upset is everyone blaming Sarah Palin for the incident. Yes, she was a complete idiot for posting a Flash Image of various congressmen and their location of work with a sniper scope/cross-hair/gun and that’s distasteful but at the end of the day, what you do is up to you. Don’t blame video games, movies, politicians, etc. for your actions? The family of the victims don’t need that shit, ya know?

Whoa whoa whoa what? She did what?

Supposedly, there was an image on her website with a list of congressmen who voted against a bill she and a few Republicans supported. She had like a cross-hair next to the congressman’s names.

Can we all collectively agree as North Americans to just ignore this church? This probably would have already happened if they weren’t sick enough to put their displays on at funerals (where emotions are high already), but I have a feeling that if people simply refused to acknowledge them they would shut up.

I’ve always said that a great idea would be to wait until Fred Phelps dies, then form a cancan line about 200 feet from the funeral procession. Everybody doing the cancan must wear masks with the trollface on them, and the one at the far end will hold a giant boom box that plays “Celebration” over and over.

This isn’t something I’d actually do or even condone doing, but it’s funny to think about.

I’d do it, and I’d sure as hell condone it. Let those shittards see how it feels.

I think there are two valid responses to the WBC imbeciles.

  1. As you’ve suggested, ignore them.
  2. Do as the Comic Con attendees did, and mock the hell out of them.

These morons thrive on being taken seriously.

This guy is so fucked. He’s in Arizona, one of the biggest asshole states of America. He took a shot at a politician and ended up killing six people, including a federal judge and a little girl. He will be lucky if they don’t triple-execute him.*

(*This is when they administer enough of the executing agent–gas, injection, electrocution, whatever–to nearly kill him. They then nurse him back to health, do it again, nurse him back to health, then do it again for keeps. Yes, I just made this up, and no, I don’t think that fact will impede Arizona from doing it. This guy is in for a severely unpleasant rest-of-his-life.)

The latest update, which confirms my suspicion that this guy is paranoid and delusional.

A couple bones to pick, though:

  1. The article makes a completely unnecessary and misleading connection between Loughner’s whackjob beliefs and his atheism.

  2. If anything, this incident is shaping up to be a harsh lesson in the peril of adopting a belief system that isn’t grounded primarily in empirical evidence. For anyone who has ever passed off conspiracy theories as ridiculous but ultimately harmless, Loughner is a reminder that irresponsible beliefs can lead to irresponsible behavior.

I will quote my favorite passage from the book How to Think About Weird Things, by Schick & Vaughn.

I never read it either but I was told in school that it was a a kind of a manifesto of Hitler’s brand of national socialism. Which would argue for strong central government, social programs, against capitalism, etc… Most American’s, anyway, would think of such views as quite left (not to be confused with ‘liberalism’), no? It may be considered right i suppose, if your reference point is, say, communism tho.

You could argue the same (perhaps more convincingly), of right wing (maybe conservative is a better word?) philosophies.

What determines what/how much evidence is ‘sufficient’ (if you are not a mathematician)? How would you evaluate the worth of an individual given data point against another? Is there any empirical data to support such measurements?

Hope everything works out for all involved in AZ.

If you’re getting at what to do when there is insufficient evidence, the ideal thing to do is to suspend judgment. As for how much is sufficient, it obviously differs on a case-by-case basis and by the importance of the judgment being made.

Suspend judgement. There is no better advice, I wish everyone could do this. Now, how do we determine what affairs have sufficient eveidence? Do any? Is there even any way to tell?

Alex Jones is already spouting off about CIA mind control Manchurian candidates. I love this guy!

The guy sure knows how to milk his fanbase.

Well Obama told the Dems to bring guns to the knife fight with Republicans. And the DLC and DCCC (both Democratic organizations) ran charts with bullseyes over Republican targets.

Use of guns/war happens on both sides. Neither has ownership of it. It’s just part of our culture, any sort of contest or struggle is described in either the concept of war or a sports match.

You can’t blame politicians if someone flies off the handle and actually follows through on it.

Political violence tends to be carried out by whack jobs.

The Nazi party was the National Socialist party. Their view of government is rather inline with current American liberalism in many ways. Strong national government, lot’s of social programs, demonizing the current cultural elite and blaming them for all the problems, attacking capitalist institutions.

The difference is the Nazi party tossed into the mix a strong amount of populism and nationalism, both of which are typically conservative positions. American liberalism isn’t populist or nationalist at all.

Keep in mid though very few political groups have opinions that are completely to the left or to the right, it’s always an odd mix of things created in reaction to the situation they exist in.

The ad in this thread is for a gunfiring school. Wow.

His book selection is similiar to mines. I like the way this guy thinks, but do not support his actions. A contrast to his actions yet similar ideas would be Cornell West lectures on America.

your post implies you’re quite stupid

considering hitler was a fascist that hated (and persecuted) communists and democracy, i’mma say that mein kampf wasn’t left in any traditional sense…add in hitler’s hate towards minorities and it’s definitely not “left” in the popular american sense.

I would like to think in a situation like that where I was likely to face death, that I would run at the person because I would rather die trying to save myself than cowering waiting to be shot. I have no idea what I would do in real life since I have never been in that situation, but I have to say props to that woman who stepped up and risked her life for those of others. That woman is HARDCORE and I hope she gets honored in some way.
