Was 3rd Strike a mistake? Did Capcom go too far ahead of themselves?

3s is to streetfighter 2 what Super Punch Out! is to Punch Out!

Just took that shit too far. WTF you can jump off the top rope and kick me in the mouth? This is a boxing match motherfucka!

lol. Join date changes.

Tekken is a 3D game, so it’s a lot easier to retain old characters in brand new games.

Also, Tekken has no where near as many incarnations as Street Fighter. Tekken has what, 9 games total spread out over 15 years? Street Fighter already had 10 games and spin-offs back in 97…that’s over about 6 years time.

SF2, CE, HF, SSF2, ST, A1, A2, SFEX, XvSF, SF the movie. 10 games in 6 years, all with the usual suspects as playable characters.

I mean, come on. Did anyone expect SF3 to just be even MORE of the same?
And, if it were, would that have made SF3 suddenly sell like hotcakes?

What “people”? Back in 97, the internet wasn’t as prevalent as it is today, and there was no one “community”. Communities were scattered across the world. It’s not like there was some general “consensus” about SF3 or anything back then.

I doubt most people even laid eyes on Oro or Necro back then. You said it yourself, the game wasn’t advertised that much. More proof that Capcom’s short term expectations for this game weren’t as monumental as people like to think.

If SF3 were supposed to be a fast buck
a) it wouldn’t have been as beautifully drawn and painstakingly animated as it was
b) we wouldn’t have seen 3 versions of the game
c) it wouldn’t have been designed on hardware that current consoles couldn’t handle.

I’ve been around since 05.

This, move along peeps.

My only disappointment about 3S is that I don’t hear “Tiger” every second, but instead hear Chun Li yelling “ay!” and Yun grunting. I want my Tiger god damnit.

What does this thread have to do with story?

For me, it’s about challenging the alleged “failure” of SF3.

By the way, back in 2005 SFAC had sold 310,000 total (PS2 + Xbox) copies in the U.S. (according to Omni). It’s probably much more by now, considering it’s currenty the 712th best selling video game item on all of Amazon.com.

Sony considers a greatest hit to be a game that sells 400,000 copies.

So…is it possible that AC (which contains 3S) is in nearly as many homes as a greatest hit by now?

If someone has current sales figures, that would be cool to know…I’m curious…

this thread was a mistake and you signing up on srk was a mistake :shake:

I heard third strike makes you cry.

On a related note, why do people always claim that VF5 was a massive bomb, when the PS3 version alone apparently sold more than half a million copies world wide (according to VGChartz)? Even WITHOUT online play.

Exaggerate much, people?

i would perfer no parrying, nontheless it’s a great game once you get used to it.

OP makes the Baby Jesus weep.

Darn you, OP, darn you to heck!

By the way, OP:

Story is to Street Fighter, as Chicken is to Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup.

Allow me to elaborate for you:

Is it in there?

Yes, but there’s next to none, and most people partaking of it don’t give enough of a flipping fuck to look.

2008/2009ers should not be allowed to post new threads until after they’ve passed their SATs.

Because compared to successful games like Gears 2 which sold 2 million in one weekend and COD4 which sold more than 8 million, half a mil for a supposed AA title isn’t all that great

Ah yes - there it is.

Trouble reading? I guess you just proved your own point.

Capcom wasted to much time upgrading the same game

then released the sequel that was completely different

big mistake

Comparing FPS sales to fighting game sales in the 21st century? Madness.

In that regard, I guess ALL recent fighting games have been flops, cause none of them can compare to those numbers.

Why?

They should have stopped upgrading SF2 after HF and moved on. Them rehashing SF2 over and over again was one thing that gave SNK and Midway more of an advantage. A lot of people thought Capcom was a one trick pony with the endless SF2 upgrades.

if you try too hard to make an ongoing story, you wind up with KOF… like KOF 2000 an on the story just got worse and worse

Fixed that for you, k, thanks, bye.
