He’s constantly refining it. Sure thing.
Awesome, just awesome. Looking forward to the rest. Just when you thought you read it all, there happens to be more… I love it!
Thanks Vasili.

You’re welcome ThunderKick.
Yeah as Roogle notes, it’s a courteous way of including all readers.
If you think about it, none of the Street Fighter characters have any defined fighting styles aside from the few obvious ones (i.e: Sumo wrestling for E. Honda, Muay Thai for Sagat and Adon). They all use some sort of mixed martial art style.
Ryu’s fighting style is stated to be based on Karate though, according to his SF III NG/2I profile.
Just curious, but is “fighting stylist” the way you translate “kakutouka” (???). I always translated kakutouka as “martial artist”.
Which is prone to override by the blurb from AASFZ3 which is prone to override by the blurb for SF4 in the Master Guide.
Correct. I don’t say martial artist (or martial arts) for that one because I feel that “martial” needs to have the “bu” in there, taking a hint from DB’s Tenkaichi Budokai’s. You’ll see me saying “martial” if the term’s like budo, budosha, or “martial arts” in katakana, but not “kakuto” or “kakutoka”; though it means essentially the same thing, it’s a different essence that they chose to use as a term that I prefer to point out.
True, ZERO 3 is technically a newer game than 2nd Impact, but Ryu’s fighting style being based on Karate is something that has been consistent since Street Fighter II (at least in the Animated Movie).
My point is that Street Fighter characters usually don’t have their fighting styles defined by a simple name (like “Gourinji-ryu Karate” for example, although that would be a cool name to canonize) as most fans believe they are.
I see what you mean, since a budouka isn’t strictly a hand-to-hand fighter like a kakutouka from my understanding. But instead of “fighting stylist”, why not simply “fighter”, which is the other translation used in Jeffrey’s Japanese-English Dictionary. Its just that “fighting stylist” sounds a bit odd to me.
How do you translate the Japanese use of the English term “martial arts”? Considering “martial arts” in Japanese isn’t strictly a general term, but a specific term for western (American and European) fighting styles used by characters such as Joe, Cody, and Guile.
alternative costume for console.
Cammy looks good
I don’t like fei long but i think it woud in the future.
I hate the ones on gouken its like the same with akuma alt it better that he goes original shoto gi
I don’t use “fighter” because that can be generalized into someone who simply struggles, whether it be with martial arts or anything else.
Going from English to Japanese? Possibilities could be budo jutsu or budo ougi I suppose.
I just remembered that in Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki 2, Ken sells a mail-order course of his fighting style, which he dubs “Ken Masters-ryu Karate” (???), which Hinata is a subscriber of. I know Rival Schools isn’t exactly the same canon as the Street Fighter series., but the fact that he dubs his own fighting style that name leaves credence to the idea that his fighting style is no one’s own but his own.
No, the other way around. Particularly when a character has “Martial Arts” (???) listed as his fighting style.
If a style is dubbed a name, it’s usually felt that it’s capable to be passed down to other practitioners. The name may or may not be official, but it nonetheless owes credence to the one who’s named after it and who’s passed it down to others. Now those others can further refine it to the point that it becomes their own style to pass down. Ryu and Ken have definitely reached that point by SF3 if not earlier.
Well, if “martial arts” is in katakana, then I leave it that way. If you meant which terms in Japanese I would convert to “martial arts” in English, then I already said terms that start with the kanji “bu” for “martial” or “military.” Other than that, I’m not sure what else to tell you.
Prologue for Sakura is up now:
http://www.capcom.co.jp/sf4/begining_sak.html
Prologue 5 (Sakura)
At the instant the referee’s count call was counted over at 10, the show grounds was wrapped in a great joyous voice.
"Huu."
Sakura looked down at the opponent knocked out on the mat, she wiped off perspiration.
The lightest youngest amongst the participating contestants, furthermore being a woman the matter of Sakura having won reached a peak at once with the spectators’ excitement. For the spectators standing up in unison shouted, there was an immense uproar on the grounds.
“Alright! With this it’s 3 consecutive victories!“
Dan having rushed over from the corner smack-smack strikes her back, Sakura lightly coughed violently.
”…Couugh. That hurts, Mr. Hibiki!”
“My bad may bad. However you really did it Sakura! As expected of my apprentice!”
“What…! apprenticeship nothing…, I say no more already. Besides the guarantee for this bout has been saved now hasn’t it!? To use for the tournament’s travel expenses!”
“Yeah! Already we’re good for anywhere!”
"Thank gooodness!"
While it was precipitating about the ring behind Dan, Sakura stroked down her chest on a grand scale.
“What’s that! what’s that!, with that gloomed face! You don’t mean you’ll freak out at the battles with formidable adversaries do you?? Well, you still looking like an amateur is a reason isn’t it. However it’s alright, have confidence! For my saikyo ryu…”
“That’s not it I say!“
Sakura undoubtedly glares and, Dan stepped back.
”…Wh, what is it.”
“From when we decided on doing the tournament, it’s already 2 months!! Initially, I and Mr. Hibiki and Jimmy would divide the labor for the fighting show, we’d talked about that to raise the money we’ve collected didn’t we? Despite that…”
“Uh, yeah, that is so isn’t it, Sakura. The matches I didn’t win enou…no, I was resigning from victories for more profound reasons. From here going to the world fighting tournament, even as a joke being the instructor of saikyo ryu if I, were to lose one carelessly, my students scattered in the world how agitating it is?! To consider that you know, now even if only slightly physical strength…”
“Yeah yeah, enough already!“
For shockingly Sakura bitterly smiled.
“Mr. Hibiki’s said matters as it is were bad for even me to believe, from here on I’ll listen to around half from that. Anyway! For this occassion is like such isn’t it.”
”…caught in a verbal argument somewhat haven’t, you. Whatever, at any rate, if we board tonight’s ship as planned…”
“That’s right isn’t it. Tonight’s…, you say today’s? Today’s evening?! Mr. Hibiki, this morning you said ‘departure is for tomorrow night’ didn’t you?!”
“Hmm? Oops, that’s right wasn’t it…“
Rummaging through his padded undershirt he searches, Dan takes out a become crumpled ticket.
”…As I thought, today isn’t it.”
"Eeeh, it’s now already evening!! What time is it?? Just a sec, show me the ticket please! Have to hurry!"
For Sakura, snatched the ticket from Dan’s hand, looked at the clock at the grounds.
“Uh, oh! Jimmy! Hey Jimmy, where are you? We gotta go!”
“Besides that, luggage! Mr. Hibiki, where did you set aside the luggage??!”
"Oh no! The guarantee for here hasn’t been collected has it!"
With the appearance of thoroughly not hearing Sakura’s questions and the like, for Dan the guarantee, while crying out for the guarantee a crowd of people was disappearing. Without time to be flabbergasted, hurrying to the grounds’ exit while beginning to run, Sakura mutters “Repeal of previous remarks!”
Absolutely enough!
Matters with Mr. Hibiki, are distrustful so absolutely enough!!
Good stuff. More to come later today.
That’s more or less my point though. Ryu and Ken’s fighting style may both be based on the Gouken’s teaching, but they personified their style so much to the point that they might as well be distinct style.
Of course, establishing Hinata as a subscriber to Ken Masters-ryu Karate was most likely done to explain why her Special Moves in the game (Rengekiken, and Shouyouken) are similar to Ken’s.
For those curious, IInchou, the Chairperson, was a subscriber to Saikyo-ryu before she switched to Masters’ style as well.
All About Capcom acknowledges that Martial Arts (in katakana) is indeed a general term, but clarifies that the use of the term in the Street Fighter series and Final Fight Revenge refers specifically to the contact-style martial arts developed by the U.S. Military. Didn’t Cody used to serve in the military (I know the character art for the original Final Fight had him wearing dog tags on his collar)? That definition (military martial arts) would make sense in the context of character from other games like the Ikari Team from KOF? But what characters like Terry Bogard and Sarah Bryant, who don’t have a military background?
On a related note, I heard that in the second volume of Ryu Final, Gouken explains to Ryu that their martial art school did not have any name in order to maintain the style in secrecy.
AAC says particularly or especially, rather than specifically, meaning it doesn’t have to refer ONLY to the US military regimen, but it does much of the time. That way it’s found even in the context of fighters like Karin, even though she hasn’t been in the military. I’m not aware of Cody ever having a military history.
Well, their martial art is rooted in an assassin’s caliber style after all.
As promised for more info later today, drum roll please**
