Let me clarify. I didn’t say that Gouki’s eyes glow mean nothing. It’s an indication of the kind of strength he has. And they’re not always red. In SFZ2 he has black eyes, while in SF32i he has yellow eyes.
We call the character SnH Ryu because Evil is a bad translation.
Actually, the fact that Satsui No Ryu has been depicted with glowing red eyes is further proof that this aspect has nothing to do with being demonic.
If I’m not mistaken I’ve also seen Vega with glowing red eyes in the EX series artwork. Well, you can argue EX isn’t canon (Doubt this applies to artistic interpretations, but eh) and Vega can be classified as being some what supernatural with his soul being able to transfer into Rose’s body and some statements he makes in Alpha 3 like, “I’ve lived for generations in different bodies” and things like that. I’m not quoting directly… those SFA3 statements scared/confused the crap out of me at first…
Sorry, so it turns out that it was 2i, there’s not a big difference. The point was that his eyes aren’t always “glowing red” as you have so vehemently insisted. Also, Berias is right, play the older Alpha games, his eyes have a very empty look (I think that it looks pretty cool). I hate repeating myself, but the eyes are supposed to portray his immense power, not a demonic influence.
All argueing aside, I do consider Gouki to have red eyes as well (at least most of the time). I just interpret they’re meaning differently from you.
Don’t know, don’t care. People read and translate things differently all of the time. It’s really not a big deal.
Just an estimation:
I’d say around 55-60+ during SF3 (1998-ish).
I don’t have any specifics, but I assume that Gouken was around 30 years older than Ryu (who knows? it could be anywhere from 20-40 years between the two so I’ll just throw out a number). Since both Gouki and Gouken trained together, I’ll also assume that Gouki was nearly the same age. Considering the fact that Ryu was in his early 30’s during SF3, you do the math. I personally think that he was in his 60’s, but he could be either younger or older.
Because he is younger than them. Goutetsu was his teacher, and Gouken is his older brother. Gouki also seems to have aged pretty well, not unlike another superhuman SF character (Oro).

It is Shin Gouki who has yellow glowing eyes in 2i.
If you verify every artwork since the alpha series started Gouki is always portraid with red eyes.A2 artwork also, during the game well it has that empty look your talking about, but he’s always been portraid with red eyes.
Dude.
In 2i, True Gouki has yellow eyes. Not red. That’s all there is to it.
Since that’s what the character “really” looks like, it should override an appearance of “player” Gouki in the same game. Generally I picture him with red eyes also, but this has not been consistent in every game.
I agree with Tiamont lets get to another more interesting topic… like the Tiers for Third Strike! Wouldn’t that be dope. Yes this is a plug , but serious can we talk about something other than Gouki’s eyes.
Tiers for Third Strike would be difficult, but you can just use Saiki’s Top Tier list since it’s all the characters in there most current state. So, it’s something like:
Tier 1 - Gouki, Gill, Oro
Tier 2 - Ryu, Q
Tier 3 - Ken, Urien
Tier 4 - Chun-Li, Hugo
Tier 5 - Alex
Tier 6 - Everyone else, except -
Tier 7 - Sean - Hey, he seems pretty darn weak. I think he’s stronger than Dan but since he’s not in this game, Sean’s listed here.
the reason hugo is so high is because he survived the shin shoryken, right? even though that is quite a feat, personally i’d but him one tier lower, with alex. its not like hugo won the match, and pure muscle is not the only measure of strength.
also, what it is about Q that puts him so high? or is it just speculation?
Q is just speculation (Saiki specifically listed him as mostly just hinted more than anything else). That whole body made of steel combined with his wandering around tournaments and a whole bunch of other stuff such as the graphical representation of him (he can grab you then self-detonate himself Oo) contribute to his implied ranking, I imagine.
Going by factual relative comparision events, it’s nearly impossible to rank Q anywhere since as far as I know, he hasn’t officially actually FOUGHT or interacted with anyone in the storyline…
I’d rather put Hugo in Tier 6. Isn’t he just one of those big wrestling guys in Final Fight? While being able to stand a shin shoryuken gives him remarkable stamina, that doesn’t make him any better of a fighter. It just takes longer to wear him down. And he did get beaten around by Cody and Guy.
I’m glad that people are adding there two cents. Now he is my Third Strike Tiers.
Tier one
Gouki, Oro, Gill
These are the gods of the Street Fighter universe. They are what other fighters are measured by. I can’t really say who is the strongest, but it would be dope to find out.
Tier two
Ryu
He is the strongest of the rest. He is not quite a god like the top tier, but he is close. By Street fighter 4 I think that he will either be the equal or higher than the top tier characters. That’s is they ever make Street fighter 4. (Cross your fingers)
Tier three
Ken, Urien,Q, Alex
These are the strongest of the mortals. I had a hard time putting Q in a teir but by looking at his fighting style and supers I decided that this would be the tier best suited for him. I know people may not agree with my placing of Alex, but he did when the Street fighter 3 tournament. I know Gill may have held back, but I still think that Alex has to have at least the same power and skill as people in this group.
Tier Four
Chun li, Hugo
Chun li is here becasue of her skill and experience and Hugo for his strength and he did take a Shin Shoryuken.
I’d say Hugo is the same level as Alex, not above or below. Hugo might have the stamina to survive a SSRK, but he doesn’t have the skill to beat Gill, and vice versa.
I think Urien should be higher than most of you have him. He’s not as strong as Gill, but I don’t believe he’s weaker than Ryu unless someone has a lot of evidence.
I’m pretty sure the only really known character he fights is Chunli, mainly because he’s her mid-boss and is pretty important to her particular storyline of trying to find the missing kids. Plus, his dialogue with her alludes to Shadaloo when he mentions her legs helped bring down ‘that organization’.
