Nothing new as far as I know. The announcement for the first book to be coming soon has been on their site since January. I want to say books will finally start coming out for sure by October Street Fighter month, and that the delay’s because they’re readying more than just one book to be released, but I dunno, just hoping to see sometime Tiamat and Saiki and whoever else for the plot guide was acknowledged in LRG’s publications.
aerialgroove re: CE art
I’ve only ever seen that artwork in reference to CE. The only way to know for sure is if there’s a pre-Mook with that artwork dated between WW’s release data of 3/91 and CE’s release date (12/91? 1/92? Can’t remember and I don’t have AAC in front of me to check). I suspect that it was made for CE specifically though: Note that some characters (like Ryu and Ken) aren’t as ugly as there are in the WW artwork.
vasili10- may the references have been Final Fight ones?
Shall I repost the White Wolf bios while pointing out the most absurd part of each?
TS, which references do you mean now?
Hcparker, you had posted those bios before? Are they gone now? It’s up to you; I’m sure we’re always in the mood for a good rofl.
Never posted whole bios before, just bits and pieces of them.
See, that’s the problem, lot’s of the old WW artwork is not ugly at all, but most of the artwork often presented in video game magazines is ugly. If you take a look at the complete file though, you will find lot’s of very well drawn old artwork, including the SFIICE pics or SFIICE COLORS at least (the SFII characters already had these alternate colors, remember?
I see. Again, it’s up to you. Having the White Wolf books I’ve read them all front to back, so now I need to get and read LRG’s books once they come out. And I need to keep moving along with the harder stuff, Ryu’s Dash account’s almost ready, should be up in another day or so.
aerialgroove:
Well, I guess not all of the artwork is ugly. But as you said, a lot of the “official game art” type stuff, the stuff that was released to mags representing the characters, could be pretty blah. I definitely think they changed Ryu and Ken’s look somewhere along the way (Ryu’s new look was reflected in his CE in-game portrait, though Ken’s new non-gonzo look didn’t appear in his portrait until SSF2, though it did show up in his CE/HF ending).
> SFIICE COLORS at least (the SFII characters already had these alternate colors, remember?
No they didn’t. Those alternate colours didn’t exist before CE. In the arcade WW glitch where you could fight Ryu vs. Ryu, both Ryus were white. The only time you saw WW characters with alternate colours was in the SNES version, and that came out after the arcade version of CE.
I think I’ll post the interviews and qoutes given in the main book by the characters. You know what I’m talking about right?
Feilong saying, “You cannot define the spirit of the dragon!..” for instance?
Those kinds I’m assuming?
Oh, didn’t know that. I guess I’ll list it as CE art then. I wonder how old Akiman was when he did the “ugly” art.
Yeah, the one Gouken quote is pretty interesting.
He’s got two in the main book.
The one where he’s refers to his art as a living art and refers to inferior versions as rotting trees.
The Bison quote about how he grips the world and it trembles and the seeming response from Ryu printed below it are kind of funny in retrospect.
Worst responses are Deejay and Guile both of whom sound VERY much like a stereotype.
Real quick since the CE artwork is being discussed.
I believe the following comes from the old Gamepro guide for Street Fighter 2 Turbo, the one co-written with James Goodard.
Not sure if it’s accurate or where they got the info from some bear with me.
-Sick of people calling him a Ryu clone, Ken altered his Dragon Punch. Trading power for range (explaining why his Shoryuken had a larger range horizontally then in the previous games). He also pumped up his foot speed for his hurricane kick. Some people have said that Ken has become too brash for his own good.
-Ryu faithfully practiced the traditional moves of his style. Through this he was able to further his fireball (explaining how his hadoken got faster and he got less lag time than Ken does). One day he went down the ocean where a large storm was coming ashore. As the storm broke, he executed his hurricane kick and in this way he learned to fly higher.
-Zangief also learned from mother nature as he was picked up in a storm once, spun around and tossed to the ground where he laughed (I think they’re saying this is where he got the inspiration for Spinning Pile Driver from).
-Guile was also mentioned as throwing everything in his life, his family, his friends, his career, for the sake of revenge.
Again, not sure where those come from but seeing the art and discussion around it jogged my memory about them.
The first two come from Gamepro’s SF2 Guide, the book right before their SF2T guide you referred to. The others I know I’ve read before, but can’t find where right now. Gouken’s sensei responsibilities quote is interesting too.
For those that don’t know what we’re talking about…
*Fool! I but clench my hand and the world trembles! My agents are everywhere, longing to do my bidding, fighting against each other for the right to serve me. You think you can stand before my Shadaloo army? Fah! And even if you somehow defeat my servants, you will still have to face me. No one has ever defeated me – and no one ever shall.
–M.Bison, Lord of Shadaloo*
No he’s not a stereotypical game villian at all, is he?
*Words cannot protect you against the inevitable hand of justice! Fight whom you will, corrupt whom you may; you will not stand before when I put an end to tyranny.
–Ryu, Grand Master Street Fighter*
A little bit better, still not in character for Ryu as we now know him.
- To master the dive you must first understand the nature of the Hawk. You must seek to master its grace and dignity. You must understand its beauty and respect its prowness. The Totem is a generous one, yet it is one that is never idle. Th Hawk is a great hunter. You too must become such a hunter if you hope to understand the spirit of the Hawk and master its dive.
–T.Hawk, in a lecture to his students*
The obligatory PC new challenger quote.
*I have taught you the secrets of Shotokan Karate and you have become adequate warriors. You are now carriers of living art of Shotokan Karate – for all martial arts are living arts; They grow and change and conform to the needs of each generation of Sensei and disciple. As with all living things, some generations can be stronger or weaker than their ancestors. You must ensure the living art of Shotokan never becomes weak.
For our style to live on, you must one day share its secrets with others as I have shared with you. First however, you must prove yourselves fit to carry on my name and style of Shotokan. Go into the world and test your knowledge by fire and by blood. Should you survive long enough for your own beards to gray with age, then you will know that your Shotokan Karate is strong; then you will know that you are worthy to teach the art.
But if you should fall from the path, do not disgrace me by teaching your weak version of the art. Better that the style of Shotokan Karate should die than become a tree that appears great for its age but is rotten and weak inside.
–Gouken to his students Ken and Ryu *
Not sure if Gouken wuld approve of Ken’s marriage…
*You cannot define the spirit of the dragon! When I kick, the dragon spirit is unleashed within me. It lifts me into flight and and I feel my chi rush to my kicking feet until the very air explodes in the dragon’s fiery anger.
–Fei Long, in an interview with Kung Fu World Magazine*
No it’s not obvious who he’s supposed to be at all.
*Sure, some days I’d ask myself if it was worth it. Every day bustin my head on the tarmac cause I didn’t flip all the way around in the Flash kick. I’d kick up over my head, and then gravity would grab me like I was pulling a 4G climb in a F-16 and slam me headfirst into the concrete. My buddies would laugh, but I just got up and practiced it again and again, and again. My buddies don’t laugh now except at the foolboys who come to the airbase thinkin’ they can take me on – take me and my Flash Kick on that is.
–Guile, in an interview with Fortune Soldier Magazine*
Ah, so his hair was really a helmet for him than?
*Look Mon if you want to make it on the Street Fighter circuit, you’re gonna have to do more than just punch or kick. Even that jammin’ special move you got there won’t finish off the bad boys like Zangief. Ya, mon, I know what I’m talkin’ about. It’s like music. Ya don’t go singing one note an’ call it music. Ya gotta put the beat together. One note after another, then yer jammin’. It’s the same with fightin’. Ya gotta put the moves together if you want to be chief.
–Deejay*
Yeah, that’s uh…Deejay for you.
It also specifices Deejay’s Max out as sound like intense amplifier feedback when released.
With two weeks until his birthday, here’s Ryu’s Dash account.
Ryu from Gamest SF2D
To Live the Struggle Within
A man constantly walking wandering throughout the world aiming at the true fighting style, this is all of what Ryu is as a human being. This is with exception from his current telling to words, and also not expecting to be discovered…
That day…Ryu taking in the sunlight amidst the 1 man he’s opposing. That man’s name is Ken. From the time of childhood of sleeping and eating together, the man who practiced moves under the same master.
But now with the surroundings of the 2, not reaching out some sense of being wrapped up in a limited tense atmosphere. So to speak, just the place taking the form of a queer space. Of course, now it doesn’t mean that it’s become a well-matched showdown spot. However, this showdown is always that difference which the 2 of them realize with frequent bouts. It is Ryu aiming at the “true fighting style” taking on Ken his good friend, again defeating yet not becoming enemies as it is.
The match being indeed an advancing on par, from both sides as opponents up against each other as storms their fists are fired out. But in conclusion, the two men cannot reach at the right and wrong within. The consequence of one’s own possessed power run out, entirely by sheer strength, already which one will remain with willpower maintained.
After that, the 2 of them finish up with their parting replies “we’ll meet again having become stronger together” joined by a firm promise, each to the direction he pleases and leaves.
From that Ryu’s journey for the “true fighting style” began. For some 10 years he’s parted from his friend and rival Ken, in Japan, running around in the world, crossing fists with all fighting move users. Once at a street corner, and once again at a back alley, everyday the fight repeated he stood above the brink of death.
Standing up to breaking the deadlock with everybody, they were formidable enemies. However Ryu on the surface never to say makes light of this, whether it’s feeling listless from wounds or also the struggle continually he reaps victory. But, Ryu at any rate cannot be conceited of his own “true fighting style.”
As a Fighting Stylist, as a Man…
And so time flew past. With Ryu returning to Japan, repeatedly referring to answering his own questions again his self thrown into an intense pursuit of knowledge. “Last time’s journey for myself really, what was gained?” “What were the fighting moves I picked up myself?”…thru days and months earnestly he irritatingly brought out no answer and, his own disappointing defied self-abhorrence, for Ryu his own body taunted while repressing the torment, only a single discipline the discipline piled up.
The agonizing pursuit of knowledge continuing inside, unawaringly Ryu’s memory of Ken’s appearance was becoming such that it surfaced. Days of childhood, the man with whom he himself walked the same path of martial arts together everyday, Ken. Whichever painful matter was met, that man the eternal rival there as time able to renew as a spring. Of course his self now was granted the answer with no choice but the guy!
From the seeming feeling Ryu’s pursuit of knowledge intensely increases still more, takes moves to be polished.
The invincible dragon “shoryuken”, the yelling bullet “hadouken”, the raging billows of rotating succession “tatsumaki senpuukyaku”…and also new overhead throws from Japan’s judo, mastering shoulder throws, the linking of moves and also the polishing has begun.
Just about everything feared to be finished shown regularly in Ryu’s heart, Ken after going overseas for warrior training was unexpected. In time Ryu set aside to write his worthy opponent a challenge letter and once again parted from Japan. In order for his rival and the promise carried out, and for becoming the true fighting stylist. But before the bashed gate to the reigning world champions, the name “Ryu” will be given notice in the world not becoming forgotten. To accomplish it for a long time being separated from the fighting sites will become as the opposing trial for oneself, also up against the best lifelong rival would be from becoming the minimum limit’s courtesy.
Ryu’s journey aiming at the “true fighting style” now, it has once again started here.
Next time, Ken. Thanks as always for reading minna-san.
woow i got the feeling that this is like WWE …
