Didn’t I tell you to chill the fuck out? I’m not taking sides here nor dismissing or ignoring anything. Sheesh. I’m awaiting the sorting out of the Goutetsu/Gouken/Gouki situation and not arriving at any conclusion beforehand. It’s just that what Vasilli says right now is pretty much what EGM said years ago when Super Turbo and Gouki first appeared. And how often does EGM turn out to be right?
You talked to Saiki back in the gamefaqs. Great. I’ve been involved in SF storyline scrubbery long before that, even before I started talking to Dash no Chris when I started this whole mess with by bringing the “Poison is a man?” crap to the SF masses on alt.games.sf2, and even that was in, what, early to mid-1998? Can’t remember. All Saiki did was confirm a lot of what I knew already (though of course he did reveal a lot of new stuff to me, mostly anything to do with SFA3).
Vasili:
I don’t believe Clay knows anything beyond what we know on his own really. I think Clay just used to talk to Saiki and participate with the previous SF storyline threads, much like the rest of us. I don’t think he has access to/can read JPN sources or anything like that. Aside from you, the only other people who are known to speak Japanese and quote actual sources are Dash no Chris (who does it 100% of the time, and I swear he’s pretty anal about it, but in a good way) and Saiki (who does it part of the time, but not always).
EGM was correct for many parts in their summer 1994 Ultimate Guide to Fighting Games covering SSF2T, MK2, Virtua Fighter, etc. In Gouki’s section they printed at one point “…according to Japanese sources…”, they even made a decent translation for Gouki’s speech that was used again in SFZ, SFZ2, and SF32I; and they even expressed their regret that the whole speech was cut for the US version of the game.
So what you’re saying Ultima, is that this post of Clay’s is just a compiling of info he received from Saiki?
I had a notion that it was his own input, because he was credited separately in the plot guide for his “…bits about Ryu and Akuma…”
Well if that’s the case, I’m still at a loss from where whoever got it. This and the belief that Gouken and Retsu are friends, still elude me thus far.
Yeah, I was kinda’ wondering where Saiki heard/read that. That’s never been mentioned in any of the websites I’ve been to. It’s not even in AAC, right?
Yeah, I have that guide. That was a source of info for me too. I figured it was mostly correct, just with some slight misinterpretation on EGM’s part of Gouki’s actions (y’know, like that whole “Gouki is a demon” misinterpreation because of how westerners and the JPN treat the word “demon”).
And while I could be wrong, yes, I believe that Clay merely restated stuff that Saiki had said much earlier. It may be that Tiamat heard it first from Clay, but he most likely got it in turn from Saiki. It’s possible he found info from other sources like I did (e.g. Poison’s true gender I found in a random Hugo FAQ on gamefaqs, one that evidently no one else read since I was the first to ask about it, thus opening that huge hornet’s nest which was confirmed by Dash no Chris and one of the big SF nut at Gamefan whose name escapes me at the moment; also, other places that are no longer around like Dark Lancer’s old arcade page had tons of storyline info that I found before I heard it from people like Saiki), but I’m not sure.
re: Retsu & Gouken
Hmmm… Now, I know I’ve read this somewhere, but I can’t remember where. I know it was before the plot FAQ was created, cause when I read it there I said to myself “Yeah, that’s correct”. But as for where I read it, far less if it was reliable or not, God alone knows. But I know it’s not something that I heard recently…
Hey, lots of luck… I PMed him and E-Mailed him a while ago, still no response, he’s prolly beta testing the new Fist of the North Star game or something, he’s really busy…
You vasili10. I forgot to tell you, but Ryo(RC’s webmaster)must have a new e-mail address or something, 'cuz the one I usually e-mail doesn’t work anymore. Plus his new e-mail address isn’t shown anywhere on his website. His website has a new url also.
I noticed that as well. It’s okay though, the book I was asking about is on the way to me so the question’s not really necessary anymore. Can you provide his new url if you know it? Thanks Golden Dragon.
Sorry, I forgot about it, my Perfect Guide book has no special sheet or anything that I recognize as such. I don’t want to hype about any specific book since it’s only a 75% chance that I will get them within the next 20 days but prepare yourself for some old school Capcom fighting stuff.
Btw, could you help me with something? Many many many many pages ago I mentioned that Sho/Ginzu from ‘Captain Commando’ is a Bushin ninja. It turns out that ‘Lives of SF’ mentions it too in Guy’s profile/bio section and it seems to give a more in-depth explanation of the relation between the 2 characters(Guy & Sho). The translation provided by tan didn’t make much sense, so I was wondering if you could translate it for me when you get the chance?
Well originally we’re led to believe that Goutetsu by himself developed his style anasatsuken and that his version of the moves developed (no matter which moves they maybe) were best exexmplified by Gouki’s version of the moves. And that Gouken disliked the killing aspect of the style and created his own version of the moves to teach Ryu and Ken.
Now it seems that may not be the case after all, right?
Everything that you said above is still true. What I’ve found contradicting concerns the shungokusatsu. Clay/Saiki have stated that it was the fourth of the backbone techniques of Goutetsu’s ansatsuken (the 3 being hadouken, shoryuken, and tatsumaki senpuukyaku), and it was taught to both Gouken and Gouki. What I’ve found so far is that Goutetsu spoke about the shungokusatsu, but not taught it, and knowing what it does to its user, I doubt he knows it himself, much less created it as currently held by Clay/Saiki.
