Well, I’ll point out what differences I can all the same. For me it’s great since I can’t read the original but I can only speak for myself.
I can’t really read the original either, but that’s what we have our old translations for. I don’t think the translation is much at fault, it’s just that the original book didn’t have much in-depth data to begin with.
It seems that the translator isn’t too well versed in Capcom knowledge… just a feeling I get.
Actually, it does, kinda. Look at the character section, at the side of each page near the bottom is the character’s name. For the characters who had their names changed the original Japanese name is also given. Such as “Balrog (aka: M.Bison in Japan)” etc.
Also, in the ending section, they used Gouki for the translated version of his Vs Bison ending in ST.
On that note, Akuma’s ending is the only one translated from Japanese, the rest of the endings are the American ones.
Yes they are. On the Character Profiles check the orange strip on the side of the page. You can clearly see -
BALROG (aka M.BISON in Japan) pg. 198
VEGA (aka BALROG in Japan) pg. 199
M.BISON (aka VEGA in Japan) pg. 201
AKUMA (aka GOUKI in Japan) PG. 202
CHARLIE (aka NASH in Japan) pg. 207
JUNI (aka YUNI in Japan) pg. 220
Juli (aka YURI in Japan) pg. 221
Sorry if I came off as a jerk because that’s not my intention, I’m just being thorough is all. Back to reading…
EDIT: Sounding like a jerk and was beaten to it, DOH!
Aw, man. All you guys got da’ book?! Lucky! I was gonna get it, but I fell asleep. Someone shoulda’ woke me up. Stupid sister.
Well at least you still talk to each other. Of my two brothers, I haven’t seen or spoken to one of them in 2 years. Well, he hasn’t spoken to anyone in our family for a long time…
Vasili10 - Remember when we were talking about Ingrid having here theme played in the backkground during CFE as Roll having this in MVC2 being the only other time? Well, as Eternal Challenge points out, (someone also said it here earlier I believe) that the first Capcom game to do this was actually SF Zero. When Ryu and Ken fought Vega in the Japanese version, they played “The double platinum hit ‘Itsoshisa to Setsunasa to Kokorozuyosa to’ (Loving, Sadness, Heartened Feelings) by Ryoko Shinohara and Tetsuya Komura…” and this is the same song played in the SF2 Animated Movie when Ryu and ken fought Vega.
And just so this post doesn’t become “I READ THAT IN THE JAPANESE VERSION DUMB ASS!” I wanted to point out that in the relationship chart the Arrow that points to Oro and Akuma/Gouki reads, “great martial artists who know each other by reputation.” It doesn’t indicate that the two have met or fought ever like the Plot Guide indicates. Vasili10, can you double check what the Japanese version says?
The Plot Guide says: “Sakura is Ryu’s number one fan (probably after seeing him in the SF1 tournament).”
US SF Eternal Challenge says:
Pg. 171 - “Sakura saw Ryu fight while he was in Tokyo and she decided to become strong like he was.”
Pg. 216 - “On her way home from school one day she witnessed the fighting prowess of Ryu and became obsessed with his skill and power.”
Another interesting tidbit. On page 271 they talk about Ryu, Kwn and Chun-Li on how they are the three charactes that have appeared in each SF series. For Ken, it says “Ken trained hard in order to decisevly defeat his rival Ryu at least once. After that victory he finally married Eliza.”
So, is it possible Ken defeated Ryu during SF2? Ryu would of won in SF3 Third Strike later on anyways keeping the friendly rivalry. And even if he lost, he could of still wen after Gouki in SF2. Ken might of dropped out after the win, like he dropped out of the SF3 Tourney when Ryu dropped out.
More Coffee…
Correct, it didn’t have much in-depth data, it just tried to cram everything up to speed with Zero 3 and 3S at least that’s what its relations chart did.
Not so much the translator’s fault, but more the original writers; supporting what Saiki had said that there’s no one in Capcom of Japan right now who remembers the entire story.
Xillatem- that’s interesting that only Gouki’s ending was translated. I’ll need to specially look at that once I get the book.
sano- I’ll check Gouki & Oro again in the chart. About the songs though, both MvC1 not 2 (Roll) and CFJ (Ingrid) have actual vocal themes played, and SFZ has only the instrumental version of the battle theme from the movie played. They’re all still cool.
Okay! Amy and Datta being close friends is in the book, as is Blanka ‘evolving’ to be green like you stated before. Still reading…
And thus far for me the highlight of the book is not the storylines since it’s kinda short. It’s not the Artwork either since I ahve most of it (I had most of it before I got the Japanese Version, LOL!) But it’s A)The History of the Games in the All Work Introduction Chapter and B)The Interviews. That alone makes it worth the purchase. Oh and a sleepless night…
In Hugo’s Bio it only refers to Poison as “his manager” twice, but in the History section where it discusses SF3 Second Impact, it says that she taunts her opponent. So no, this book doesn’t out Poison.
The rest of the CFJ bios from Capcom of Japan’s page. I’ve decided to interpret Ingrid’s powers as just mysterious abilities; I’ve been seeing the kanji combo for “ability” too often now for it to be coincidentally once read as “noh power.” Enjoy minna san, and watch for Rolento’s story from the 15th Anniversary book next. Laters.

Thanks a lot! Mukuro = Oniwabanshu? The game already made me like him more than MVC2 Strider - better controls - but this settles it, he’s the man!!
Thanks a lot. I’ll spread this along with the other SF CFJ Bios to my CFJ Fan buddies at Gamefaqs and snk-capcom, giving you all the credit of course!
Thus far neither the word Shotokan or Ansatsuken show up it the book, and that’s how they escaped that hurdle, by not putting down character’s Martial Arts Styles.
And finally -
In Juni’s section it mentions how she analyzed Gouki’s Data, yet another reason why she’s a strong Doll
Elena’s father sponsored the SF3 Tourney.
Just like Golden Dragon said, it talks about Twelve becoming sentient.
Oh, in case anyone missed it, one of the main translators of the book posted on the SF Comics Forum. He said they really didn’t change anything for the translation.
And that’s it, I’m done reading. I’ll do a side by side comparison later, have to get some sleep. The Book Rules I tell you!
Oh yeah, that reminds me. Mika’s bio states that a World Warrior tournament is going on in SFA3… uh oh.
Also, in case someone misinterprets it, Funamizu talks about how Street Fighter Alpha 2 was made to cover a hole in the timeline (only three months or so). He’s talking about game release schedules, not the in-game storyline.
It mentions that Mel is 3 years old… doesn’t that contradict our calculations? Or is there any other reason to assume that SF3 takes place in 1997-8, besides that we thought that Mel was 5?
3S we assumed to take place in 1997-98. I do remember mentioning from AAC a while ago, that Mel is 3 in 2I and 4 in 3S. Guess it got overlooked or something. Gomen if I ever mentioned he was 5.
For Gouki and Oro, the line between them in Jap. Eternal says “known hearsay of fellow masters,” basically they both learned about each other through word of mouth, so that can be interpreted as reputations of fighting expertise.
Cool, it’s more or less the same as the US version. I’m inclined to believe the two never fought myself.
Well, if he’s that age, it makes sense still. After all, Ken MOST LIKELY waited until after marrying Eliza before knocking her up… being a honest god-fearing American and all
As opposed to what the comic’s showed.
Udoneko has asked us to tell him about the errors and help out by way of E-Mail on this link rather than discuss it on a Thread, so out of respect to him, when I do a side by side comparison, I’ll leave the errors out. Let’s all give him a hand!
