I have to take Agent Guile’s side on this one. I thought most of the SF3 cast was uninteresting and boring. Gameplay-wise, I thought most of them were great, but as characters, their motivations were weak. Dudley entered the SF3 tournament to defeat Gill in order to get his daddy’s car back? C’mon, now…Ibuki plays well and her moves are sweet, but for some reason, I just can’t stand her as a character. If I had to pick a character who has the worst background/history & motivation, I’d say it’s Remy. His father abandoned his family to go out and seek his calling as a true warrior, thus feuling Remy’s hatred for street fighters. What does Remy do 'bout this? He goes out into world the in order to find and defeat the street fighters and so-called “warriors,” he despises so much, becoming exactly what he hates, pretty much. In the end, he’s just another wandering warrior.
SF3 has too many unserious (carefree, to be more specific) kids for my taste. With SFA, it was okay because it was just Sakura and Karin out of like, 30 characters. With SF3, there’s Elena, Sean, Makoto, and Ibuki out of a significantly smaller cast of characters.
Note that I didn’t include Yun, Yang, and the Dolls because they’re under situations where even though they’re young, they’ve been forced to mature prematurely. Carefree wouldn’t describe them well at all. All of them are tied to the underworld, after all. I suppose one could argue for Makoto a bit since her father is dead, but it sure doesn’t seem like it, I think. Incidentally, Yun and Yang are probably my favorite out of the SF3 cast for that reason.
For crying out loud, SF3 had TWO school girl storylines (Ibuki and Elena). It just was hard to take some of the plots seriously. I mean, really, Elena entered the tournament to find new friends and Ibuki entered the tournament for reasons that she herself doesn’t CARE ABOUT.
It’s hard to feel for a character when they’ve entered a tournament for a motivation that doesn’t even belong to them. Then when Ibuki failed to really get that goal, she didn’t care because she didn’t care about it in the first place. Hard to bring myself to care about something like that Oo
Ibuki: I’m supposed to get this G-File project, but I really don’t care.
Gill: Here you go! But you’ve failed anyway.
Ibuki: Ah well. I don’t care.
Me to self: I don’t care, either. Boy, was THAT pointless.
Throw in the fact that Ibuki’s battles from what I know had nothing to do with her ultimate resolution just adds to the pointlessness (Getting into a university. In essence, Ibuki would have wrapped up her life and storyline just fine without being in the SF3 series in the first place. Heck, Elena’s fighting didn’t really serve much purpose for herself either, IMHO).
Entering to get a car is just… silly. But admittingly, it’s semi-forgiveable due to the fact that Dudley sort of got a joke ending. But… the joke ending wasn’t joking about how silly his motivation for entering the tournament was, so it’s not THAT forgiveable. Strange…
Still trying to figure out Remy. Maybe I need to read over the exact dialogue for his ending or something, but it seems weird that he just randomly realized his hatred for warriors and gave it up. I guess this could be attributed to Third Strike’s lack of post-battle dialogues or something, since maybe Alex made him realize somehow when Remy fought him, but if so, the game certainly doesn’t show it as far as I know (course, I’ve don’t remember the exact dialogue for Remy’s ending, but I don’t think he mentions Alex in it).
And I still think that having an entire doomsday prophecy as nothing but a BACKGROUND EXCUSE (because it never gets resolved) is smoking some strong crack…
And you gotta love Akuma’s storyline in the SF3 series…
Second Impact: Akuma trains! He learns a new technique!
Third Strike: Akuma trains some more! He learns another new technique!
The End
Me: …mweh?
Ah well. Maybe there are some things I’m still missing from the SF3 storyline. I wish there was a complete Third Strike dialogue FAQ… not that it would help much due to Capcom USA’s terrible translations.
Getting to the other subject, I don’t think Guile was brought back into SFA3 to appease the fans. You have to remember that he only made it to the HOME versions. He wasn’t even in SFA3 at first. I don’t think Capcom added the extra characters to the home versions out of pressure from the fans, really, and just did it to garner more sales in general. I could be wrong, though. It is admittingly very strange that Charlie’s official death doesn’t come until the home versions of SFA3.
Wasn’t Zangief sent by the President (Gorbachef) to investigate Shadaloo?
I don’t care very much for the SF3 cast either, and wouldn’t cry if everyone was thrown out for the next game. I’d much rather see a SF0 instead, but I think we’ve discussed that over and over before…
The majority of the SF3 cast is likable from a player’s point of view, but that’s where the fun ends basically. I could care less if they didn’t bring Ibuki back in SF4. If I felt like using her, I’d go back to Third Strike.
Now for the other issue I brought up:
Anyone want to comment on this?
to tiamat: i assume you’re refering to that FAQ on gamefaqs… i wonder when he’s going to update it. hmmm maybe i should do a complete quote faq… anyway, i can beat the game with any character you’d like if you want to know something.
good point about the SF3 characters: they don’t interact with each other much. its nopt surprising that they’re not very popular
hugo
no interaction with anyone. but is ending is really funny
ibuki
after the g-file thing ends, there’s nothing else going on in her life
ryu
meets oro, fights alex
ken
wins the karate championship–sean’s story could have gone on without him in the game
sean
poor kid. he can’t even make it past the qualifying rounds!! and that that dragon punch… give him some respect, capcom
alex
way to build up a new hero. he gets his ass kicked in his own ending. if i was an alex fan (which i’m not) i’d be angry
makoto
no interaction with anyone
12
rivalry with necro
q
do i need to explain this? why should anyone care about him / her / it / balrog?
necro
brings out the evil side of gill, fights with 12
remy
kind of a complex character, but no major interations
gill
his major beef is with alex, that’s about it
urien
this guy is more of a clone of gill that ken is of ryu
chun-li
saves the children
yun
saves the town
yang
has female problems
akuma
he’s still badass, but not involved in anyone’s affairs
elena
do we have any proof that she actually MADE any friends by fighting in the tournament?
oro
this question always intrigues me: what would he have done if ryu WASN’T in the game?
dudley
i think everyone can agree that the car ordeal is lame. bad business deals, loses car, fights gill, gets it back, steering wheel breaks off.
Maybe Capcom was ust trying to make a statement that FF exists in the same universe as SF. Nothing more than that.
Yea, I’d be surprised if that Chun-Li appearance in FF2 was anything more than a cameo. Capcom… seemed to be goofing off a lot with FF2. Well, okay, maybe I’m biased but IMHO they were smoking some strong retarded monkey crack when they made a lot of that game. The enemies just look so WHACK. The final boss in terms of looks is more zany otaku than Sodom for crying out loud
Anyway, admittingly, Street Fighter 2 didn’t have very many interactions either, but the storylines did seem more serious and what interactions there were were a lot more personal. I mean, Necro with Gill was just mediocre but Cammy and M. Bison or Guile with M. Bison or even T. Hawk with M. Bison… for crying out loud, Alex, the main character, had such a shallow interaction with Gill that he doesn’t even have any post battle dialogue with Gill in Second Impact, and Necro’s (and Ibuki’s, too, when I think about it) extent of post battle dialogue is just Gill laughing at their futileness and that’s it. …Dudley had more post battle interaction with Gill than that and considering the goof-offness nonseriousness of his storyline and ending, that’s just sad.
And SF3 had mid-boss dialogues. You’re obligated to have character interaction if there are mid-boss dialogues Course, maybe I’m just spoiled by SFA3 and all the interweaving and interacting that went on there or something.
I have to agree that Chun is more popular than Guile…mainly for three reasons:
-
Chun was the first video game chick to become famous.
-
Guile’s non participation in SFA1, SFA2 and SF3 series.
-
Chun is ahead of Guile in the “billing” aspect of SF2 the animated movie (or any other media incarnations of SF).
But…Chun is more liked by fans as a “media baby” rather than an actual in-game character.
Guile has been played regularly in whatever game that he’s in (meaning, he has a solid fan base in the gaming aspect) whether it’s in a crappy performance (SFA3, MVSC2) or in a total domination (SF2WW, CVS1).
I mean, how many games would you see Chun being used on a regular basis? I could only think of SF33S.
I bet even Zangief is being played more than her.
And about Ryu, his goal is boring indeed, but not necessarily his storyline, especially when Akuma came around.
Actually, Chun-Li’s also one of the most widely used among the non-top-tier characters in CvS2, especially in A-Groove.
Zangief hardly gets attention at all, or perhaps even grapplers altogether.
Guile is crappy is MvC2? He has to be one of the most beefed up Street Fighter in that game.
Uhmmmmm…Guile doesn’t have a trap.
The Sonic Boom works wonders in the CVS engine, but not in the vs series.
I still use him though in MVSC2 cuz he’s fun to use in that game.
Guile is probably the strongest Capcom character in MvC2. He just doesn’t have a trap, but only the top tiers have them… which is why they’re top tier ^_^.
Besides, it’s more fun to play with him than throwing swords all day long with Spiral.
My favorite version of SF3 is definitly Third Strike. Except for Elena, I really didn’t care much for the original cast. I loved the four new editions a lot more - Remy, Makoto, Q and Twelve. Not to mention the return of Chun-Li! Storyline wise Ryu is my favorite, but gamewise Chun-Li is my favorite and the SF3 and CVS2 versions are the most powerful. The story wasn’t resolved, but I didn’t care much for the story anyway. I do respect Capcom for trying something different, though. It would have been so easy for them to just return the whole cast of SF2 with better graphics and call it Three but they didn’t. I wish the cast and story were better, though. My favorite part about Third Strike is when Ryu kicks Alex’s ass! It’s almost like he’s saying, “Street Fighter is my game, punk! Get out of here with your whack ass storyline! I’m the star, I’m Daffy Duck!”
Quick question.
Did Capcom ever give the details of Charlie’s death. Or did they just say he died fighting Bison? I think also that he was trying to save Guile’s life right?
Does Eagle know Zangief or Haggar? Because he does a spinning lariat with his sticks…
I don’t know about Haggar, but there is a good chance that Eagle knows Zangief because they both have a special intro in CvS2. The only possible connection they’d have that comes to mind is the fact that they’re gay, and um… their intro does show SOME kind of bondage between them.
All right all right, maybe the SF3 storylines aren’t that great…
But give them some credit for trying to introduce a new cast. Ryu smacking Alex around was kind of cool. They should have had that Nas song, “Still the Man” playing in the background.
Random stuff today.
On Eagle knowing Gief - I’d say it’s highly unlikely. Their CvS2 intro is most likely just making fun of the fact that they both have spinning moves.
On Chun-Li’s popularity - Yeah, Chun-Li has traditionally always been one of the most popular SF characters, whether she’s top tier or not. She’s used most frequently when she’s top near the top (A2, XSF, A3, MvC, CvS2), and it’s only in the games where she’s absolute garbage (MvC2) or has really bad match-ups (Vs. shotos in old SF2 games) that you don’t see her as much.
BTW, you don’t see anyone using Zangief in Cvs2 because he sucks absolute ass.
On Charlie’s death: I thought Guile’s SFA3 ending showed quiote clearly how he died. Guile was about to eat a Psycho Crusher, Chuckles jumped on his back and made him crash into the Psycho Drive, killing them both (well, at least one of them).
On Guile being in A3: The arcade version of A3 was severely unfinished - Balrog (boxer) was missing half his normals, and he, Juli and Juni used Bison’s portrait, win quotes and endings. So I think hat Guile was indeed supposed to be in the arcade, but they couldn’t finish it in time, so they saved him for the home versions.
On Guile in MvC2: Guile doesn’t have a trap, but he’s good at breaking them (air super is a good air-dash and trap breaker, and his FK assist is great against Sentinel). He’s a good character in general, but I wouldn’t put him above Cammy or Strider (jeez, Siegfried, how could you forget that Strider is a Capcom character? :)).
On Guile/old Sf2 cast returning: technically, any SF2 character could return if Capcom wanted, with or without a storyline. Actually, if there’s an Sf4, I would like to see that: Have the new guys plus maybe a few old ones return with a new storyline, but keep around a few ones that are just there for gameplay’s sake and have no endings, like the secret characters in MSF/MvC.
Speaking of Guile and SF4, i think Amy (who should be in her early 20s by the time SF4 comes out, assuming it keeps a real time schedule and comes out after 2002) could be a decent character as a Neo-Guile. No, I don’t know why Guile would train her, but hey, I’ve seen lamer things.
However, I do not want to see Mel as a full-fledged fighter, since he would either a) be a really annoying kid a la Bao or b) it would mean that the game is so far in the future that even fewer of the old cast would return with a storyline, and I don’t want that.
While we’re talking about kids, I can see Dhalsim’s son as a good Sim replacement. If he was born in 1990 or so, he would be at least 13 by the time the game came out, and he could be a good mini-SIm.
On the SF3 cast: I too find them shallow and their storylines dumb. I’d like to see some of them return, but with better stories. or hell, some of them should actually get stories now, since they really didn’t have any before (like Ibuki and Elena).
IN general, I would like Sf4 to be one big SF smorgasborg (sp?), with a mix and match of Sf1, Sf2, Sf3, Alpha + new characters. Or failing that, make an SF Free for All and just throw in as many charactera as possible (hmmm… maybe that would be better served after the new guys in Sf4 get accepted).
Lol, Chuckles.
Nah, Charlie died fighting Bison when the explosives he planted in the Psycho Drive room went off. It’d be kinda silly if he and Bison just crashed into the bloody thing. It wasn’t like how Zangief repeatedly piledrives Honda to destroy it in that ridiculous joke ending of his.
My concept story for SF4:
- Rose will be resurrected, Having a residue of Bison’s soul with her.
- First appearance of the two persons that Bison trained with.
They will from the big three.
-
The big three will destroy Gill and the illuminati (ending the unimaginative SF3 storyline once and for all)
-
Akuma will make an appearance too.
Imagine that…4 major bosses.
That would be cool since every character can face any of the 4 in their final bout, and not just a single boss (MBison in SFA3).
